Dividend stocks are in focus as concerns for a higher-for-longer interest rate scenario rise and investors turn to stable companies to offset potential volatility. Dividend stocks also perform well when interest rates are going down. Ed Clissold, Chief U.S. Strategist at Ned Davis Research, said on CNBC a few months back that dividend stocks outperforming non-dividend-paying companies during the Fed's easing cycles has been a "pretty consistent" trend over the past few decades.
But which dividend stocks can help you reach a stable and significant income? Let's see a case study for ideas.

Microsoft reaches $4 trillion market value, joins Nvidia

Microsoft chairperson and CEO Satya Nadella speaks while in Tokyo, Japan in November of 2018. File Photo by Keizo Mori/UPI | License Photo July 31 (UPI) -- Microsoft jumped past the $4 trillion market value mark Thursday, joining Nvidia as only the second public company ever to achieve the financial feat. Its shares shot up almost 8% after the tech company reported earning $76.7 billion in revenue last quarter, with a net income earning of $27.2 billion, a 24% rise. It also showed that its Azure cloud computing platform is bringing in an annual $75 billion, growing 34% year-over-year. All these positive fiscal wins brought the company over $4 trillion in after-hours trading Wednesday, and after opening over that value Thursday, it became a member of a now-two-member club with Nvidia. Apple stands as the third most-valued company at around $3.2 trillion, but its stock has sunk so far in 2025, down around 17%. Its current financial status will be even clearer by the weekend, as it is slated to report its quarterly results Thursday after the closing bell. "Cloud and AI is the driving force of business transformation across every industry and sector," said Microsoft chairperson and CEO Satya Nadella in a press release Wednesday. "We're innovating across the tech stack to help customers adapt and grow in this new era, and this year, Azure surpassed $75 billion in revenue, up 34%, driven by growth across all workloads." The company declared itself "the leader in Cloud and AI infrastructure," in a social media post Wednesday.

Microsoft ends tradition of naming competitors in regulatory filings

Microsoft has abandoned a decades-long tradition of calling out the names of its rivals in regulatory documents. When the 50-year-old technology company released its annual report Wednesday, the 101-page document contained zero references to longtime foes Apple and IBM. Nor did it mention privately held challengers such as Anthropic or Databricks. Last year's Microsoft annual report officially designated over 25 companies as competitors. The names of Microsoft's enemies have appeared in its annual reports at least since 1994. The omission means Microsoft is breaking from a common industry practice. Apple, Meta and Nvidia all namedrop the companies they go up against. It's not universally followed, though. Amazon has not identified competitors in annual reports since 1999. Tesla last did it in 2020, and Alphabet halted after 2022. Now, Microsoft just says it faces competition in a wide variety of markets, including productivity software, PC operating systems and cloud infrastructure. The more specific disclosures helped to show where companies stood with the biggest name in software. In 2024, Microsoft started referring to key partner OpenAI as a competitor, after the artificial intelligence startup introduced a web search feature. A Microsoft spokesperson told CNBC that the company updated the competition portion of the annual report to address larger categories. The new format reflects the fast-moving nature of the markets in which the company operates, the spokesperson said. That's not to say Microsoft executives have stopped tracking developments at other technology companies. CEO Satya Nadella referred to Amazon on Microsoft's earnings call on Wednesday. Scott Guthrie, executive vice president of Microsoft's cloud and AI group, said at a conference in May that "there are some cloud providers, like AWS, that still haven't launched a GB200 offering." Nvidia's GB200 NVL72 systems include 72 interconnected graphics processing units. Microsoft shares climbed Thursday, a day after the company issued quarterly results and guidance that came in better than expected. The stock move sent the company's market capitalization past the $4 trillion mark.

Microsoft Hits $4 Trillion Market Cap After Earnings Beat

(Bloomberg) -- Microsoft Corp. has become the second company in the world to reach a $4 trillion market capitalization after reporting quarterly earnings that beat Wall Street's expectations, sending the stock soaring in premarket Thursday. The World's Data Center Capital Has Residents Surrounded An Abandoned Art-Deco Landmark in Buffalo Awaits Revival We Should All Be Biking Along the Beach Budapest's Most Historic Site Gets a Controversial Rebuild San Francisco in Talks With Vanderbilt for Downtown Campus Shares of the technology behemoth jumped as much as 8.2% in early trading in New York, pushing its market value to $4.1 trillion. Nvidia Corp. became the first company to hit the milestone earlier this month. 'Microsoft is getting the recognition that it deserves because it is the operating system for business. All of us run our businesses on Microsoft with Word, with Outlook, with Excel,' said Kim Forrest, chief investment officer at Bokeh Capital Partners LLC. 'This quarter's results point to an even better position for Microsoft because, like Nvidia, there appear to be no substitutes.' The company's latest results confirmed that it's a leader in the artificial intelligence boom that's lifted megacap tech stocks, and the broader market, for the last few years. Microsoft reported better-than-expected growth in its cloud business, and its closely-watched Azure cloud-computing unit posted a 39% rise in sales, handily beating the 34% analysts expected. On a call with analysts, Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood said Microsoft expects fiscal first quarter capital expenditures at more than $30 billion, and full year revenue growth in the double digits. In addition, Azure is expected to post a 37% growth rate in the first quarter, above forecasts. Investors are welcoming outsized spending on AI infrastructure. Meta Platforms Inc. also lifted the low end of its forecast for 2025 capital expenditures and provided an early steer on 2026 spending. Shares in the Facebook-owner rallied as much as 13%, adding more than $223 billion to the social media giant's market cap — if gains hold, this would be its biggest single-day market value addition ever. The stocks are the second and third-best performers among the so-called Magnificent Seven mega tech stocks this year. Since its April 8 trough when President Donald Trump's sweeping tariff threats spurred a broader market selloff, the stocks surged more than 50% and are trading at record highs. This year has marked something of a rebound for Microsoft stock. It had lagged its peers in 2024 and the first quarter of 2025, the only Magnificent Seven stock in the red for that period, as investors grew concerned about its AI position and Azure growth. Wall Street is largely bullish on Microsoft shares, with 68 of the 72 analysts covering the company giving it a buy rating and one giving it a sell, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
