Nitish Kumar 'On The Job': 35% Quota For Bihar Women In Govt Posts, Youth Commission To Be Set Up
Last Updated: The chief minister announced the decisions even as his government has been facing criticism from the opposition and some allies over poll-bound Bihar's law and order situation Amid heightened criticism and attacks from the opposition on the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar has come up with a scheme to woo women voters. The Bihar government has announced a 35% reservation for women candidates who are original residents of the state in all direct recruitment for government services and all types of posts. Earlier order modified The move is a tweak of the July 2016 order, where 35 per cent reservation in state government jobs was open to all women. Women have traditionally supported Nitish Kumar, especially his decision of 'Sharabbandi" or alcohol ban. The latest decision is meant to cement the support of this vote bank further ahead of this year's assembly elections. Recent poll results from Madhya Pradesh to Maharashtra have also shown that women-centric schemes announced by incumbent governments have paid rich dividends. Youth Commission to generate employment opportunities for Bihar's youngsters 'I am happy to inform that in order to provide maximum employment opportunities to the youth of Bihar, train them and empower and enable them, the State Government has decided to set up Bihar Youth Commission and today the Cabinet has approved the constitution of Bihar Youth Commission," Nitish Kumar posted on social media. The commission, as per the Bihar government, will advise it on generating opportunities for youngsters and will coordinate with departments to ensure better education and employment for the youth. The Bihar Youth Commission will have a chairperson, two vice-presidents, and seven members. The commission will work with the private sector too to ensure opportunities for the Bihari youth, as well as those studying outside the state. Keeping with his pet theme of alcohol ban, Nitish Kumar posted on X that the commission will also work towards drug prevention. 'It will also be an important task to prepare a programme for prevention of alcohol and other drugs that promote social evils and send recommendations to the government in such cases. The visionary initiative of the State Government aims to make the youth self-reliant, efficient and employment oriented through this Commission so that their future is secured," Nitish Kumar said. The decision was immediately welcomed by Chirag Paswan, whose party, LJP (RV), has joined the opposition to criticise the Bihar government over the murder of businessman Gopal Khemka. 'Setting up of the Youth Commission is an important part of the vision of 'Bihar First-Bihari First'. My party Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) and I warmly welcome this decision and express gratitude to the Hon'ble Chief Minister," Chirag Posted on X. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. PAC calls for Aadhaar review, flags high failure rate of biometric verification
Parliament's Public Accounts Committee has called for a review of the functioning of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), flagging several concerns, including the high rate of failure of Aadhaar biometric verification which can lead to many beneficiaries being excluded from social welfare schemes. At its meeting on Thursday (July 17, 2025), the committee, headed by senior Congress leader K.C. Venugopal, received a briefing from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) team which produced a 2021 report on the UIDAI. The panel also listened to oral evidence from officials of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and the UIDAI itself. 'This is a common man's issue. We flagged various problems and have raised several questions,' Mr. Venugopal told reporters at the conclusion of the meeting. Changing biometrics Across party lines, MPs on the committee pointed out that biometric verification failure is a serious issue since the majority of the government's social welfare schemes are tied directly to Aadhaar. This has led to many eligible beneficiaries being prevented from recieving food rations or jobs, under schemes such as the Public Distribution System or the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, because their biometric data no longer matches the UIDAI record. The UIDAI officials, according to sources, explained that in many cases of people doing hard labour, their fingerprints are not read properly by the machines. In the case of elderly people, there is often a failure in matching iris patterns. However, the officials also insisted that the UIDAI is constantly upgrading its systems to address these challenges. Data leaks and duplicates Sources said that several MPs also cited various reports to underline the dangers of data leaks. The UIDAI officials claimed that their central repository is unbreachable, and their investigations have shown that whatever leak has been reported has come from the enrolment centres. They added that UIDAI has strengthened the monitoring mechanism to plug all holes. Some estimates suggest that there are more Aadhaar cards currently in use than the total population of the country, indicating possible duplications as well as delays in deactivating the cards of the deceased. The UIDAI officials said that in the case of the deceased, it is dependent on voluntary deactivation. The PAC directed the UIDAI to act proactively to clean up the list of Aadhaar card holders.

Kishan Reddy seeks CM Revanth's partnership to take up green energy plants under Coal Ministry
Union Minister of Coal & Mines G. Kishan Reddy has urged Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to partner with the Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs) under his ministry, including Coal India Limited (CIL) and NLC India Limited (NLCIL), in taking up renewable energy projects, encompassing solar and wind power plants, Pumped Storage Projects (PSP) and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). In an official communication to the Chief Minister, a copy of which was released to the media on Thursday, the Union Minister said these initiatives are projected to attract investments in the range of ₹10,000 crore to TG over the next three years. The proposals are for development of solar power plants utilising Telangana's high solar isolation zones, deployment of advanced BESS systems to enhance grid stability and energy reliability; pre-feasibility studies and implementation of PSPs to provide critical balancing capacity; and formation of joint venture models with State PSUs or on a standalone basis by the coal companies, to ensure faster project execution and maximize local economic benefits. All these proposals and projects would require support in the acquisition or allocation of land by the State Government. They would be instrumental in the reduction of carbon emissions, improved air quality, and sustainable natural resource management, he said. Mr. Kishan Reddy, also the Secunderabad MP, said that the proposals also offer substantial socio-economic dividends, including job creation, skill development, enhanced energy security, and affordable power access, driving inclusive growth and improved quality of life for all. To take these projects to fruition, he has requested that a structured and seamless coordination be established between the State Government and the CPSUs. This can be done with the Chief Minister's 'active and timely engagement' and interventions in ensuring swift and effective implementation of these projects. 'Your leadership in this matter can serve as a model for constructive Centre-State cooperation in building a greener and self-reliant future,' he said. Telangana's substantial renewable energy potential and the Central Government's unwavering commitment to green growth, offers an opportunity to accelerate the State's economic development and position the State as a key contributor to India's sustainable energy transition, he pointed out.
