How Ahmedabad's Coldplay tour bounty signals India's prospering concert economy
The Coldplay 'Music of the Spheres' concert, held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on January 25-26, has delivered a staggering economic windfall for the city. According to a comprehensive report by EY-Parthenon and BookMyShow, the event, which drew over 222,000 fans, generated an estimated Rs 641 crore bounty for the local economy. The event catalysed a multi-sector economic surge, with direct contributions of Rs 392 crore to Ahmedabad's economy and Rs 72 crore in Goods and Services Tax (GST). The report details a ripple effect across tourism, hospitality, transportation and retail, positioning the city for more such large-scale concerts.advertisementAhmedabad airport handled 138,000 travellers over three days, including 112 chartered flights. Hotels operated at full capacity, with rates soaring to historic highs, while restaurants and local transport services reported record revenues. The report notes that 86 per cent of attendees travelled from outside Ahmedabad, representing over 500 cities. Social media posts relating to the two concerts in Ahmedabad reached 350 million and the combined media coverage 1.2 billion.'The economic impact estimation is based on actual revenues from ticketing, in-concert food and beverage, merchandise and parking,' said Raghav Anand, partner and leader-digital, media and convergence, EY-Parthenon.
'Additionally, the broader economic contribution, including attendees spending on travel, accommodation, local transport, shopping related to the concert, etc., was estimated through a survey of 2,821 concert attendees conducted by BookMyShow,' he said. The report claims the concert's economic impact extended beyond immediate financial metrics. It created an estimated 15,000 jobs, spanning event management, security, logistics and volunteer roles, demonstrating the labour-intensive nature of such events. Local businesses, from street vendors to high-end retailers, benefited from increased footfall, while the event's operational scale—featuring 130 food and beverage stalls, 54 hydration stations and 68 food trailers—underscored the logistical management.advertisementAnalytically, the event's success reflects broader trends in India's concert economy, which surpassed Rs 12,000 crore in 2024 and is projected to grow at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 19 per cent over the next three years. Rising disposable incomes, rapid digital adoption, and a young, experience-hungry audience are driving demand for world-class entertainment. The report cites the growing interest in international artistes/bands such as Ed Sheeran, Dua Lipa and Green Day as evidence of India's ascent as a destination for live music.American hard-rock band Guns N' Roses will return to India after a 13-year hiatus, for a performance at the Mahalaxmi Race Course in Mumbai on May 17. Speculation abounds about artistes such as Eminem, Taylor Swift, BTS and Adele performing in India this year, but no confirmed dates or venues are available. A post on microblogging site X speculated about Adele performing at a major event in Mumbai (July 12-14), but this lacks corroboration from reliable sources. While the future looks promising, the EY-Parthenon and BookMyShow report highlights challenges that must be addressed to maintain this momentum. Complex regulatory frameworks and permission delays pose barriers for event organisers. The recommendation for a single-window-clearance portal and public-private partnerships to streamline approvals and finance infrastructure upgrades is critical.advertisementStrategic investments in large-capacity venues and accessibility enhancements, such as improved transport and facilities for persons with disabilities, are equally vital. Ahmedabad's success, facilitated by collaboration with local authorities and infrastructure enhancements such as extended metro services, sets a precedent for other cities.'This was the first live music concert at the Narendra Modi Stadium—a landmark moment for live entertainment in India. Globally, stadia are commonly used as concert venues; yet in India, this practice has been limited. Despite the country boasting of numerous state-of-the-art cricket and football stadia, their potential beyond sporting events has remained underutilised,' says Anil Makhija, COO-live entertainment and venues, BookMyShow. For the Coldplay concert, the challenge of preserving cricket pitches was addressed by deploying specialised pitch and turf protectors, added Makhija.Ahmedabad's breakthrough serves as a compelling case study, inviting other Indian cities to harness the economic potential of the live entertainment boom, the report underscores.Subscribe to India Today Magazine

Meet Bollywood actor who was a hit as a hero but flopped as a director, every film he directed was a disaster, his name is…
The relationship between an actor and a director is very deep. If the actor follows the director's instructions, he can do wonders in the film, but if the director himself loses his direction or becomes weak somewhere, the film can lose its direction. Sometimes it also happens that the actor himself is the director of his own film. This work becomes a little complicated. Today, we will tell you about an actor who became a flop director. How Ajay Devgn's directed films turned out to be flops Many actors have done such experiments, but the success rate has not been very good. The actor in question is none other than Ajay Devgn. Take Singham for example. When he took command of the direction along with acting, his boat sank in the middle of the sea. Imagine that Ajay Devgn, who gave hit films with other directors as an actor, could not give a good film under his own direction. Ajay Devgn directed four films and all four of them could neither impress the fans nor show any magic at the box office. Ajay Devgn's list of flop films as a director U Me Aur Hum (2008) – A romantic drama starring Ajay Devgn and Kajol in the lead roles, based on a couple dealing with memory loss. This was Ajay Devgn's first directorial venture. The budget of this film is said to be 25 crores and the film grossed 27.86 crores in India. It proved to be a flop. Shivaay (2016) – An action drama in which Devgn plays a mountaineer on a mission to save his daughter. The film is known for its use of technology and the use of helicam. It received mixed reviews and grossed over Rs 138.55 crore worldwide. The budget of the film is said to be 100 crore. Runway 34 (2022) – A thriller-drama inspired by true events, in which Devgn deals with trouble in the role of a pilot. The film's cinematography was praised but it failed commercially. The budget of this film is said to be 105 crores while its total earnings were 54.71 crores. Bhola (2023) – Hindi remake of Tamil film Kaithi, an action thriller in which Devgn played the role of a man on a mission who was earlier a criminal. Even the strong technical effects could not give this film strength at the box office. The budget of this film was 100 crores and it earned 111.64 crores.

Not Khans, not Bachchan – Meet the 90s superstar who charged Rs 1.25 crore first: Chiranjeevi's unmatched rise and the legacy that rewrote stardom rules
Chiranjeevi While Shah Rukh Khan , Salman Khan, and Aamir Khan dominated Bollywood in the 90s, there was one name that had already revolutionised Indian cinema — and it didn't come from the Hindi film industry. Before the Khans or even Amitabh Bachchan entered the Rs 1 crore club, it was Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi who shattered the barrier and emerged as India's highest-paid actor of the decade. In 1992, The Week featured Chiranjeevi on its cover with the headline: "Bigger than Bachchan." At the time, he was reported to have commanded an unprecedented Rs 1.25 crore for his film Aapadbandhavudu, establishing a new financial benchmark in Indian cinema. According to the magazine, this placed him well ahead of other cinematic heavyweights like Rajinikanth, Sunny Deol, and Govinda — who were earning around Rs 50–60 lakh per film. The rise of a southern sensation Chiranjeevi's dominance didn't happen overnight. His consistent success in the Telugu film industry throughout the late 1980s and early 90s made him a household name across India. His magnetic screen presence, energetic dance moves, and mass appeal led to a streak of 14 consecutive hits in a single year, earning him the title: 'The New Money Machine' of Indian cinema. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Thị trường có dấu hiệu suy thoái không? IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Though he briefly dabbled in Bollywood with a few Hindi films, it was his towering status in South Indian cinema that secured his immortality. As The Week noted, when Amitabh Bachchan took a break from films in the early 90s, Chiranjeevi stepped in as India's most bankable star — a groundbreaking feat for a non-Bollywood actor at the time. A legacy that changed the game Chiranjeevi's financial milestone redefined how stardom was measured in Indian cinema. His move to command Rs 1 crore per film inspired other legends like Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth to follow suit. Eventually, Bollywood caught up, with Amitabh Bachchan becoming the first Hindi actor to reach that salary tier after his return to films. By the late 90s, the Bollywood trio — Shah Rukh, Salman, and Aamir — began commanding Rs 2–3 crore per movie. But it was Chiranjeevi who laid the foundation for this new era of superstar earnings. Still a giant Having acted in more than 150 films, Chiranjeevi remains a revered icon. His tremendous success has translated into a phenomenal estimated net worth of Rs 1650 crore. As an actor, producer, and philanthropist, his influence continues to shape Indian entertainment and inspire generations of stars to come.
