KZN youngsters overcome challenges to compete at the prestigious Gothia Cup in Sweden
Mariannridge friends Delon Taylor and Ansley Cloete managed to avoid socio-economic problems in their community to grasp the opportunity of a lifetime to participate in the Gothia Cup soccer tournament taking place in Sweden, from Sunday. Image: Sibonelo Ngcobo Eight KwaZulu-Natal youngsters will depart Johannesburg's International Airport for Sweden, on Friday, for the Gothia Cup soccer tournament taking place from Sunday. Zarina Agherdien, coordinator of the Bluff-based team, the KZN Lyons, explained that selections for this opportunity took place at the Unity Cup in Johannesburg, which was hosted by her partners in football and development, the German International Soccer Academy-South Africa (GIS). Despite challenges, the boys managed to raise the required funding to pay for their tickets. The boys include: Raul Abrahams (Pietermaritzburg); Shaye Moody (Wentworth); Delon Taylor (Marianridge); Luwellyn Loots (Newlands); Braylen Roaskruge (Wentworth); Ezra Hutchinson (Wentworth) and Mikhaeel Montgomery (Sydenham), and Ansley Cloete (Mariannridge). Mariannridge friends Taylor,16, and Cloete,17, managed to avoid socio-economic problems in their community to grasp the opportunity of a lifetime. Both boys are in Grade 9. They worked tirelessly to earn this opportunity and honed their skills by competing notably in the eThekwini u.16 development league in 2024. Ansley's mother, Genevieve Anyigulile, spoke of her struggles in raising four children in an abandoned sports ground's changing room for the past 12 years. Anyigulile said it was an emotional send-off. 'Although we could not go to the bus station, my neighbours and I gave him a send-off. He has never been away from home, and he will now learn to be self-sufficient. He has good company and people around him. I know he will be a success,' Anyigulile said. Tracy Taylor encouraged her son Delon to stay focused and follow his dreams and regarded Taylor as an unsung hero in the community who would one day inspire others. Agherdien together with football director Zaid Poultney made it their duty to know each of their players' worth, mannerisms, and needs. 'We see them as our own. What we are trying to do is difficult because most of them do not come from privileged backgrounds,' she said. Poultney played football, and Agherdien played hockey, both following in their parents' footsteps. She strongly believes that sports can change lives.

If Pirates tackled the strife head-on, Monnapule Saleng would have been in Orbit long ago
NEW TWIST Finally, the Monnapule Saleng saga is over. Orlando Pirates star is loaned out to Orbit College FC. Picture: Sydney Mahlangu/BackpagePix Thank goodness Monnapule Saleng will finally return to action after Orlando Pirates cold-shouldered him for months. The Saleng saga resonates with the tumultuous world of professional football, where a contract dispute can lead to a dramatic fall from grace. Once celebrated by fans for his electrifying performances, Saleng's standing at Pirates has spiralled downward since late 2024, when he played against Al Ahly. Since then, a combination of being sidelined and the club's apparent indifference has left him stuck in limbo, deprived of competitive play and clarity regarding his future. The situation reached a tipping point earlier this year when Saleng's frustrations boiled over, leading to a public rift with the club's management. His exclusion from pre-season preparations, particularly the Spain-bound camp, signalled that his time with the Sea Robbers was nearing its end. Rumblings around a wage dispute hinted at more than just simple contractual misunderstanding; it painted a picture of a larger struggle for respect and recognition that many players endure behind the scenes. The discord could have been mitigated had the management chosen to engage in dialogue from the outset. Instead, the Pirates' reluctance to address the issue has resulted in a significant fallout, and one would have expected a higher standard of accountability from the club. Analysts were taken aback by the club's apparent hesitance to confront the conflict head-on. In the sporting world, where unity and teamwork are paramount, Pirates' eschewing of proactive measures is viewed as a missed opportunity to demonstrate leadership. Fans feel that, as one of the biggest teams in South Africa, Pirates should have been the larger entity, going above and beyond to resolve the issue instead of allowing it to fester. The club's apparent indifference has left him stuck in limbo, deprived of competitive play and clarity regarding his future. Pirates have agreed to loan Saleng to Premiership newcomers Orbit College FC for the 2025/26 season. This provides a glimmer of hope as the club is finally allowing the 27-year-old to return to local football, He launched his professional career at Orbit College and then had a stint with Free State Stars, before making the move to one of the country's most prestigious clubs Pirates. While Saleng's time at Pirates has been mired in frustration, this loan might provide a crucial opportunity for rejuvenation. It's an exit that bears the promise of revival, whereby he can rebuild his form and confidence before potentially rejoining Pirates' setup in the future. Fans will undoubtedly be watching closely to see if their former favourite can recapture the spark that made him a household name in South African football.

Thabo Moloisane set to leave Stellies with Big 3 circling
Thabo Moloisane will walk away from Stellenbosch FC at the end of the 2025/26 season, with his agent confirming he won't renew his contract. That means the highly-rated defender will be available as a free agent from 1 July 2026. After joining Stellenbosch following Maritzburg United's relegation in 2023, the 27-year-old centre-back has flourished. Moloisane made 46 appearances across all competitions last season, playing a pivotal role in helping the club secure a third-place finish in the Betway Premiership and a semi-final berth in the CAF Confederation Cup. Alongside Ismaël Olivier Touré, Moloisane anchored the heart of the defence, earning widespread plaudits for his commanding performances. 'Yes, this is our last dance so to speak. Thabo has had an incredible stint at Stellenbosch FC and enjoyed quite a number of milestones with the club, including being called up to Bafana Bafana,' said agent Karabo Tshabuse. 'There were discussions for a contract extension, which was tabled for him to continue playing there beyond just next season. But we could not find each other – so this will be Thabo's final year at the club.' With just six months before Moloisane becomes eligible to sign a pre-contract, interest is heating up from South Africa's traditional powerhouses, Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns. Kaizer Chiefs: quiet monitoring The Glamour Boys have tracked Moloisane since late 2024. Chiefs reportedly included him on their defensive wishlist and may move in with a formal offer closer to the season's conclusion. Orlando Pirates: Leading the race Pirates have shown the most aggressive interest, identifying Moloisane as a key defensive target early in 2025. Reports suggest ongoing talks, with a potential deal on the table. Scouts have consistently watched his progress, and the Bucs appear keen to seal the move. Mamelodi Sundowns: Keeping tabs Sundowns haven't made any official moves yet, but their historic connection to Moloisane, who came through their youth ranks, makes them a legitimate contender. The Brazilians have also kept a close eye on Stellenbosch's emerging talent pool. The player has admitted he's aware of the buzz surrounding his future. In a composed response, Moloisane expressed gratitude but refused to rush any decisions. 'I'm waiting for the right opportunity at the right time. God is in control, so we'll see,' he said.
