MIT researchers invent game-changing product that could revolutionize agriculture: 'You could give back a billion dollars to US growers'

A team of MIT researchers has developed a system that helps agricultural sprays stick to plant leaves, cutting down on polluting runoff and lowering costs for farmers.
Agricultural spraying involves mixing water with chemicals and applying droplets to plant leaves, which are inherently water-repellent, according to a report by MIT News.
After testing a variety of methods to optimize the delivery of pesticides and other sprays, the team ended up coating water droplets with a small amount of oil to help them adhere to the leaves.
"Basically, this oil film acts as a way to trap that droplet on the surface, because oil is very attracted to the surface and sort of holds the water in place," said Simon Rufer, an MIT graduate student and co-author of a study on the topic.
During initial tests, the researchers used soybean oil, figuring that this material would be familiar to farmers, many of whom grow soybeans, the report explained.
However, soybean oil wasn't part of the usual supply chains, so they found that several of the chemicals they were already using could be employed in the same way.
"That way, we're not introducing a new chemical or changed chemistries into their field, but they're using things they've known for a long time," said Kripa Varanasi, an MIT professor involved in the project.
Pesticide use has been steadily increasing across the globe, rising 20% over the last decade, and even up to 153% in low-income countries.
The use of this and other types of sprays across the nearly 1.2 billion acres of agricultural land in the U.S. adds up both in terms of quantity and costs. Approximately half a million tons of pesticides, 12 million tons of nitrogen, and four million tons of phosphorus fertilizer are applied to crops across the country.
By using the new system, which is being commercialized by AgZen, a spinoff company created by the researchers, farmers can reduce the amount of spray they need to use on crops.

"You could give back a billion dollars to U.S. growers if you just saved 6 percent of their pesticide budget," said Vishnu Jayaprakash, lead author of the research paper and CEO of AgZen. "In the lab we got 300 percent of extra product on the plant. So that means we could get orders of magnitude reductions in the amount of pesticides that farmers are spraying."
This adhesive effect also helps reduce agricultural runoff, a leading cause of water quality degradation in rivers and streams. It also helps reduce soil erosion, nutrient loss, and the spread of pesticides into our waterways.
The system, which AgZen calls RealCoverage, has already been deployed across 920,000 acres of farmland and various crop types, saving farmers up to 50% on their pesticide expenditures, the report explained.
The RealCoverage system requires a nozzle that fits most spraying equipment and provides real-time coverage data using its onboard AI, so that it can be fine-tuned, even while in use.
"The knowledge we are gathering from every leaf, combined with our expertise in interfacial science and fluid mechanics, is giving us unparalleled insights into how chemicals are used and developed — and it's clear that we can deliver value across the entire agrochemical supply chain," Varanasi said, per MIT News.
"Our mission is to use these technologies to deliver improved outcomes and reduced costs for the ag industry."

Across the U.S. and parts of Europe, science funding is in crisis. In the U.S., a planned $18 billion worth of cuts to federal research have already halted trials, triggered mass layoffs, and shut down entire programs. Europe isn't immune either, with Horizon, Europe's flagship funding program for research and innovation, also facing rollbacks. These cuts are stretching researchers thin and slowing down innovation when we need it most. Breakthroughs in cancer, rare diseases, and drug development require time, space, and the freedom to explore. Instead, scientists are burning out and many are even walking away, with a recent Nature survey showing that 75% of U.S.-based researchers are considering relocation. With China ramping up investment in AI, the U.S. and Europe risk falling behind just as science enters its most exciting era. Agentic AI could ease the burden Scientific research is slow and expensive, not because of a lack of ideas, but because the tools haven't kept up. Knowledge is buried in siloed papers, scattered datasets, and disconnected systems, and pulling it all together takes time, money, and a lot of manual effort, slowing down even the most promising discoveries. This is where AI comes in as a true lab partner. Unlike the AI systems most of us are familiar with, agentic AI can plan and carry out tasks, all from a single prompt. Scientists can access a suite of agents that will handle the repetitive work that eats up their time, like writing reports, reviewing literature, or designing and running early-stage experiments in the lab. Tech companies and academic researchers are already starting to develop agentic AI to help achieve this. Owkin's K Navigator, Google's AI co-scientist, and Stanford's Biomni reflect a growing shift towards the adoption of agentic co-pilots that let scientists engage with their data as naturally as they would with a colleague. K Navigator is already showing that it can boost productivity by up to 20 times, giving researchers the freedom to focus on making breakthroughs. K Navigator exclusively accesses and analyses spatial multiomic data from MOSAIC Window, a subset of the largest spatial omics dataset in oncology. This allows researchers to better understand how different cells work together in the tumor micro-environment and advance vital cancer research. Agentic AI can help researchers shape hypotheses, work with complex data, and uncover insights, without needing a data science team to guide every step. This kind of acceleration will not only help researchers meet deadlines, but also open up scientific questions that might otherwise go unexplored. We hear this need from researchers every day. Many feel compelled to maintain the same high standards and deliver more data, more trials, and more publications, with fewer resources. In cancer centers and university labs alike, time is the scarcest resource. Agentic AI, embedded into real workflows, can effectively remove some of the friction that slows science down. More time on what matters AI agents won't replace critical thinking or peer review. But with the right safeguards and design (e.g. accurate source referencing and intuitive data visualization), they can help scientists spend less time on admin and more time on what really matters to advance treatments and diagnostics for patients. Because if we can't increase budgets, we need to increase impact. That means giving scientists the tools to do more with less, without burning them out or holding them back. Now is the moment to get this right, otherwise, the cost of underfunding science won't just be slower progress. It'll be lost cures, missed breakthroughs, and a generation of researchers who walk away.

Denis Villeneuve Will Shoot All of ‘Dune Messiah' in IMAX

Dune: Part Two was masterful on its own, but in IMAX, it was truly breathtaking. When director Denis Villeneuve opened his aspect ratio up to the full screen 1:43:1 for scenes such as Paul riding the sandworm, it was like traveling from the theater to Arrakis itself. So, it's no surprise that, hot on the heels of Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey becoming the first ever Hollywood feature to be filmed entirely with full-screen IMAX 70mm-capable film cameras, we now know the second film to achieve that historic feat will be Denis Villeneuve's Dune Messiah. Speaking on CNBC, IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond broke the news in a larger segment about IMAX movies playing, and coming, to theaters. Here's the clip. A spokesperson for IMAX confirmed Gelfond's quotes that Villeneuve is, in fact, shooting all of Messiah with IMAX cameras. We also reached out to Warner Bros. but had yet to hear back as of publication. We'll update this story if and when we do. Of course, there have been many, many rumblings about Dune Messiah over the past several months, with the latest being that Villeneuve will start filming very soon. If this IMAX news is true, though, he will have to wait for Christopher Nolan to finish filming The Odyssey, as there are only a handful of cameras in the world capable of capturing movies in this way, and Nolan currently has all of them. However, this past weekend, several actors expected to appear in the third Dune film, such as Anya Taylor-Joy and Rebecca Ferguson, were spotted together at an F1 race in the United Kingdom. It's unconfirmed, but many assumed that's because they're all there getting ready for Dune. And yet, Warner Bros. has yet to officially announce that Villeneuve is even making the film. No official release date, no statement, nothing. Everyone seems to assume it's happening, especially after the recent casting of the Atreides kids. This IMAX news, though, adds to the overwhelming mountain of evidence that Dune Messiah is coming, it's coming soon, and it's going to be big. Want more io9 news?
