Alexander, Peña help Astros beat Marlins and snap Miami's five-game winning streak
Alexander picked up his second win of the season after holding Miami to three hits. He struck out six and walked one.
The Astros built a 5-0 lead during a disastrous fourth by Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara (6-10), who was perfect his first time through the Houston order before giving up six hits in the inning.
Peña led off the fourth with a double. Jesús Sánchez then drove in Peña with a double in his first game against his former team, which dealt him to Houston at the trade deadline. Yainer Diaz added a two-run double, Carlos Correa had an RBI single and Christian Walker drove in another run on a fielder's choice.
Alcantara allowed nine hits and six runs. He struck out five over seven innings and threw 100 pitches.
TIGERS 6, TWINS 3
DETROIT (AP) — Kerry Carpenter homered in a three-run sixth inning and Detroit rallied for a win over Minnesota.
Wenceel Pérez and Dillon Dingler also homered for the Tigers, while Ryan Jeffers, Trevor Larnach and Matt Wallner had homers for Minnesota.
Detroit has won six of its last eight games since losing 12 of 13. The Twins have lost five of six.
Casey Mize (10-4) picked up the win, allowing three runs in six innings while Kyle Finnegan pitched the ninth for his second Tigers save. Noah Davis (0-2) took the loss in relief.
PHILLIES 13, ORIOLES 3
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Kyle Schwarber homered twice, including a grand slam Philadelphia's eight-run sixth inning, and the Phillies pounded Baltimore.
Schwarber finished with six RBIs, running his major league-leading total to 94 on the season.
Schwarber's first homer of the game was a two-run shot deep into the second deck that tied it at 3 in the third. He heard 'MVP! MVP!' chants when he came to the plate in the sixth. Schwarber, the All-Star Game MVP, launched his NL-best 40th of the season into the right-center seats off Yaramil Hiraldo for a grand slam that sent the crowd of 41,099 into a frenzy.
Harrison Bader homered for the first time since he was acquired by the Phillies at the trade deadline, a tiebreaking three-run shot earlier in the sixth.
The Phillies added closer Jhoan Duran and Bader in trades on consecutive days with Minnesota. With his 102.5 mph fastball and electric entrance, Duran was an instant fan favorite in Philly. Bader made his case with a homer off Corbin Martin.
BREWERS 3, BRAVES 1
ATLANTA (AP) — Isaac Collins hit a three-run homer, Quinn Priester allowed just one more hit over seven innings after surrendering a first-pitch home run, and Milwaukee beat Atlanta.
Priester (11-2) struck out four and walked two while throwing 90 pitches as the Brewers improved to a major league-best 68-44.
Jurickson Profar hit Priester's first pitch of the game over the right-field wall to put the Braves ahead. It was Profar's fourth home run of the year.
Collins, the NL rookie of the month, made it 3-1 in the fourth with his drive to right.
Erick Fedde (3-12), who made his first home start with the Braves, pitched 5 1/3 innings while giving up three runs. Aaron Bummer came in as relief and posted the first strikeout of the game for Atlanta in the seventh inning.
PIRATES 5, GIANTS 4
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Isiah Kiner-Falefa's fielder's choice scored Jack Suwinski with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as Pittsburgh rallied to beat San Francisco.
Kiner-Falefa hit a hard ground ball to first baseman Rafael Devers but Suwinski beat the throw home. Joey Bart's RBI single off Randy Rodriguez (3-3) earlier in the inning tied the score.
It was the fifth walk-off RBI of Kiner-Falefa's career.
Dauri Moreta (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning in his second appearance of the season for the win.
GUARDIANS 7, METS 6, 10 INNING
NEW YORK (AP) — Pete Alonso hit his 251st career homer Monday night to pull within one of Darryl Strawberry's New York Mets franchise record, but Cleveland earned a 10-inning win after squandering a five-run lead.
Gabriel Arias' 440-foot, three-run homer to left-center ended a five-run sixth inning against Sean Manaea, who surrendered RBI singles to David Fry and Carlos Santana earlier in the inning.
Alonso, starting at designated hitter for the 59th time in his career, hit a 388-foot blast to left-center in the bottom half against Slade Cecconi. The slugger has three homers in his last four games.
Alonso had his fourth hit, an RBI single, in the eighth, before Mark Vientos delivered the game-tying sacrifice fly.
Cade Smith (4-4) escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the ninth. Automatic runner Daniel Schneemann scored the tie-breaking run in the 10th, when third baseman Brett Baty threw the ball wide of second on David Fry's bunt against Ryan Helsley (3-2). Arias added a sacrifice fly.
Nic Enright earned his first career save despite allowing Baty's two-out RBI single in the 10th.
RED SOX 8, ROYALS 5
BOSTON (AP) — Jarren Duran hit a three-run homer and Brayan Bello pitched six effective innings, helping Boston beat Kansas City for their sixth consecutive victory.
Rob Refsnyder drove in two runs, and Duran added a leaping, run-saving catch in front of the Green Monster in the fourth.
Bello (8-5) allowed an unearned run and six hits. The right-hander has surrendered three earned runs or fewer in 13 of his last 14 outings.
The Royals got back-to-back home runs from Vinnie Pasquantino and Maikel Garcia off Jorge Alcala as part of a four-run eighth. But Aroldis Chapman handled the ninth for his 21st save.

The Blue Jays didn't have the busiest trade deadline, but they made some great moves nonetheless. Toronto traded for Seranthony Dominguez from the Baltimore Orioles and he has looked great in a Blue Jays uniform besides his most recent outing where he didn't record an out and allowed five runs (two unearned). They also acquired Louis Varland and Ty France from the Minnesota Twins. Varland has been outstanding this season and should play a pivotal role for Toronto moving forward. However, the best trade of the trade deadline according to The Athletic's Jim Bowden was the Blue Jays trading for Shane Bieber from the Cleveland Guardians. Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Bieber, 30, hasn't pitched in MLB this season after undergoing Tommy John surgery early in the 2024 season. He has looked fantastic in his rehab starts and is progressing toward a return very soon. 'The 2020 American League Cy Young Award winner, who has a career record of 62-32 with a 3.22 ERA, could be a difference-maker this October — if all goes well,' wrote Bowden. 'In addition, Bieber gives the Jays another strong starter for 2026, though he could decline his player option. This was a steal.' Even if Bieber declines his player option and hits free agency, he makes Toronto's starting rotation look a lot scarier. Bieber has looked practically unhittable and has ramped up to five innings of work in his latest rehab start. 'I continue to progress, feel better throughout my outings, and in between innings,' said Bieber following his start on Sunday. 'I was happy with how today finished up. All in all, just kind of dissecting the outing. There's still some things to clean up.' Bieber allowed two earned runs on five hits and one walk, striking out six. 'Everyone is fit and ready to go'
BBC Radio Manchester's Gaz Drinkwater says he is cautious of reading too much into pre-season - despite Manchester United winning the Premier League Summer Series - but there have been some positive signs. Injuries have plagued United in recent seasons but Ruben Amorim seems to now have a variety of players at his disposal. Reflecting on the USA tour on The Devils' Advocate podcast, Drinkwater said: "It matters in terms of getting the players together off the pitch and implementing tactics, but the rest doesn't really. "The good thing is that we don't have any injuries, and those that are - like Luke Shaw - look as fit as a fiddle and ready to go. "I'm not sure there are any new youngsters that are going to make themselves known this season. "There will be the existing ones that we have already seen play for Manchester United like Chido Obi, who I hope improves, and Toby Collyer, who could also have a decent season. "But we are after the experience and you can see that from the two signings we have made this summer. That has got to make the difference this season. "Everyone is fit and ready to go." WWE Raw results, highlights (Aug. 4): Seth Rollins stands tall over CM Punk, LA Knight, Roman Reigns
In the wake of one of the biggest WWE weekends of the year, "WWE Raw" stayed in the tri-state area on Monday night, emanating from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Seth Rollins gives an explanation and gets a title defense Regardless of how you felt about the overall SummerSlam weekend, it's impossible to deny that one of — if not the — high points of the two-night event was Seth Rollins' "Ruse of the Century." Here are two other near-undeniable takeaways: 1. Rollins and WWE worked nearly all of us brilliantly. It was a masterclass in protecting kayfabe at every level imaginable and will go down as one of the greatest Money in the Bank cash-ins of all time. He described how he pulled it all off during an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show earlier Monday. 2. Rollins' dedication to this angle and his year as a whole further proves that we are watching a truly generational talent. He belongs every bit in the conversation alongside Roman Reigns, John Cena and Cody Rhodes as the best WWE superstar of the past decade. Now that that's out of the way, Rollins cut a relatively generic promo to open Monday's show, but that didn't matter much because he remains incredibly over with the crowd. The big surprise came in the form of an LA Knight appearance. Knight was Rollins' opponent when the the whole fake injury angle started, and he was justifiably irked at the whole situation, challenging Rollins to a World Heavyweight Championship match that was made official by Adam Pearce. Pearce also seemingly evened the playing field by banning Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed from ringside. All of this led to the main event and our... 👑 Uncrowned Gem of the Night 👑 Even with Breakker and Reed banned from ringside, there was no shot this match was going to end clean — and surprise, surprise, it didn't. For those of you who read our own Drake Riggs' recaps week-in and week-out, you know he's not a fan of booking every match to DQ, but it had to be done here and it all worked well. After a very strong main event between Rollins and Knight, we got interference from CM Punk, who Rollins screwed two nights prior at SummerSlam. Punk's attack resulted in Knight being disqualified and making him understandably angry as well. All of this turned into chaos as Breakker and Reed rushed to help Rollins lay waste to his foes. The Vision (I think this is the new stable name for the crew, established earlier in the show) stood tall and the credits began to roll. *Billy Mays voice* But wait, there's more! As Rollins, Heyman, Breakker and Reed stood on the ramp, Roman Reigns' music hit and the OTC attacked, leading to a staredown with Rollins before he was ultimate overwhelmed by The Vision. Rollins stomped Reigns, Breakker speared him and Reed delivered a handful of tsunamis to close the show. Moving forward we now have Reigns, Knight and Punk all with legitimate beefs with Rollins directly and it's likely we'll get Reigns written off television for a little while and a World Heavyweight Championship triple threat between Rollins, Punk and Knight. Ultimately, I think this is our path to the men's War Games match in November. 🔥 Burn of the night 🔥 We're getting Becky Lynch vs. Nikki Bella for the Women's Intercontinental Championship at some point in the future. Bella got a decent pop and had a few moments in her promo, but it paled in comparison to Lynch eviscerating her on the mic (which ALMOST was our Gem of the Night). Now, if you've watched "WWE: Unreal," you know that bringing personal relationships into promos without previously clearing it can cause some issues — a la Flair and Tiffany Stratton in the WrestleMania 41 build. Considering Lynch and Bella have been in the company together for a decade, I'd be stunned if this promo wasn't discussed and planned together beforehand. It doesn't change how amazing it was. Lynch will face Maxxine Dupri next week before presumably a showdown with Natalya and then Bella. Champions of Convenience I called Flair and Alexa Bliss that during Uncrowned's live coverage of SummerSlam Night 1 and I'll be damned if the name isn't going to stick — at least in this space. Anyway, how good are Flair and Bliss together? Flair got a "you deserve it" chant from the Brooklyn crowd — something that would have been unheard of before this run. The chemistry is there, the promo work was golden, and we even got hints of the duo jelling together in the ring when they pulled off a tandem Natural Selection in a title rematch against Raquel Rodriguez and Roxanne Perez. The match was just as good as their SummerSlam bout and should be the start of a prolonged run for these two. Let's make Rh-Iyo a thing Immediately after Flair and Bliss retained, we got a backstage segment featuring the Kabuki Warriors, plus Iyo Sky and Rhea Ripley. Asuka and Kairi Sane — former women's tag champs themselves — left the two longtime rivals to talk, teasing a possible tag team forming. Ripley revealed Sky asked for and was granted a title match against Naomi and that she'd be rooting for her. The big issue here — Naomi is already slated to put her Women's World Championship on the line against Stephanie Vaquer at Clash in Paris later this month. Here's hoping Naomi-Sky next week serves as vehicle to get Ripley and Sky to team together and build some more momentum in the women's tag division. Big G joining the New Day? Before John Cena's polarizing heel turn, we had The New Day pull off one of the biggest character changes in recent history. Like Cena, the New Day's run hasn't quite hit the heights of the initial shock, but there's hope — in the form of Grayson Waller. Waller — who is going by Big G — went through a breakup of his own recently and is looking for a new crew to run with. Enter Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods, who are still "mourning" the loss of their World Tag Team Championship. Waller put on a really strong match against Penta, and despite losing with Kingston and Woods watching ringside, I can't help but feel that I care a whole lot more about Big G and the New Day linked than separate. Monday Night Meh 1. We got Sheamus versus Rusev again, which was fine, but it's about time for us to put this rivalry to bed one way or the other. The biggest reaction from the crowd came after both men were counted out and a ringside brawl broke out. Give us Sheamus vs. Rusev No DQ in a "WWE Raw" main event and have them either team up or move on after that. 2. Rusev and Sheamus' fighting continued throughout the night, including during a backstage interview segment with Sami Zayn. Zayn said Karrion Kross is in his rear-view (thankfully) and his sights were set on becoming a world champion. He's at best fourth or fifth in line to challenge and just got interrupted by a brawl in a relatively throwaway feud. There's a lot of work to do, a match against Rusev next week doesn't get him any closer. 3. Dominik Mysterio's match against Dragon Lee was very good, but the ending got a little out of hand. Mysterio's boot slipped off in a callback to 24 hours earlier in his match against A.J. Styles at SummerSlam, El Grande Americano along with two other imposters interfered and Mysterio grabbed the bottom rope to beat Lee. That's a lot to keep track of and it overshadowed the in-ring work. 🤔 Monday musings 🤔 1. Becky Lynch's new music and tron are awesome. We're so far away from the "Celtic Invasion" version of Lynch that this is a much better presentation for "The Man." 2. Michael Cole announced that Gunther suffered an orbital bone injury in his match at SummerSlam against CM Punk. Work or not, this is a good thing for "The Ring General," who desperately needs a reset after a topsy-turvy 2025. 3. Adam Pearce does a really great job in the on-screen GM role. He got some of the biggest pops on Monday night. 4. Whoever is running WWE's social media account must be a Tekken fan. I personally would have went the Mortal Kombat route and made a Kung Lao joke, but we're simpatico. 5. The Reed shoe thing is weird now. It was cool when he did it the first time and it inspired two awesome puns (Tribal Thief and Shoe-la Fala), but the loss to Reigns and Uso at SummerSlam takes away from it for me. 👑 A really strong showing for the "Raw after SummerSlam." I give this show a Crown score of: 9/10. 👑
