Marchan leads Harper-less Phillies over Braves 5-4 in doubleheader opener for 23rd win in 29 games
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Backup catcher Rafael Marchan hit a two-run homer, drove in the go-ahead run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the eighth inning and caught two runners stealing, helping the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves 5-4 in in a doubleheader opener Thursday.
Phillies star Bryce Harper missed the game, two days after he was hit on the right elbow by a 95.3 mph pitch from Spencer Strider. The NL East-leading Phillies won for the 23rd time 29 games and dealt the Braves their sixth loss in seven games.
Jordan Romano walked three and allowed a single in the ninth before Eli White took a slider on the low, outside corner for a game-ending called third strike, giving the closer his eighth save in 10 chances.
Marchan put the Phillies ahead 2-0 in the third scored with a headfirst slide on Trea Turner's fifth-inning infield single. He was nicked on a shin protector by a bounced slider from Daysbel Hernandez (3-1).
Marchan threw out Fairchild for the final out of the fourth and Ozzie Albies for the first out of the ninth, both on attempts to steal second.
Jose Ruiz (1-0) retired Nick Allen on a groundout to strand a runner on second in the eighth.
Sean Murphy homered and had an RBI single, and Ronald Acuña Jr. had a pair of hits and an RBI for the Braves. Acuña entered in the fourth after Fairchild appeared to hurt a finger on his right hand during a slide.

The Phillies used several players in the closer role after Alvarado's suspension before acquiring Jhoan Duran in a trade with Minnesota for two top prospects last week. Alvarado had a 2.70 ERA, 25 strikeouts and seven saves in 20 appearances before the suspension. The 30-year-old will lose $4.5 million, half his $9 million salary this year as part of a $22 million, three-year contract he signed in 2023, as a result of the suspension. Alvarado is 19-26 with a 3.40 ERA in 399 relief appearances and one start over nine major league seasons with Tampa Bay (2017-20) and the Phillies (2021-25). Speedway Classic home run car activated twice at Bristol Motor Speedway
Saturday and Sunday marked a day of firsts for MLB. The Atlanta Braves and the Cincinnati Reds played in the first Speedway Classic — the first game to take place inside a race track — at Bristol Motor Speedway. The game was suspended due to rain and resumed Sunday. Braves outfielder Eli White activated the game's home run car in the fifth inning when he crushed a three-run homer to left field. When he did, a Chevrolet Corvette zoomed around the track with a home run flag hanging out the window. You can watch it here. The car was activated a second time thanks to White when he homered for the second time. 'It's super special for me,' White told FOX sports after the game.
