Review: A day at Fahid Beach Club by Barbossa

Sun, sand, and marvellous Mexican fare…
In Abu Dhabi, we love our islands. All 200 of them. 3 of 12
That said, a certain few have been in the headlines over the last little while. When you're talking thrills, it's Yas Island. Housing? Al Reem. The best beaches in the region, Saadiyat. A whole different world? Sir Bani Yas Island. The list goes on.
But if you've been down a YouTube rabbit hole lately, chances are you'll have caught Steve Harvey and his signature grin in a new commercial by Al Dar Properties. In the video, he tells a motorboat skipper to 'Follow those kites!' before he finds himself on Fahid Island, to his pleasant surprise.
Here's a closer look at Fahid Beach Club by Barbossa. It's been in town less than six months, and it's making waves.
Images: supplied Getting there
Fahid Beach Club by Barbossa is the capital's newest beach escape, and is right off Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street, when you're city bound from Yas Island/Dubai. It's a quick, sharp exit, and the space almost sprouts up from nowhere.
When you plan to make a day of it, make sure you have a reservation first, and follow that up by arriving within 15 minutes of the scheduled time – otherwise, your reservation gets released and there's a long line of eager beach-goers that are waiting to snap it up. There's plenty of parking space, and as we glance out, more cars with Dubai plates pull in – the news of Fahid Beach Club's been doing the rounds. Check-in is quick and easy. First feel
You're led into a bohemian space that opens with the centrepiece of it all, their bustling bar. Lively beats ring through the air – it's the weekend in Abu Dhabi. There's an almost rustic charm to it, but the space doesn't forsake the luxury this city's crowd's gotten so accustomed to.
Whether you plan to sit at the bar, book a cabana, or flop down in a chair, you'll feel white sand in your toes within seconds. While Fahid Beach Club by Barbossa doesn't have a pool, it does have gorgeous open water with near-Maldivian hues. White sand and turquoise water is a combination like pizza and a cold one. Win. The experience itself
A man picks up his pooch, strokes it, and sets it back down. Steps away, a family of four flops down in a cabana, leafing through a leatherbound menu of Barbossa's popular Mexican fare. Pet-friendly (until 7pm) and child-friendly (until 6pm), this spot delivers a laid-back beachside hangout beautifully, and everyone's invited, and welcome.
Whether it's their fully-redeemable day-pass beginning from Dhs150, ladies' night under the stars on Friday from 9pm, or just sun-drenched weekend vibes that have you leaving your laptops and whiteboards behind in the city, Fahid Beach Club by Barbossa is an experience you'll savour.
Three shiny Barbossa-branded food trucks, lined up side-by-side in a corner gleam in the sun, as servers pick up your order in double time. From truffle-fries to the Barbossa signature nachos (Dhs65) to their salmon poke bowl (Dhs65), you'll get all of your favourite Barbossa bites here, and like on Yas Bay, some stunning views to go with it all. There's a reason Barbossa won What's On Abu Dhabi's Best Independent Brunch award earlier this month, so we don't need to say too much more about the food itself. Our thoughts
Can you relax with a glass of brut here? Indeed, you can. Will you spot a crab as you wade into the water? Quite possible. Fahid Beach Club by Barbossa revels in Abu Dhabi-esque manmade luxury, while staying true to what it fundamentally is – a beach.
Look, we were hesitant about hitting the beach in April with the way the mercury's been yo-yoing of late. Fortunately, there was a breeze out, and the beach-goers came in droves. We're glad we went, and you will be, too.
What's On verdict: Embrace your inner islander and head to this escape for a great day out on the beach.

With ‘Ring Ring,' Rubio captures the California she grew up in

Niko Rubio knew she always wanted to be a singer. The hard part was figuring out what she wanted to sound like. The 24-year-old singer-songwriter, who was born in the Los Angeles South Bay and is of Mexican and Salvadoran descent, was always encouraged by her family to pursue her artistic ambitions. When Rubio was a preteen, her maternal grandmother even pushed her to audition for 'La Voz Kids,' the Spanish offshoot of 'The Voice' for singers under the age of 15. She wasn't picked for the show, but it reaffirmed her belief that she was meant to be a singer. 'I'm the first generation that is allowed to sing, that has the opportunity to really not have a baby,' she said. 'To say 'Grandma, grandpa, I'm not going to go to college. I'm going to go figure out how to be a songwriter.'' Like many children of immigrants in Southern California, Rubio grew up listening to music in English and Spanish. Her grandfather Sergio would play Pedro Infante and Shakira, while her mother, Vilma, exposed her to the likes of Sublime and No Doubt. Rubio, who's very close to her maternal grandparents, said they wanted her to sing traditional Mexican music, but it was a piece of advice from her mom that relieved some of the pressure she might have been feeling. In 'Ring Ring,' she does exactly that. The four-track EP, released on July 15 on Atlantic Records, is an expression of her upbringing and explores what it means to grow up bilingual and first generation in this country at this time. Instruments that are staples of traditional Mexican music underpin catchy pop ballads sung in Spanish. 'Baby,' the EP's first track, opens with the accordion before Rubio's sultry voice kicks in. In 'Quisiera Saber,' Rubio beckons to someone she desires but cannot have in a dreamy intonation, channeling Lana del Rey and backed by percussion and strings reserved for boleros romanticos. Rubio began her career in the world of alt-R&B and alt-rock. At 19, she signed with independent label Sandlot Records, founded by songwriter Jacob Kasher, who has written for Britney Spears, Selena Gomez, Maroon 5, Dua Lipa and Lady Gaga. She looks back on her early work fondly, but recognizes she was still learning who she was as an artist. 'I was so young,' she says. 'My first EP [2021's 'Wish You Were Here'] is like a very pop, alt-rock project that I love and I'm very proud of, but I was just too afraid. I didn't have the knowledge or really the understanding of myself.' And though the EP did include a track in Spanish — 'Amor' — her sound was missing a key component: her Latino roots. She wanted to capture a mix of the California she grew up in. 'I had this idea of making this alternative Mexican California beach rock-meets-mariachi romanticos kind of album,' she said. 'I told the whole team, I told my whole label: 'I'm making two projects in Spanish. I'm taking a break from English. This is what I have to do for my family. This is what I have to do for myself.'' She agonized over what it would sound like. 'I didn't want to just be another Latin artist that was making another thing for the void that wasn't going to be special, or say anything, or tell the right story,' she said. She eventually found the perfect collaborator in Grammy Award-winning producer Lester Mendez. Rubio says she admired how Mendez tapped into Shakira's Lebanese and Colombian influences in her 2005 album 'Fijación Oral, Vol. 1.' She wanted something like that for her own work — an eclectic blend of personal influences. The two worked on 'Mar y Tierra,' Rubio's first Spanish-language EP released last September. It features the standout track 'Sirena,' a bossa-nova-influenced romantico duet with Hawthorne-based singer Cuco. Tribune News Service

Aamir Khan to release 'Sitaare Zameen Par' on YouTube

Aamir Khan has made an unusual move by choosing to release his latest sports drama Sitaare Zameen Par directly on YouTube after its run in theatres. The film will be available from August 1 on YouTube Movies on demand at Rs 100 (Dh4.5 approximately) and will skip other digital platforms. The approach aims to make the film accessible to people, especially those who do not have access to theatres or streaming services. It will also be available in 38 other countries, including the US, UK, and Australia, with prices suited to local markets. "For the past 15 years, I have been struggling with the challenge of how to reach audiences who do not have geographical access to theatres, or those who are unable to make it to theatres for various reasons," Khan, who also produced the film, said in a statement. "With our government bringing in UPI and India becoming number one in the world in electronic payments, with internet penetration in India having grown dramatically and growing every day, and with YouTube being on most devices, we can finally reach vast sections of people in India, and a significant part of the world." The release will come with subtitles and dubbed versions in several languages to cater to wider audiences. Sitaare Zameen Par is a sequel to the 2007 blockbuster Taare Zameen Par. In the sports drama, Aamir plays the role of a basketball coach who is tasked with training a group of neurodivergent children. It also stars Genelia Deshmukh. The film, directed by RS Prasanna, hit theatres on June 20.
