Starbucks Japan's new Hot Frappuccino is almost too spicy to drink
Last week, Starbucks Japan made the surprise announcement that it would be releasing its first-ever spicy Frappuccino. The new beverage, called the 'Hot Honey Oriental Mango & Tea Frappuccino', landed in stores across the country on 6 June.
Our seasoned Starbucks expert K. Masami figured this would end up being like a lot of other spicy menu items at other big-name chains, in that it would be mild with a hint of heat to please a wide variety of palates. However, when she scrolled through social media, she was surprised to see it had gone viral online, with reviews describing it as torture, and people saying it was too spicy to drink. That only made it seem even more desirable to Masami, so she headed out to try it, and when she got there and found out she could request less or extra hot honey for free, she asked for a little extra.
▼ Masami ignored all the danger signs, so what happens next is entirely on her shoulders.
Even the barista tried to dissuade Masami from requesting extra, saying: 'Are you sure you want extra? It's spicy so we recommend just going with the regular amount first.' Masami was determined, though, saying 'I'd like to give it a try!'
Flashing her an awkward smile, the barista complied with Masami's request, but when they handed the drink to her, they reiterated their reservations, saying: 'It's spicy, like really spicy so please be careful when you drink it.'
The big 'Danger' sign on the cup made Masami a little nervous for what she'd gotten herself into, but the ominous vibe dissipated somewhat when she admired the beauty of the drink and its whipped cream topping.
The hot honey sauce was reddish-brown, disguising itself as sweet caramel, but when Masami took a curious sniff she could smell mango, with just a hint of chilli.
Feeling slightly more confident, Masami took a sip… and then immediately regretted it. This was more than just spicy, it was seriously painful, burning her throat in ways she'd never imagined possible with a beverage. All kinds of thoughts raced through her head, and as she wondered whether Starbucks had totally lost the plot, she took another sip, hoping for something different, but the distinct aroma and spiciness of chilli dominated the palate even more strongly. While the first sip had a faint taste of mango, it was nowhere to be tasted now, with the spiciness throttling her taste buds into a state of unconsciousness.
Masami had been hoping the honey might lessen the strength of the chilli but it only helped to coat her tongue and throat with a sticky heat. Masami had certainly gone a little too far with her request for a little extra, but by these standards, even the regular would be too much for anyone's taste buds to bear. It was bordering on dangerous, with Masami reckoning some people might even wind up with upset stomachs after finishing the drink.
Masami crossed all her fingers and toes for her stomach to hold up against the chilli, because even as a serious heat lover, this was off the scale.
While the drink is said to contain mango pulp, jasmine tea and soy milk, the sauce permeated the entire drink in such a way that all she could taste was chilli. It was one of the most confusing beverages Masami has ever tried in all her years of taste-testing the new releases, but in hindsight, it was also one of the most exciting.
So if you get your thrills through hot sauce, then you'll want to head on down to your nearest Starbucks while it's on the menu until 8 July. Sold in a Tall size only, priced at 761 yen (US$5.32) for takeout and 775 yen for dine-in, this is a unique beverage that'll be forever burned in your memory.
If you'd like to escape the heat you can opt for the regular Oriental Mango & Tea Frappuccino, which is also on the menu until 8 July.

Starbucks Japan releases new Shine Muscat grape drinks, but the Frappuccino isn't the star
A surprise newcomer steals the show as this summer's must-try beverage. Fruit has been plentiful at Starbucks this summer, with strawberries and mangoes keeping us refreshed throughout the season, but now it's time for a new crop to take centre stage, with a trio of Shine Muscat grape drinks called 'Three Summer Muscats'. On the menu from 9 July, we were one of the first in line to try the trio, and with Shine Muscat being a large and premium Japanese cultivar of grape, we had high expectations for all three of them. So how would they stack up? Let's start the taste test with the main attraction, the 'Grand Muscat Frappuccino'. ▼ This icy drink is available in a Tall size only, priced at 707 yen (US$4.82) for takeout or 720 yen for dine-in. With muscat juice in the base, and sauce with grape pulp and a jelly made with muscat puree in the mix, this Frappuccino is designed to tantalise the taste buds with juicy, fresh, succulent flavours. Elderflower is added as an accent, and although it comes with a whipped cream topping, Starbucks suggests ordering it without cream for a lighter, more refreshing taste. ▼ So that's how we ordered it. The cream-less Frappuccino has a beautiful light green hue, and when you take a sip, the sweet and tangy flavor of muscat fills your mouth in the most delicious way. The jelly pieces throughout also play a great role, giving each mouthful a pleasantly jiggly, fruit-like texture. The base and sauce are a perfect match, resulting in a finish that's so juicy you could drink it endlessly during the blazing hot days of summer. ▼ Next up, we have the 'Chillax Soda Muscat' (579 yen/590 yen takeout/dine-in for a Tall; 624 yen/635 yen for a Grande). This is the third flavour to be released in Starbucks' new 'Chillax Soda' series, which is based on the concept of 'aromatic sodas for a lighter mood'. Grape pulp jelly, muscat puree, soda water and a special green citrus-flavoured syrup are the ingredients here, with the jelly's sweetness being central to delivering a crisp, refreshing flavour. The simplicity of the beverage serves to bring out the muscat's sweetness, and the green citrus aromatics pair well with the muscat while the fizzy soda adds extra refreshment, creating a pleasantly chill drinking experience. ▼ Finally, we have the 'Muscat Earl Grey Frozen Tea' (678 yen takeout; 690 yen dine-in, Tall size only) Surprisingly, this is actually the most intriguing of the three, as it combines muscat-flavoured jelly and grape pulp sauce with the chain's popular 'Earl Grey Bouquet & Tea' tea latte, a milky, fragrant blend embellished with a vanilla-flavoured mousse topping. This topping is unique in itself, as it's lighter and smoother than whipped cream, allowing the stunning combination of Earl Grey and muscat to really shine. Unlike the Frappuccino, the ice content isn't as overpowering, so the refreshing Earl Grey takes centre stage, and with the jelly and sauce at the bottom of the cup, you can mix in as much or as little of it as you like to change the intensity of the fruit. With so many flavours and a texture somewhere between an iced drink and a Frappuccino, this is truly a new kind of beverage and it completely stole the show, standing out from its companions with an elevated, elegant deliciousness. If you're looking for a literal bite to eat alongside the new drinks, then we highly recommend the newly released 'Sugar Doughnut Balls' (370 yen), which add a touch of decadent sweetness to the Shine Muscat beverages. All of these newly released items are limited-time offerings for summer, with the chain saying they'll only be available while stocks last. If you want to indulge in just one, then we highly recommend trying the Muscat Earl Grey Frozen Tea, but every item is delicious and worth trying — just don't wait too long to try them before they disappear! Starbucks Japan adds a Shine Muscat Grape Frappuccino to the menu for a limited time
Three Muscateers showcase a special Japanese fruit in a trio of ways. Starbucks has gone totally fruity this summer, kicking off the season with strawberries before moving onto mangoes, and now, for its third installment, grapes. These are no ordinary grapes however, as they're Shine Muscat, a large, premium, yellow-green, seedless cultivar developed in Japan. Known for its distinctive aroma and sweet flavour, this grape is now stealing the show at Starbucks, with a release called 'Three Summer Muscats'. ▼ The first drink in the series is the 'Muscat Earl Grey Frozen Tea', available in a Tall size and priced at 678 yen (US$4.69) for takeout 690 yen for dine-in. Elegance is the keyword here, as Starbucks' popular Earl Grey Bouquet & Tea beverage is enveloped in the aromas of juicy muscat to provide a refreshing mouthfeel that instantly quenches your summer thirst. The rich aroma of Earl Grey, overlapped with citrus notes, is a beautiful counterpart to the soft vanilla-flavoured mousse topping, allowing you to savour the lingering aftertaste of an elegantly light tea beverage. ▼ The second drink is the 'Grand Muscat Frappuccino', also sold in a Tall size only, priced at 707 yen for takeout or 720 yen for dine-in. This drink has been carefully developed to deliver a juicy burst of fruit flavor and a fresh, succulent taste. The base uses delicate, refreshing muscat juice, combined with a sauce containing grape pulp and a muscat puree jelly for a unique, 'bouncy' texture. The focus on creating a fruit-like texture means you can enjoy the juicy sweetness of grapes in every sip, and elderflower aroma is added as an accent, resulting in a drink that displays both elegance and depth. This beverage delivers a refreshing sensation that makes you forget the midsummer heat, and the chain recommends ordering it without whipped cream for a cleaner, more refreshing taste that's pure bliss. ▼ The third drink is the 'Chillax Soda Muscat', available in a Tall size for 579 yen (takeout) or 590 yen (dine-in), or a Grande for 624 yen (takeout) or 635 yen (dine-in). 'Chillax Soda' is Starbucks' new beverage series based on the concept of 'aromatic sodas for a lighter mood'. This new flavour combines jelly made from juicy grape pulp and muscat puree with sparkling soda, and mixes it all up with Starbucks' special original green citrus-flavoured syrup, developed exclusively for the Chillax Soda series. Take a sip and the fruit's sweetness and elegant aroma will spread, lifting your spirits. Perfect for when you're tired from the heat or want to refresh your mood, this is the ideal drink for a chill summer day. This trio of drinks lets you choose between 'elegantly fragrant', 'juicy' and 'fizzy' experiences, and three moods of 'elegance', 'bliss' and 'chill' to match your vibe. Whichever one you choose is sure to provide you with some much-needed refreshment during the summer months, and they'll be on the menu from 9 July, while stocks last. Starbucks Japan blooms an Earl Grey Bouquet & Tea Frappuccino and latte for summer
Time to spill the tea on whether these drinks are worth trying. Sometimes it feels like Starbucks is releasing a new drink every week in Japan, and that's definitely the case right now. After trying the Oriental Mango & Tea Frappuccino, the Mango Au Lait and the Hot Honey Oriental Mango & Tea Frappuccino, all in the space of a few weeks, we thought things would quieten down at the chain, but little did we know there was yet another duo waiting for us around the corner. ▼ The Earl Grey Bouquet & Tea Frappuccino and the Earl Grey Bouquet & Tea Latte. Released on 18 June, we headed out to give these two a try, and when we arrived at the store we experienced a sense of déjà vu as we recalled trying a similar duo last year under the name Royal Earl Grey Bouquet. While those drinks were designed to look and taste like a bouquet of flowers, with lavender hues and flavours in the mix, this new release is slightly less royal, with a more simple focus on tea as the star. The base contains milk blended with vanilla syrup and a powdered Earl Grey tea blend featuring jasmine and chamomile. Up top is a swirl of whipped cream, drizzled with honey and sprinkled with a powder containing a blend of bergamot, lemon peel, and orange for a fragrant, fruity zing. ▼ Perfect for recharging during the rainy season. Taking a sip, we found that despite being tea-based, the drink has a mellow richness due to the generous use of milk. The Earl Grey flavour is prominent, but there's also a refreshing herbal quality that comes through from the blend of various teas. The honey syrup provides a gentle sweetness, creating a harmonious combination of flavours that's deliciously refreshing and smooth, and the more you mix in the whipped cream, the more the flavour profile changes, adding extra depth. ▼ We recommend starting the drink without mixing in the whipped cream, then stirring it in later for a change in taste. Impressed by the Frappuccino, we pulled up the latte version, which contains the same key ingredients but is available either hot or iced. We tried ours hot, which was a great choice as the warmth seemed to enhance the aroma of the Earl Grey blend. There's a complexity to these drinks that defies their simple appearance, and we're happy to say they're both definitely worth trying. Both are beautifully balanced, with just the right amount of milk to rein in the fragrance of the tea so you can sit back and enjoy their flavours whenever you need a relaxing break. In fact, they're so good we'd love to see them become mainstays on the menu, but alas, these are only limited-time offerings, with the Earl Grey Bouquet & Tea Latte on the menu from 520 yen (US$3.53) while stocks last, and the Earl Grey Bouquet & Tea Frappuccino priced from 668 yen, available only until 31 October.
