Citing "uncertainty" over ISL's future, Bengaluru FC "indefinitely" suspends salaries of players
The ISL, which is usually held from September to April, has been put on hold due to ongoing differences between the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and the board's partner, Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL). While taking the current situation into account, Bengaluru FC have "indefinitely" suspended the salaries.
The 2018-19 ISL title winners claimed that they were left with no choice but to take such an action due to the lack of clarity regarding India's top-tier football league's future.
"In view of the uncertainty surrounding the future of the Indian Super League season, Bengaluru Football Club has taken what is a very difficult decision of indefinitely suspending the salaries of players and staff belonging to the First Team. Running and sustaining a football club in India has always been an uphill climb, one that we have put everything aside and made, season after season," BFC said in a statement.
Amid the ongoing issue, AIFF on Monday announced that a meeting has been scheduled with CEOs from eight Indian Super League (ISL) clubs for Thursday in the national capital to discuss the matter with the nation's top-tier football tournament.
"However, the lack of clarity on the League's future leaves us with no choice but to take this step. The future and well-being of our players, staff, and their families is of utmost importance to us, and we are in touch with them as we wait for a resolution," the statement added.
The current decision has resulted in the salaries of captain Sunil Chhetri, other players and staff members being suspended. However, the club confirmed that the youth teams will remain unaffected by this decision. Bengaluru FC urged the AIFF and FSFL to take a prompt decision and end the impasse quickly.
"The Club remains committed to growing and developing the sport and our operations with our youth teams - men and women - and BFC Soccer Schools remain unaffected by this decision. We urge the AIFF and FSDL to end this impasse swiftly. The uncertainty benefits no one, and a prompt resolution is vital for the future of Indian football," the statement concluded. (ANI)

TG athletes can gain from new sports policy
If Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has his say and goes all-out to implement his ambitious sports agenda, then the State, and its capital city in particular, will boast of world-class sports infrastructure across disciplines in the next couple of years. On the face of it, this is a praiseworthy effort as the bane of the Indian political apparatus has been the insipid promotion of sports, baring a select few. Budgetary allocations for sports have never been inspirational. In fact, the neglect is such that some allocations have been reduced here and there. The ambitiously carved out 32-page sports policy unveiled by Revanth Reddy the other day makes for a wonderful reading as he promises everything under the moon to realise his dream of making the state the hub of international sports. The comprehensive vision lays stress on strengthening governance, boosting infrastructure, and ushering in a breathtaking sports ecosystem that would result in the emergence of medal-winning athletes. There is no doubt that once he goes about the implementation process and enhances budgetary allocations, there would be smiles on the faces of countless sportspersons, coaches and the support staff. Over a period, Telangana can indeed be the envy of the nation going by the manner it brings about the best of infrastructure and sports avenues, including supporting budding talent coming from the poorer strata. Alas, carried away by the moment, Reddy revealed the politician in him when he spoke rather exaggeratedly that Hyderabad would be fit enough to host some Olympic disciplines by 2036. This is too ambitious a remark given that preparing grounds and facilities and putting in place infrastructure of an extraordinary kind for the mega event is no child's play. What the city has, as of now, is not sound enough to host even a fraction of the events that feature in Olympics. He should take cue from his political mentor N Chandrababu Naidu, who, in his effort to provide the best of facilities for the 2002 National Games, came up with the finest stadiums and playing surfaces. Budget was no problem. J Jayalalithaa constructed the magnificent JN stadium in nine months. Can Revanth Reddy emulate these records? The fact is that the stadiums constructed by Naidu like GMC Balayogi athletics stadium, KVBR stadium, tennis complex and the velodrome are all outdated as the wear and tear must have worn them out. They need to be refurbished before the city is good enough to host the National Games two years down the line, towards which Reddy is to approach the Indian Olympic Association. However, realising the herculean task that lies up ahead, the Chief Minister has played his masterstroke-a Public Private Participation (PPP). This will go a long way in helping him realise the dream of nurturing Olympic gold medallists and world champions across disciplines. Adding to this is the smart move to constitute a 14-member Board of Governors to oversee handling of the Telangana Sports Development Fund (TSDF). Featuring some big names from the world of sports and industry, including Kapil Dev, Abhinav Bindra, Pullela Gopichand and Bhaichung Bhutia, it will be headed by industrialist Sanjeev Goenka, which ensures transparent and accountable utilisation of resources that will be raised through the PPP mode. A good beginning has been made as the state was able to sign MoUs with many keen investors and sponsors. This can help promote exchange programmes with other nations and invest in proven international coaches. Hopefully, this will mark the beginning of rewarding days for sportspersons from Telangana.

Debutant Krishna, who had a memorable start to his career, should be included in the Indian squad for the upcoming seasons. Congratulations to the new Team India captain Shubman Gill for leading from the front. Gutsy players never buckle under pressure is what was demonstrated by the young Indian squad. Five players who deserve special praise, include Yashasvi (for a magnificent century), Akash Deep and Jadeja (for their invaluable half-centuries each) and Mohd. Siraj (for his superb second innings five-wicket spell after the four scalps in the first innings) and Prasidh Krishna (for getting five wickets). Meanwhile, the shell-shocked England should ponder on how to improve its tailenders' batting. Over decades, crores of devotees from all corners of the world come on pilgrimage to Tirumala Hills for a blissful stay and devotional darshan. The trust board chief's move to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) for queue management may not serve the 'intended' purpose. One should note that as far as India is concerned, AI applications are in still in an experimental stage. Moreover, the Chairman has to discuss with all his employees about the AI utility in queue management efforts, rather than stick to his unilateral decision. In fact, he should be discussing with his staff on ensuring complaint-free services to Tirumala-bound pilgrims. All pilgrims should have updated information, easy to book accommodation, darshan and seva access without any trouble. In the meanwhile, the Chairman can utilize AI-driven services on an experimental basis in his office. As and when it succeeds, he can plan queue management. G Murali Mohan Rao, Secunderabad-11 Punish the army officer for assaulting airline staff It is very unfortunate that a man of honour, who is in the rank of a Lieutenant Colonel, assaulted and severely injured the ground staff at the Srinagar International Airport on July 26. They were merely doing their duty by reminding the officer about aviation protocols. As he was carrying 16 kgs, he was asked to pay for the extra luggage. The enraged officer assaulted the ground staff of Spice Jet. One suffered spinal cord fracture; another had a jaw fracture, while a third was left with a bleeding nose. It is very bad on the part of the army to manhandle the staff who were on their duty. Is this the army discipline one talks of? A sad irony is that aviation is lately in headlines for all the wrong reasons. A male passenger urinating on a female and airline staff misbehaving with a passenger are incidents that bring disrepute to the aviation sector.
