During our meeting, we discussed the beginning of our long-term partnership and underscored our commitment towards building healthcare capacity and transforming patient care landscape by providing scholarships for local Nigerian doctors in 42 critical and underserved specialties. We also discussed about addressing critical social and health issues in the country including breaking the infertility stigma and supporting girl education.' We are strongly committed to transforming patientcare landscape through our scholarships program. Till today, we have provided more than 2270 scholarships for young doctors from 53 countries in 44 critical and underserved specialties.' Merck Foundation has provided 63 scholarships for Nigerian doctors, out of which 8 scholarships have been provided for Fertility, Embryology, Sexual & Reproductive Medicine, Biotechnology of Human Assisted Reproduction and Embryology and Women's Health.
Moreover, 38 scholarships have been provided for Diabetes, Preventative Cardiovascular Medicine, Cardiology, Endocrinology and Obesity & Weight Management. After completion of the course, these doctors will be able to establish diabetes or hypertension clinics in their Health Centre or Hospital with the aim to help prevent and manage the disease in their own communities.
Additionally, 17 scholarships have been provided for other critical and underserved specialties like Oncology Research, Clinical Psychiatry, Dermatology in Clinical Practice, Pain Management, Respiratory Medicine, Care of the Older Person, Critical Care, Rheumatology, and more.
Moreover, As a part of their 'Educating Linda' program, Merck Foundation has also sponsored the education of 20 high performing but underprivileged Nigerian schoolgirls.
Merck Foundation has also conducted three edition of Online Health Media Training for the Nigerian journalists, to emphasize on the important role that media plays to influence society to create a cultural shift with the aim to address wide range of social and health issues such as: Breaking Infertility Stigma, Supporting Girl Education, Women Empowerment, Ending Child Marriage, Ending FGM, and/ or Stopping GBV at all levels; to underscore the importance of Empowering Girls and Women in Education and to understand the social and psychological impact of infertility stigma and other social issues like GBV, Child Marriage, FGM etc. over women and their families and communities.
Moreover, to raise awareness of early detection and prevention of Diabetes and Hypertension.

Former Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari -- who led his country first as a junta strongman and later as an elected democrat -- died Sunday at the age of 82, his aide and the presidency said. Muhammadu governed Nigeria with a strong hand as a military ruler in the 1980s before reinventing himself as a "converted democrat", serving two terms from 2015 to 2023.(AFP) Current President Bola Tinubu said in a statement that his predecessor died in London at about 4:30 pm (1530 GMT) "following a prolonged illness". He did not disclose the nature of the illness. Buhari governed Nigeria with a strong hand as a military ruler in the 1980s before reinventing himself as a "converted democrat", serving two terms from 2015 to 2023. "The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, this afternoon in a clinic in London," Garba Shehu, who served as Buhari's spokesman during his presidency, said in a post on social media. Tinubu said he had spoken with Buhari's widow and ordered Vice President Kashim Shettima to go to England to accompany Buhari's body back to Nigeria. He also ordered flags to fly at half-staff in honour of Buhari, whose tenure was dogged by health rumours. His frequent visits for medical treatment during his presidency attracted criticism about the government's transparency over his illness and worries about leadership during some of his longer absences. Although the nature of his ailment has never been made public, Buhari confessed in one of the trips that he had "never been so ill" and that he had received several blood transfusions. Critics also said the visits highlighted the country's weak health system. - 'A failure of leadership' - Last week his aide Shehu launched a book, titled "According to the President: Lessons from a Presidential Spokesperson's Experience", in which according to local media he confessed to fabricating a 2017 story about rats' invasions at the presidential office, to shift Nigerians focus away from concerns over the leader's health. Buhari had spent nearly three months away receiving treatment in Britain. "When the surge in calls for explanation of why the president would be working from home, if truly he had recovered his health and fit for the office came, I said to the reporters that the office, which had been in disuse, needed renovation because rats may have eaten and damaged some cables," he wrote in the book, according to local media. The rake-thin 82-year-old Muslim from Nigeria's far north made history as the first opposition candidate to defeat an incumbent leader at the ballot box in 2015. His election victory in a country where re-election for the incumbent had been taken for granted was seen as a rare opportunity for Nigeria to change course. But his time at the helm failed to halt the country's long-standing issues of graft and insecurity, while the oil giant was further dogged by economic woes. Despite concerns about his fragile health, his economic policies, the extent of his claims about better security, as well as the targets of his campaign against graft, he secured a second term in 2019. In a 2020 opinion piece for The New York Times, Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie charged that his tenure in office had shown "a failure of leadership", writing that the 'government of President Muhammadu Buhari has long been ineffectual, with a kind of wilful indifference.'

India eyes deeper energy ties with Kuwait, Nigeria; pitches E&P expansion to Shell, bp at OPEC meet
New Delhi: India is preparing to explore nearly 2.5 lakh sq km of new offshore and onshore acreage under one of the world's largest bidding rounds, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said during a series of bilateral and business meetings held at the 9th OPEC International Seminar in Vienna. During his interaction with Kuwaiti Oil Minister Tareq Sulaiman Al-Roumi, Puri discussed ways to strengthen bilateral energy ties. Kuwait is India's sixth-largest source of crude oil, fourth-largest source of LPG, and eighth-largest hydrocarbon trade partner. In a separate meeting with Nigeria's Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Heineken Lokpobiri, Puri explored opportunities to expand hydrocarbons trade. The discussion followed their previous engagement in Davos in 2024. Indian refiners have been consistent buyers of Nigerian crude. The minister also met Shell CEO Wael Sawan to discuss potential collaborations in light of India's exploration and production plans. 'Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, India is set to explore nearly 2.5 lakh square kilometres in new offshore and onshore areas,' Puri said. He added that India's target to raise the share of natural gas in its energy mix from 6% to 15% offers scope for partnerships in advanced technologies. Puri met OPEC Secretary General Haitham Al Ghais to discuss India's ties with the grouping and the need to maintain a balanced and predictable oil market amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainties. India is the world's third-largest oil importer. The minister also held talks with bp CEO Murray Auchincloss to discuss the company's ongoing and future participation in India's upstream and downstream sectors. bp has been active in the country through its involvement in the OALP bidding rounds and joint ventures in retail, natural gas, and compressed biogas. The company also operates a global business and technology centre in Pune. In another meeting with Vitol Group CEO Russel Hardy, Puri reviewed current global energy market conditions and discussed potential areas of cooperation across the hydrocarbons value chain. Responding to questions on India's crude oil imports from Russia, Puri said, 'Russia produces over 9 million barrels per day. If, out of global oil supplies of around 97 million barrels, 9 million barrels had suddenly vanished, the entire world would have had to reduce consumption by over 10%, which is impossible.' He clarified that Indian companies have not bought any sanctioned Russian cargoes. 'Russian oil was never under global sanctions... It was only placed under a price cap,' he said. Puri said India had contributed to global price stability. 'Even as global prices of LPG soared last year, Prime Minister ensured that our 330 million households continued to receive clean cooking gas at one of the lowest prices globally,' he added.>

Petroleum minister Puri talks to Opec about ensuring balance and predictable global oil market
New Delhi: Union petroleum and natural gas minister Hardeep Singh Puri has spoken to Haitham Al Ghais, the secretary general of Opec, on ways to ensure that oil markets remain balanced and predictable, an official statement said on Thursday. During the 9th Opec International Seminar in Vienna on Wednesday, the minister also met several stakeholders in the oil and gas space, including Heineken Lokpobiri, Nigerian minister of state for petroleum resources; Wael Sawan, CEO of Shell; Murray Auchincloss, CEO of bp; and Russel Hardy, Group CEO of Vitol. The statement said that at the seminar, Puri met the secretary general of Opec. "They discussed India's strong partnership with Opec and ways to ensure that oil markets remain balanced and predictable to support smooth global transition into green and alternative energies, particularly in light of recent geopolitical challenges. As the world's 3rd largest importer of oil, India and Opec, the grouping of major oil producers, share a unique and symbiotic relationship," the statement said. The talks come as the global oil market emerged from a very volatile scenario last month amid the Israel-Iran conflict. On 5 July, Opec and its allies, commonly known as 'Opec+', agreed that starting August 2025, they would increase production by 548,000 barrels per day. This move has eased supply concerns and prices in the market. In his meeting with Murray Auchincloss, CEO of bp, Puri shared that they took forward the ongoing dialogue on strengthening bp's partnership in India's upstream and downstream energy sector, the statement said. bp has a longstanding and comprehensive engagement in India across the energy value chain and also participated in the ninth round of auctions under the Open Acreage Licensing Policy (OALP). The discussions also covered India's plans to aggressively enhance its domestic exploration and production (E&P) capabilities by exploring 2.5 lakh sq km under OALP Round-10. Indian energy companies have partnered with bp for E&P investment globally and are now collaborating in retail, natural gas, and compressed biogas. The minister and Russel Hardy, Vitol's Group CEO, discussed current challenges in the global energy markets and collaborations across the hydrocarbons value chain. Puri's meeting with the Shell CEO was focused on potential collaborations in light of India's ambitious exploration and production plans. The minister noted that India is set to explore nearly 2.5 lakh square km in new offshore and onshore areas, marking one of the world's largest bidding rounds. He underlined that India's efforts to increase the share of natural gas in its energy mix from 6% to 15% present significant opportunities for advanced technological partnerships. He added that the drive towards greater exploration and production activity stands to benefit from Shell's cutting-edge technologies, paving the way for mutually beneficial collaborations that support India's energy security objectives.
