'Between Glances' exhibition explores shared humanity across cultures
AMMAN — A collection of portraits, each telling a different story, yet all bound by a common thread, captures the essence of humanity beyond borders, identities, and differences.
Mexican Photographer Alessia Ramponi, through her exhibition Between Glances, tried to show that people can unite and understand each other regardless of origins and contexts.
Beyond borders and landscapes, she believes that the true essence of a culture is reflected in the faces and stories of those who build it every day.
'The exhibition brings these pictures to life, allowing them to tell stories about different places, cultures, and people. At the same time, it reminds us that we are all humans, and this lens unites us,' Ramponi told The Jordan Times.
Organised by the Mexican embassy in Jordan, in collaboration with Fann wa Chai Art Gallery in Amman, the exhibition runs from March 5 to April 4, as part of a series of cultural events celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations between Jordan and Mexico.
The opening day of the exhibition was attended by the Spanish, Australian, and Thai ambassadors to Jordan, as well as representatives from UNHCR and the embassies of the Philippines, Chile, Germany and Kazakhstan.
The exhibition features more than 35 portraits representing Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Egypt, India, Japan, Jordan, Mexico, Nepal, Pakistan, Thailand, Uganda, and Western New Guinea.
Ramponi, who chose to live in Jordan as part of her work with NGOs, finds hospitality a key connection between the two countries, saying: 'People here are very welcoming and warm, which is something that connects both cultures.'
One of her portraits, representing Jordan, was taken two years ago in Jerash. 'It reflects both the present and past of Jordan, the archaeological site, the person in traditional costume, and what he symbolises in the Jerash ruins,' she noted.
Moving between the crowds through the exhibition, a large portrait supporting Gaza commands attention. Ramponi expressed that 'as a human' it is impossible to remain silent on such issues and is grateful for any opportunity to show support.
Her work also documents her journey as a solo traveller.
Ramponi acknowledged the challenges of being a solo female traveller but stressed the importance of adaptation. 'You have to adapt to the country you visit. Be mindful of your surroundings, dress appropriately, and approach people with respect,' she advised.
Reflecting on her journey in photography, Ramponi shared how her passion evolved. 'When I started travelling years ago, social media wasn't around. Photography was my way of sharing what I saw with those who weren't with me. Eventually, I began receiving invitations to exhibit my work,' she said.
She added: 'When I discovered photography could also be a powerful tool to share stories, I knew I wanted to pursue it further.'
Concluding, she highlighted: 'These pictures are also part of this storytelling that we're all humans. They are glances of the world.'

Thousands celebrate baby hippo Moo Deng's first birthday at a Thailand zoo
Ammon News - Thousands of excited fans flocked to a Thai zoo on Thursday to celebrate the first birthday of Moo Deng, the adorable baby pygmy hippo that has become a social media sensation. The Khao Kheow Open Zoo was overrun with Moo Deng fans on the first of four days of activities marking the hippo's birthday. Children under 12 years old can enter the zoo, about a two hour drive from the capital Bangkok, for free throughout the extravaganza. Many of Moo Deng's fans flew miles to see her. Among them was Molly Swindall, who traveled from New York for the celebrations. She was seen handing a tray of food to a zoo keeper for Moo Deng's breakfast, which the baby hippo and her mother Jona quickly devoured. 'I just loved her so much and decided, you know what, I have three or four days off of work,' said Swindall, 'I can make it work to fly to Thailand. I will only be there for about 30 hours, but that's enough to go see Moo Deng. And that's exactly what I did.' By Thursday afternoon, the number of visitors reached 12,000, zoo director Narongwit Chodchoy said. Despite the noise of visitors calling out for her attention, Moo Deng appeared peaceful as she took a dip in a pond in her enclosure. Fans photographed the baby hippo with their cameras or cell phones and sang 'Happy birthday' as her birthday cake, made of a variety of fruits and vegetables, was placed near the pond. AP

Mexican Embassy commemorates 50 years of ties with Jordan
Ammon News - The Mexican Embassy in Amman hosted a reception Wednesday evening to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Jordan and Mexico. The celebration was attended by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Nancy Namrouqa, along with a number of officials, ambassadors, academics, journalists, and invited guests. On the sidelines of the event, held at the embassy premises, an art exhibition titled "Frida Through the Eyes of Young Jordanian Artists" was inaugurated. The exhibition was jointly organized by Yarmouk University and the Mexican Embassy. The exhibit features 77 works of art inspired by the iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, created by more than 70 young Jordanian artists, most of them female students from the university's Faculty of Fine Arts. Mexican Ambassador Jacob Prado emphasized that the ties between Jordan and Mexico go beyond the notable development in trade exchange and the strong institutional framework; the true strength of the bilateral relationship lies in the bonds between the two peoples. He pointed out that in the past decade alone, around 100,000 Mexican tourists have visited Jordan. He also highlighted the numerous agreements signed between Jordanian and Mexican universities, covering various fields of scientific research. The ambassador praised student and faculty exchange programs, which, in his words, build bridges of understanding and friendship between future generations. He also affirmed that the artworks on display are a testament to the special connection young Jordanian artists have formed with Mexico. For his part, Ambassador Khaled Al-Qudah, Director General of the Americas Department at the Ministry of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs, affirmed the historical friendship between Jordan and Mexico and reiterated the two countries' commitment to pursuing peace and prosperity.
