
How optical illusions are illuminating vital medical research
It's a funhouse for our perceptions, built for the TikTok age. But the visual tricks are windows into how the mind works, and they fascinate scientists.
"The brain uses all the information it can get to figure out what's in front of it," Dr. Martin Doherty, a psychology professor at the University of East Anglia in England, told CBS News.
Doherty has studied one particular puzzle for years called the Ebbinghaus illusion, an optical illusion which shows how size perception can be manipulated using surrounding shapes.
"The illusion works by using context to mess around with your perception," Doherty explains.
Doherty long thought that everyone saw the Ebbinghaus illusion the same way. But in a study published in March in the journal Scientific Reports , he and his colleagues found that radiologists who have years of training to ignore visual distractions actually see the image differently and accurately.
In the study, researchers tested 44 experts in "medical image interpretation" — radiographers and radiologists — against a control group of nonexperts consisting of psychology and medical students.
They found that the experts were "significantly less susceptible to all illusions except for the Shepard Tabletops, demonstrating superior perceptual accuracy."
"According to the theory, that shouldn't happen," Doherty said. "It shouldn't be possible. No previous research has shown that you can learn to see through them."
One other group has also been shown to solve the illusion, young children. But that ability goes away after age 7, Doherty said.
"We think that's because it takes time to learn to integrate context into your perception," Doherty said.
It's evidence of the deep abilities of a trained brain. But for most of us, illusions are proof of our limitations.
"When you see these visuals, it's just like your brain just starts going crazy," museumgoer Kevin Paguay said.
It's also a reminder that you cannot always believe what you see.

New AI outlines lung tumors better and faster than doctors, study finds
Scientists have developed a revolutionary new AI tool which, according to a new study, may become crucial in lung cancer screening and treatment. The study, published in the journal npj Precision Oncology, explored the capabilities of a new device, developed by a team at Northwestern Medicine. The device is called iSeg, which comes from its ability to perform tumor segmentation (online or mapping tumors). The traditional process of tumor segmentation is complex and poses challenges for doctors. It can also take multiple doctors visits, several scans, and a great deal of time. In one study, manual segmentation required 12 scans and took doctors seven hours to complete the manual tumor mapping. Other AI tools have been developed for cancer screenings, however, those tools used static images. iSeg uses 3D imagery for a deeper understanding of the tumor, including how it moves as a patient breathes—an important factor in determining treatment plans. iSeg's clearer mapping also means it exposes areas that doctors may miss while using manual segmentation. In the study, after the AI was trained, iSeg was shown scans it had never seen, and was tasked with outlining tumors. When compared to outlines drawn by physicians, iSeg matched experts' drawings, but it also flagged additional areas that doctors couldn't see. Interestingly, those areas turned out to be critical, as they are often linked to more serious diagnoses and worse outcomes if overlooked. 'We're one step closer to cancer treatments that are even more precise than any of us imagined just a decade ago,' said Dr. Mohamed Abazeed, senior author of the study, and chair and professor of radiation oncology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. 'The goal of this technology is to give our doctors better tools,' added Abazeed. Other experts say AI technology is important when it comes to lung cancer patients, not only because it can save lives, but also because it may help close care gaps that lead to underdiagnosing for certain groups due to socioeconomic factors. Pulmonologist Stephen Kuperberg, MPH '24, and David Christiani, Elkan Blout Professor of Environmental Genetics at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, explained in a June commentary that cancer screening rates are lower among high-risk patients from Black and Latinx neighborhoods. 'The underlying reasons for poor uptake within this population are complex, including structural racism and social and cultural factors,' they wrote, urging the 'vital need' for more AI tools which can help with 'optimal data collection.' Currently, the glaring gap in early detection leads to higher mortality from the disease for those groups. They added, 'AI technologies will transform reporting, collecting, and processing population data, whether in public datasets and repositories or within institutions, paving the way for discovery and methodology development in lung cancer detection.'

How a Parasitic Bird With No Parents Learns What Species It Is
In P.D. Eastman's classic picture book 'Are You My Mother?' a baby bird hatches alone and goes on a quest. It asks a cow, a dog, and even an excavator whether they might be its mother. Finally, the chick and its true mom reunite. In nature, cowbirds also hatch without their parents present. Cowbird mothers leave their eggs behind in the nests of different species. Yet to grow up safely, the birds must join other cowbirds in flocks. They somehow need to learn what species they belong to. Earlier research hinted that brown-headed cowbird chicks might reconnect with their parents. But a paper published Thursday in the journal Animal Behaviour found no evidence of a happy reunion. Instead, cowbird chicks learned who they were by hanging out with unrelated adult females. Brown-headed cowbirds are what scientists call brood parasites. That means parents don't raise their own young. Mothers sneakily lay eggs in other birds' nests, and oblivious host parents rear the young brood parasite alongside their own offspring. (Chicks of the common cuckoo, another brood parasite, kill their foster siblings by shoving them over the side of the nest.) Unlike most birds, a young brood parasite doesn't get attached to its host parents. You can see this if you rear cowbirds by hand, said Mark Hauber, a comparative psychologist at CUNY Graduate Center in New York: 'They start hating you at some point.' If a cowbird imprinted on a family of yellow warblers, say, and sought out warblers' company as an adult, it would never find a mate and reproduce. Beyond mating, 'There's tons of different benefits to knowing what kind of bird you are,' said Mac Chamberlain, an ornithologist at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign who works with Dr. Hauber.
