Swiss village cashes in as tourists pay to visit dock featured in hit K-drama 'Crash Landing On You'
Local leaders in Iseltwald and tourism officials insist the village's 406 inhabitants aren't getting rich off the influx of visitors, who pay 5 Swiss francs ($6.30) to access the dock. In 2024, entries brought in nearly 245,000 francs ($307,000), while a one-franc public pay toilet collected about 58,000 francs more, said village clerk Gabriela Blatter.
Proceeds have gone mostly to garbage disposal, restroom cleaning, additional work hours and custodial staff hires, she said.
Titia Weiland, manager of the Bönigen-Iseltwald Tourism agency, said the funds go right back to village upkeep: 'It's not correct to read it as 'the community gets rich',' alluding to some comments along those lines in the media and online.
The village, situated along a small peninsula that juts out into Lake Brienz, features majestic views of Alpine peaks over the water.
An episode in early 2020 of the cross-border Korean love story spotlighted the dock as a romantic getaway. That sparked online hype among fans of the series across Asia and beyond, which hasn't let up, fueling the rush of tourism to Iseltwald.
The continued influx has exposed growing pains for the Swiss village, like those faced by other tourist hotspots that get too much of a good thing.
Part of the problem is infrastructure: Iseltwald has three hotels and four restaurants, not enough for about 1,000 visitors who arrive by tour bus, public bus and car each day on average, according to Blatter. The village is revamping a parking lot to help cope with the strain, and the only village store now operates 7 days a week. Previously, it was open Monday to Friday.
'There were always tourists in Iseltwald. We are happy with them. The problem is that the tourists don't understand what's private and what's public,' Blatter said, adding that some traipse through private yards and gardens. 'They go everywhere.'
For months, fans of the series could visit the dock for free until the turnstile was put up in 2023 to help offset costs incurred by the local government.
Not long ago, Weiland said, 'we were wishing for more tourists in Iseltwald: In some ways, we are thankful ... but it can be extreme.' Villagers who hosted the crews for on-site filming at the dock had no idea the series would become such a runaway success, she said.
The village has a website devoted to the 'filming location' of the series that lists transportation options and entreats visitors to respect the dock, refrain from littering, and consider the 'quiet atmosphere of this authentic Swiss village' by keeping noise down and avoiding private property.
'Enjoy your stay in beautiful Iseltwald and take with you memories to your home country!' the site says.

Warning over 'hidden' reality as big change comes to iconic Aussie national park
One of Australia's most iconic national parks is about to undergo a drastic change. Litchfield National Park in the Northern Territory is about to expand by 30,000 hectares, with more campgrounds, walking trails and even a hunting range being opened to the public. But while the announcement has been largely applauded, environmental groups say more needs to be done to protect the territory's landscape. The expansion follows the government's $7.5 million purchase of 'Silkwood', a stunning parcel of land near the regional town of Adelaide River, boasting waterfalls, gorges, hot springs and 4WD tracks. Described as the largest addition to the Territory's national park estate in 25 years, the acquisition will increase the park's size by 20 per cent. Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro said the expansion was a key part of her government's vision to 'restore the Territory lifestyle'. 'This is exactly what restoring the Territory lifestyle looks like — protecting our wide-open spaces while making sure Territorians have more places to enjoy the activities we love,' she said. The new southern section of the park will eventually be opened up for camping, swimming, four-wheel-driving, exploring, and potentially hunting, delivering a boost for tourism and recreation in the region. The popular Robin Falls is included in the new expansion, with Finocchiaro promising visitors they can still bring their leashed dogs. An opening date is yet to be set, with planning and budgeting underway for roads, pathways, signage and viewing platforms. It comes just weeks after South Australia announced extensions to three national parks, adding an extra 725 acres to their estate of protected land. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lia Finocchiaro MLA (@liafinocchiaromla) Environment Centre Northern Territory (ECNT) Executive Director, Kirsty Howey, called the deal 'a positive step', but told Yahoo News the government could be doing more to protect local lands. "The Finocchiaro government has abandoned its commitment to deliver a 43 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, scrapped our renewable energy target, and unleashed bulldozers on the world's last intact tropical savanna," Howey said. "The scale of destruction is staggering, yet it occurs largely hidden from public view on pastoral estates that comprise 45 per cent of the Territory's land." In the first six months of this year, Howey said, the Finocchiaro government approved the destruction of almost 26,000 hectares of native vegetation — close to the size of the Litchfield expansion. Discovery in supermarket freezer lands man with $15,000 fine Aussie town transformed by 'rarely observed' phenomenon Brazen $300,000 act prompts 'crucial' caravan warning She pointed to the Pastoral Land Board as a key issue, accusing it of routinely approving large-scale land clearing. 'Week after week, thousands of hectares receive rubber-stamp approval for bulldozing,' she said. 'On 13 June, this same board... approved clearing 3,300 hectares at Claravale Station. This isn't just any paddock, this site contains one of only five confirmed maternity roosts for ghost bats in the entire Territory. "If habitat for bilbies and Gouldian finches were being destroyed at this rate near Melbourne or Sydney, there would be public outrage." Adding to the concern is the spread of gamba grass, a highly invasive species that dramatically increases fire risk. Experts warn that if left unchecked, the weed could overtake more than 42,000 hectares of Litchfield by 2032. 'With more than 250,000 visitors annually, Litchfield faces a silent threat,' Howey said. 'Gamba grass creates extreme fire risks that endanger both visitors and the park's unique ecosystems.' Do you have a story tip? Lucid Shatters World Record With 749-Mile Drive On A Single Charge
The widespread adoption of electric vehicles has long been hindered by a two-headed dragon: the lack of public charging infrastructure and the typical driver's range anxiety. These obstacles push automakers to find ways to improve range and show off their progress. A Lucid Air Grand Touring took the Guinness World Record for the longest trip in an EV on a single charge last weekend. The luxury sedan completed an impressive 749-mile journey between St. Moritz, Switzerland and Munich, Germany, shattering the previous record by nearly 100 miles. Behind the wheel of the Lucid was Umit Sabanci, a London-based entrepreneur who has the eccentric hobby of breaking Guinness World Records. In 2017, Sabanci set the record for visiting the most countries in 24 hours by scheduled transportation. He and a friend darted to 13 countries across Europe. In 2022, he completed the fastest circumnavigation of the Earth by scheduled flights. Sabanci flew a three-flight itinerary from and to Los Angeles International Airport in 46 hours and 23 minutes via Doha, Qatar and Brisbane, Australia. Sabanci previously worked with Lucid. He broke the record driving to the most countries on a single charge in June 2024. The vanity record breaker drove 567 miles southward through the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Liechtenstein and Italy. In a statement regarding the single-charge distance record, he said: "When I completed the nine-country journey in 2024, it was just the beginning. This new achievement takes that journey even further. I'm proud to be part of a movement that proves electric mobility isn't just the future; it's already redefining what's possible today." Read more: These Are The Cars Our Readers Wish Would Depreciate Faster If his background didn't show it, he isn't an elite-level EV hypermiling tuner. The run was done in collaboration with Lucid. The California-based manufacturer likely provided the modifications and expertise necessary to extend the drive far beyond the Lucid Air Grand Touring's EPA-estimated range of 516 miles. Lucid has stripped the record from a privately run Mercedes-Benz EQS 450+. The previous record of 645 miles was set just last month and broke the symbolic 1,000-kilometer barrier. One can only hope that competition for bragging rights between manufacturers will drive the record even further out and lead to technology that will become standard across all EVs. It's hard to believe that we're only three years removed from Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX's unveiling. The German automaker built a hyper-efficient electric concept car to prove that an electric vehicle could have 1,000 kilometers of range. However, the one-off car was designed as a bland, blobby teardrop to minimize drag, taking function over form to the extreme. Now, we're seeing typically styled electric cars blasting past the 1,000-km mark. It's impressive to see how far EVs have progressed in recent years, and hopefully, this level of development won't stop. Want more like this?
