'Generali' sign atop insurer's skyscraper offices collapses in Milan

MILAN - One of the giant Generali signs that crown the Italian insurer's head offices in Milan collapsed on Monday, remaining atop the 170 metre-high (558 ft) skyscraper but at risk of crashing to the ground, firefighters said on Monday.
Generali, which is Italy's biggest insurer, said there were no injuries, adding that staff had been instructed to remain at home and work remotely.
"The situation has been promptly managed with the collapsed sign immediately secured without any damage to people or the surrounding structures," it said in a note.
"The possible causes of the accident are being assessed. Generali will continue to promptly provide all relevant updates," it added.
Firefighters said they were working with Generali personnel to prevent the sign from dislodging from the top of the building and plunging to the ground. The area has been cordoned off and the nearby metro station shut.
The Generali building, known as the Hadid Tower, is part of Milan's CityLife redevelopment project, which saw the construction of three iconic skyscrapers dubbed Le Tre Torri - "three towers" in Italian - on the grounds of the former trade fair.
Built between 2014 and 2017 and spanning 44 storeys, the Generali tower was designed by the late Iraqi-born British architect Zaha Hadid.
The other two towers, which house the Milan offices of German insurer Allianz and consultancy firm PwC respectively, were designed by architects Arata Isozaki and Daniel Libeskind.
The CityLife project also includes high-end apartment buildings surrounding the park where the three towers are located as well as a shopping centre.
Dozens of employees of the shopping centre queued outside the cordoned-off area waiting to see if they would be allowed in, according to a Reuters eyewitness. REUTERS

Hong Kong May retail sales increase 2.4%
[HONG KONG] Hong Kong's retail sales by value rose 2.4 per cent in May from a year earlier, the first increase in more than a year, government data showed on Wednesday (Jul 2). Sales increased to HK$31.3 billion (S$5.1 billion), the first expansion since February 2024. In April, retail sales fell 2.3 per cent compared with the same month a year before. In volume terms, May retail sales increased 1.9 per cent from a year earlier, compared with a revised 3.3 per cent decline in April. May visitor arrivals rose to 4.08 million, up 20 per cent from the same month a year ago, data from the Hong Kong Tourism Board showed. That compared with 3.85 million in April, 3.82 million in March and 3.67 million in February. The number of mainland Chinese visitors stood at 3.12 million in May, up 19 per cent from a year ago. That compares with 2.81 million in April, 2.75 million in March and 2.77 million in February. However, many visitors from mainland China are visiting only for a day and keeping a tight rein on spending. At the same time, local residents are spending more across the border, taking advantage of the Hong Kong US dollar's relative strength against the Chinese yuan. 'While the retail sector continues to adapt to the changes in consumption patterns, the government's proactive efforts in promoting tourism and mega events, in tandem with the increase in employment earnings and sustained steady growth of the mainland economy, will help bolster consumption sentiment and support the consumption market,' a spokesman for Hong Kong's government said. Sales of jewellery, watches, clocks and valuable gifts fell 3.2 per cent year on year in May after a 1.7 per cent drop in April. UK top court gives landmark ruling on ex-UBS banker's divorce case

REUTERS/Toby Melville/File Photo LONDON - The ex-wife of a former UBS executive on Wednesday lost an appeal against her divorce award at Britain's top court, in a ruling lawyers said could have implications for wealthy people who move assets to shield them from inheritance tax. Clive Standish, the Swiss bank's chief financial officer from 2004 until 2007, last year successfully challenged his ex-wife Anna Standish's original 45 million-pound ($62 million) award from what was then a 133 million-pound estate. The case turned on whether roughly 80 million pounds of investment funds Clive Standish transferred in 2017 into his then-wife's name, to be placed in trusts for their children, were matrimonial property. Matrimonial property is generally acquired during the marriage and courts take an equal division as the starting point upon divorce. London's High Court ruled the funds were matrimonial property and awarded Anna Standish 40% of them, but that decision was overturned by the Court of Appeal which gave her a 25 million-pound share of the estate. Anna Standish appealed to the UK Supreme Court, which unanimously rejected her case. Judge Andrew Burrows said that, aside from each spouse's contribution, the key issue was "how the parties have been dealing with the asset". The judge ruled the transfer of the funds into Anna Standish's name was to "save inheritance tax and was for the benefit of the children", making it non-matrimonial property. Clive Standish's lawyer Lucy Stewart-Gould from Stewarts said the ruling showed that "title alone is no determiner of how assets should be divided". Anna Standish's lawyers declined to comment. The case will now return to the High Court to decide if the 25 million-pound share will meet Anna Standish's reasonable needs. Lawyers say the ruling is especially significant for high-net-worth individuals where wealth has been transferred for tax or estate planning purposes. Britain has long been seen as a favourable jurisdiction by less wealthy partners and courts have regularly made awards running into the hundreds of millions of pounds. Will MacFarlane, from the law firm Kingsley Napley who was not involved in the case, said the decision removed "a conflict between IHT (inheritance tax) planning and wealth protection". Sarah Norman-Scott from Hodge Jones & Allen said the Supreme Court ruling "shows a clear steer towards wealth preservation", but added that the decision could impact any divorcing couple. REUTERS

The Dalai Lama said in an address to a religious conference on Wednesday that members of the trust should consult the various heads of Tibetan Buddhist traditions and other senior religious figures to "carry out the procedures of search and recognition in accordance with past tradition". In 2011, he said that he would leave "clear written instructions about this", but Rinpoche said on Wednesday that the Dalai Lama had not yet done so because he was in good health and had promised to live for many more years. The Dalai Lama will celebrate his 90th birthday on July 6. He told Reuters in December he could live until he is 110. ARE THERE OTHER DALAI LAMA NON-PROFITS? There is another Gaden Phodrang non-profit in the Swiss city of Zurich. It also carries out various projects on behalf of the Dalai Lama, is headed by the Dalai Lama and has his aides as its members. Its job is to "maintain and support the tradition and institution of the Dalai Lama with regard to the religious and spiritual duties of the Dalai Lama", it says on its website.
