GMA Network18-06-2025
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) successfully conducted three-day Floating Aggregate Device (FAD) Laying Operations in Hasa Hasa and Kanduli Shoals.
That's despite radio challenges and dangerous maneuvers from four Chinese Coast Guard vessels during the operation.
'Our crew, especially the radio operators, responded with professionalism and composure, successfully maintaining our maritime presence with dignity and courage,' said the PCG in a statement released on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the PCG said that there are now 20 FADs deployed in the area.
'The primary objective of this initiative is to bolster the livelihoods of Filipino fishermen by improving their fish catch, while also contributing to the national government's Kadiwa para sa Bagong Bayaning Mangingisda (KBBM) program, which aims to ensure a sustainable and affordable supply of fish,' the statement read.
The PCG also said that the devices were installed with the use of three 44-meter Multi-Role Response Vessels (MRRVs), the 5001 PCG-manned BFAR vessel, and MV Mamalakaya, along with several Filipino fishing boats.
'The Philippine Coast Guard and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources remain steadfast in their mission to safeguard the livelihoods of our people, promote food security, and uphold our sovereign rights in the West Philippine Sea,' it added. —Jiselle Anne Casucian/ VAL, GMA Integrated News

PCG aircraft monitors Chinese research ship off Cagayan

The Xiang Yang Hong 05 research vessel was monitored and challenged by a Philippine Coast Guard aircraft off Cagayan on Saturday, August 2, 2025. PHOTO: PHILIPPINE COAST GUARD The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said Sunday it sent an aircraft to monitor and challenge a Chinese research vessel that was spotted near Cagayan. In a statement, Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan, PCG Commandant ordered the deployment of a PCG aircraft to conduct a Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) patrol on Saturdayin response to the presence of the Xiang Yang Hong 05, which was tracked approximately 37 nautical miles off the coast of Sta. Ana, Cagayan. 'The PCG aircraft successfully conducted its MDA flight yesterday afternoon and physically sighted the Xiang Yang Hong 05 at a distance of 14.92 nautical miles from Babuyan Island,' the Coast Guard said. The PCG aircraft issued a challenge to the Chinese ship which did not respond. 'The Xiang Yang Hong 05 left Guangdong, China, on June 5, 2025, en route to the West Philippine Sea. It entered the Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone on June 7, approximately 130 nautical miles from Burgos, Ilocos Norte, and subsequently left on June 9, only to re-enter the EEZ last July 31,' the Coast Guard said. According to the PCG, the Chinese ship 'conducted substantial marine scientific research for almost 22 days after departing the Philippine EEZ and before re-entering. This research occurred along a parallel track in the Pacific Ocean, close to Guam at a distance of 42 nautical miles. As of this morning, the vessel was monitored via Automatic Identification System (AIS) approximately 86 nautical miles from Calayan Island, Cagayan.' The PCG said the Xiang Yang Hong 05 is a research vessel that was converted from a cargo ship and deployed to sensitive maritime zones to support People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) operations. The Coast Guard said it 'remains committed to monitoring and protecting the nation's maritime jurisdiction, ensuring the safety and security of its waters against foreign vessels engaged in unauthorized and illegal maritime activities.' — RF, GMA Integrated News

Cardinal Tagle leads Mass for PH youth at Jubilee of the Youth 2025 in Rome

In his homily, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle emphasized the importance of making the right choices in Christian life. "Every decision we make can either bring us closer to God — or lead us further away from Him," he reminded the youth. PIA GONZALEZ-ABUCAY Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle presided this week over the celebration of the Holy Mass at Santa Pudenziana Church, known as the Filipino Chaplaincy in Rome, where some 300 young Filipino pilgrims gathered as part of the spiritual activities of the Jubilee of the Youth 2025. Joining him in the concelebrated Mass on July 29 were nearly 30 priests from various congregations, including Archbishop Rex Alarcon, chairman of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) Episcopal Commission on Youth; Fr. Ted Kalaw, superior general of the Order of Clerics Regular Minor (Adorno Fathers); Fr. Ronan Ayag, chaplain of the Sentro Pilipino; and several other Filipino religious priests from different parts of the world. Youth delegates came from various countries across Europe, such as Spain and Germany, as well as from the United Kingdom, Canada, Dubai, and Bahrain. Also in attendance were 50 delegates from the Philippines under the CBCP Episcopal Commission on Youth (ECY), who actively participated and joyfully took part in the gathering. "Every decision we make can either bring us closer to God — or lead us further away from Him," he reminded the youth. Before the Mass, participants took part in the whole-day Live Pure Conference, an annual gathering of Filipino youth from Italy and Europe, organized by the Sentro Pilipino Youth Ministry (SPYM) under the guidance of the Filipino Chaplaincy in Rome. This year, the conference was aligned with the Jubilee of the Youth and featured workshops and activities that addressed the spiritual and personal growth of young people. Photo by: Pia Gonzalez-Abucay After the Mass, the youth continued with moments of joyful fellowship—catching up, dancing, singing, taking photos and bonding with priests, religious sisters, Philippine Ambassador to the Holy See Myla Grace Macahilig, and Cardinal Tagle himself. "I feel nothing but joy—a happiness that reaches down to my bones. I am deeply grateful to God that we were able to open our Filipino Chaplaincy to everyone for this historic event. Truly, we are carried by His grace," said Berkz Cepillo, who has led the Sentro Pilipino Youth Ministry (SPYM) and the Live Pure Conference for the past 10 years, in an interview with GMA Integrated News. Photo by: Pia Gonzalez-Abucay Meanwhile, Ambassador Myla Macahilig praised the commitment of young Filipinos who traveled from distant countries to be part of this milestone celebration. "Go forth! As Pope Leo XIV said, you are the light of the world and the salt of the Earth," she declared. The Jubilee of the Youth 2025 is a week-long celebration in Rome with over one million young people from 146 countries in attendance. It began on Tuesday, July 29, and will culminate on Sunday, August 3, with a Holy Mass led by Pope Leo XIV at Tor Vergata in Rome. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

PSA warns vs. fake CENOMAR online

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) warned the public of the so-called temporary certificate of no marriage (CENOMAR) that is being offered online. According to Emil Sumangil's report in '24 Oras' on Wednesday, the PSA clarified that there is no such thing as a temporary CENOMAR. 'Once and for all, hindi nawawala yung marriage. So halimbawa, gusto mo magpakasal at mayroon ka ng previous marriage, siguro ang maganda nilang tignan ay annulment of marriage,' said Emilio Querubin Jr., chief of PSA Civil Register Management Division. (Once and for all, marriage will never cease. So for example, if you want to get married again, you can consider getting an annulment of marriage.) Overseas Filipino worker 'Cynthia' has been separated from her husband since 2012. As someone working abroad, the temporary CENOMARs being offered online caught her attention. 'Nakikita ko po kasi sa groups na ang daming nag-o-offer doon tapos marami rin ang nagpapagawa,' she said. (I saw in the groups that many are offering and availing them.) '...Ang akin lang, sana yung mapalaya ko yung sarili ko sa marriage na ilang taon nang hiwalay kami. Iniisip ko na magagamit ko 'yun someday,' 'Cynthia' added. (For me, I just want to free myself from the marriage I've been into. I thought I could use such a document someday.) One online post was offering such a service, claiming that the temporary CENOMARs can be availed even when you are married, and they claimed to be officially issued by the PSA. However, the PSA explained that CENOMAR serves as proof that a person is single or has no record of marriage in the Philippines. The agency warned that such fake documents can easily be validated by embassies. 'Once na matingnan po 'yun at mag-request yung end user ng kopya, iko-compare doon sa binigay sa kanila, mahuli-huli at mahuli-mahuli sila kasi yung marriage hindi naman nawawala sa database ng PSA,' said Querubin. (Once it's checked and the end user requested for a copy, they will compare it with the one they have. So you can still be caught because marriages will remain in PSA's database.) GMA Integrated News reached out to the social media user who posted about the temporary CENOMAR but did not give a response. Meanwhile, the post was already deleted. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/LDF, GMA Integrated News
