Tested at Fort Bragg, new military troop vehicle in production in North Carolina
RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — An evolved version of the iconic U.S. military's Jeep was tested in North Carolina at Fort Bragg and is now in production in North Carolina near Charlotte.
The 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg helped test and provide feedback as the vehicle was developed.
The item has a name that's much longer than 'Jeep' — the Infantry Squad Vehicle, which has now been in the field for a couple of years.
It's designed to quickly move up to nine soldiers and their gear over rough terrain — but not as a fighting vehicle because it has no armor, like a Jeep.
The U.S. Army says the ISV, officially the M1301, is transported easily by helicopters or other aircraft during air assault and airborne assault missions.
The first unit equipped with the ISV was the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg.
The ISV is made from the road-legal Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 midsize truck but has a doorless design, steel and aluminum body panels, and a rollover bar.
Initially, the U.S. Army awarded $214 million for just under 650 vehicles to GM Defense/Ricardo Defense in June 2020.
One key aspect of the vehicle is that 90 percent of the parts are commercial off-the-shelf items, which experts say cuts down on costs, stocking spare parts and time needed to fabricate parts.
The overall Amy requirement is for 2,593 ISVs, which are built in Mooresville by Hendrick Motorsports and then delivered to the military from a GM center about 20 miles away in Cabarrus County. The GM center, located in Concord, is a 75,000-square-foot facility that was built just for ISV production.
Of the total contract, 649 are planned for delivery by this year to 11 infantry brigade combat teams.
So far, foreign governments have shown an interest in the ISV, with Canada planning to buy 90 and possibly another 240, according to GM.
While the ISV is not armored, troops said its 5,000-pound light weight, low profile and speed are assets.
'When expecting an ambush, we used speed to blow through and return fire,' Pfc. Caden Wilhelm told military officials about testing at Fort Bragg.
The 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions used the ISV to help Hurricane Helene victims in western North Carolina last year.

New Stellantis CEO deals with more of the company's old problems
Stellantis (STLA) recently celebrated the start of a new chapter, but it looks like the international conglomerate will still have to clean up some issues from its past. Last week, June 23 was the first official day on the job for new Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa. Former CEO Carlos Tavares left the company late last year, leaving Filosa, who had headed Stellantis North America, waiting in the wings for the previous seven months. Related: Jeep, Dodge parent Stellantis doubles down on the US Under Tavares' leadership, Stellantis laid off American factory workers, shuffled its C-suite, and forced its U.S. brands to push products that American customers didn't like. While Filosa has promised to reinvigorate the American portion of the sprawling company's 14-brand portfolio, he clearly has work to do to win back American consumers, who have been leaving the company. Stellantis reported that total first-quarter 2025 U.S. sales decreased 12% year-over-year, despite a 16% increase in Ram brand sales and a 1% increase in Chrysler brand sales. Jeep brand sales saw a 2% increase. The company reported total sales of 293,225 vehicles in the first three months of the year. And its latest bit of news won't help turn things around. Image source: Laurent/Getty Images Chrysler issued a voluntary recall of 250,651 Pacifica and Voyager minivans model years 2022-2025. The vehicles' side curtain airbags may not hold enough pressure during deployment during certain types of crashes, limiting their usefulness. The issue is caused by improperly sealed seams, which Chrysler dealers will inspect and replace, if necessary, for free. Stellantis says it is unaware of any injuries related to the issue, but it still asked that owners heed the recall notice. One user in an online Chrysler Pacifica forum said that her dealer said the remedy was not yet available. Related: Jeep parent Stellantis explores shocking move for struggling brand An official Chrysler account responded to the user's comment, but she hasn't posted an update. Recalls are a recurring problem for Chrysler. Last year, the brand recalled more than 211,000 SUVs and pickup trucks due to a software malfunction that could disable the vehicles' electronic stability control systems. Chrysler also recalled 67,180 300s due to another side airbag issue that could cause the device to rupture. Stellantis has work to do if it wants to win back American consumers. The company reported a 14% year-over-year decline in revenue. Consolidated shipments fell 9% to 1.2 million, which the company blamed on lower North American production. Stellantis reported that total first-quarter U.S. sales decreased 12% year-over-year, despite a 16% increase in Ram brand sales and a 1% increase in Chrysler brand sales. Jeep brand sales saw a 2% increase. Despite being a partially U.S.-located brand, Stellantis imported 564,000 vehicles last year, well ahead of Ford's 420,000 imports. In his opening statements to his company and the world, Filosa made it clear that the days of Stellantis being faceless are over. He referred to Stellantis as "a global company with deep regional roots," and the plan going forward is to leverage its institutional knowledge in those regions. More on carmakers: Popular Ford newcomer overtakes Jeep in a key areaJeep, Dodge's parent, has no solution for this emerging problemGeneral Motors makes a $4 billion tariff move The company said that its "cumulative knowledge" of each region "is second to none." Filosa will continue as director of North America and work from Detroit, Michigan, emphasizing the importance of the American market to Stellantis' future. When Filosa was named the new head, it was clear that Stellantis was making a play for North America, but he doubled down on the strategy with his first official proclamations. Some Compact SUVs Are Posers. We Tell You Which Ones
Boasting woodsy, rugged names and rugged styling, it's easy to be lured into believing that any such compact SUV will serve you when venturing off-road. If all you're doing is trotting down a gravel path, heck, you can do that in a Toyota Camry. Scared of driving in the snow? Throw snow tires on it. However, for those who crave off-road ability in a compact package, the number of posers far outweighs those equipped with the extensive array of features and systems needed. Let's separate the posers from the real deal. Despite being 21 inches longer than the original Bronco, the 2025 Bronco Sport seems closer to the original than its larger, modern sibling. A turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four and an eight-speed automatic transmission provide 250 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. All-wheel drive, front tow hooks, underbody skid plates, a standard 18:1 crawl ratio, and a front camera are standard, as is a torque-vectoring rear differential and 7-mode Terrain Management System that alters the throttle, transmission, brake response, steering effort, and the all-wheel-drive system depending on mode. In addition, the Sasquatch Package, offered on Outer Banks and Badlands trims, adds revised steel bumpers, a front bull bar, rear recovery hooks, more ground clearance, and 29-inch all-terrain tires. The Badlands trim also comes with Bilstein rear dampers, while the Outer Banks gets a twin-clutch rear differential. Yes, it lacks a traditional transfer case with a low range, and it shares its platform with the Ford Escape, but it's no poser, with 8.8 inches of ground clearance and 7.4 inches of wheel travel. Added to the CR-V line-up for 2026, the first off-road variant of Honda's most popular vehicle disappoints. While Honda's first TrailSport model, the Passport TrailSport, added the sort of gear you'd expect, the CR-V must make do with off-road rubber, some software changes below 12 mph, TrailSport badging, modestly revised fascias, and hill descent control, which is unavailable on other CR-Vs. You also get exclusive Ash Green paint. But that's hardly enough to merit paying more. Just buy a cheaper CR-V trim and add your own off-road tires. Its 2.0-liter four-cylinder hybrid powertrain delivers 204 horsepower to all four wheels while delivering an EPA-rated 38 mpg, although premium fuel is recommended. While not a true boulder basher, its off-road rubber works wonders in snowier climes, and can be kept on year-round, making it ready for freakish weather any time. While far from the most refined compact SUV, the Jeep Compass Trailhawk does deliver the goods for trekking into the forest primeval. Powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and eight-speed automatic transmission, it generates 200 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. Jeep's Active Drive 4x4 system comes equipped on the Trailhawk with a lockable first gear 20:1 crawl mode. There are also selectable Auto, Snow, Sand/Mud, and Rock off-road driving modes, along with 8.5 inches of ground clearance, skid plates, red front and rear tow hooks, hill-descent control, 19 inches of water fording ability, and a 2,000-pound towing capacity. On the flip side, the Compass' eight-year-old design and handling aren't as refined as its competitors, but it does look like a Jeep Grand Cherokee that's been left in the dryer too long. For some, that and its abilities may be enough to seal the deal, but it's getting a full redesign for 2026, making it possible to snag a great deal on a 2025. This is another compact SUV that's all hat, no cattle. Oh sure, the 2025 Nissan Rogue Rock Creek Edition looks more roguish, with its unique gloss black front grille and front fascia, gloss black mirrors, tubular roof rack, 235/65R17 Falken Wild Peak all-terrain tires, water-repellent leatherette seats with red accent stitching, and piano black dashboard trim, but that's all. Its 8.2 inches of ground clearance is unchanged from other Rogue models, and the approach and departure angles are no different. Like the Honda, it at least has all-wheel drive, hill descent control, and an around-view monitor, making it easier to venture into fields of rocks and fauna. Power comes courtesy of a 1.5-liter Variable Compression Turbo three-cylinder engine and a continuously variable automatic transmission that produces 201 horsepower and 225 pound-feet of torque. While the engine is supposed to provide superior performance with excellent fuel economy, it seems to never be quite good enough at either, delivering an EPA-rated 29 mpg on regular unleaded. We prefer the honesty of other Rogue models, which don't promise what they can't deliver. You could buy a 2025 Subaru Forester Wilderness, but a revised rendition comes out for 2026, sporting 9.3 inches of ground clearance and greater suspension travel. It also wears wider 235R17 Yokohama Geolander All-Terrain footwear, boasts a higher 3,500-pound towing capacity, and gains a rear differential temperature sensor. It makes for a capable performer, with an approach angle of 23.5°, a ramp breakover of 21°, and a departure angle of 25.5°. Power comes from a horizontally-opposed 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and a continuously variable automatic transmission that has a shorter final drive ratio to enhance low-speed crawling. It's rated at a non-too-powerful 180 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. Nevertheless, it can hold 800 pounds on its roof while stationary and 176 pounds when moving. Yes, it gets a visual upgrade to denote its abilities, but it also receives functional ones, like underbody protection and bumper tow hook covers. Inside, the interior is sheathed in animal-free, water-resistant StarTex upholstery, and its X-Mode system comes with Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud driving modes. While not the hard-edged off-roader of its American competition, there's enough here to trundle into the unknown with some confidence. For the 2025 model year, Toyota discontinued the most off-road-capable RAV4 models, namely the RAV4 TRD Off-Road. This leaves the 2025 RAV4 Hybrid Woodland Edition. Unlike the TRD Off-Road, the Woodland has no skid plate, no rear driveline disconnect, no crawl control, no hill descent control, nor a multi-terrain select system with mud, sand, rock, dirt, and snow drive modes. What it does have is Falken WildPeak all-terrain tires on 18-inch wheels, a TRD-tuned off-road suspension, and electronic all-wheel drive. It's powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission that produces 219 horsepower and an EPA-rated combined fuel economy rating of 39 mpg. All RAV4 Hybrid Woodlands come with selectable Eco, EV, Sport, Normal, and Trail drive modes, with the latter working as a virtual limited slip differential, according to the automaker. Toyota once produced a true off-road worthy RAV4, but its discontinuation after 2024 proves that RAV4 owners want the fashion, not the function, of off-roading. What this comparison proves is that a number of SUV owners seem to like their car's image and the promise of capability, whether it actually has it or not. One suspects it's the SUV's packaging they appreciate: the high step-in height and riding position, the flexibility of carrying lots of people or cargo, and the ability to overcome freakish, unexpected changes in weather. But most compact SUVs don't deliver to the extent most buyers think, particularly Japanese ones. The last one that did, the 2024 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road, shown above, is now history. The reality is that if you need a capable off-roader, American-nameplate vehicles offer the capability you crave for true off-roading. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Throwback: Test-Driving The 2010 Camaro V6 And SS V8
Unless you've got a time machine set to 1973 and you're wearing Hai Karate aftershave, it's tough to properly test a car calling itself a 'Camaro.' Nashville, Tennessee, USA - July 13th, 2010: A 2010 newly designed red Chevrolet Camaro, with retro ... More design of the 1960s and 1970s But GM's ride is nostalgic in name only. I test-drove the V-6 version of this 5th-generation Pony car back and forth from Manhattan to the New Jersey shoreline over a week and found my own personal Mod Squad, 2010-style. A great car is a great car, in other words, no matter what year it appears. It was a total 'Jersey Shore' reality-show experience. I was Mr. 'How youse doin?' everywhere I went, driving barefoot and drawing compliments from other drivers, beachgoers, the cops and passerby and happily filling the car with people, sand, beach chairs, blankets and increasing amounts of garbage. I took it easy on the highway, knowing this was the lesser-powered trim and keeping an eye on both my miles per gallon and the law. Still, even with 6 horses, it was easily the grooviest chariot of my year, and the sticker starts at a ridiculously cheap $21,000, meaning you can buy a car to match each of your outfits if you so choose. When my SS V-8 test model arrived, I knew this was the superior trim as soon as I got behind the wheel, laid on the pedal and zipped around plodding minivans in the left lane on freeways and having a loud good time. Scottsdale, United States - November 3, 2011: A parked black 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS, the Camaro is ... More a popular muscle car from chevrolet especially the older models. The newer ones have a completely redesigned body style. A swift downshift from of any of the 6 gears produced instant warp speed, handling is surprisingly and pleasingly tight (in the V-8 model, less so in the V-6) and it makes a respectable 24 averaged combined city/highway miles per gallon. The V-8's exhaust note implies a pleasing raspberry for whoever you've just passed, and I actually felt people gave the Camaro a little more respect than some of the German and Italian exotics I've tested. For one thing, you know a guy in a $225,000 Lambo probably isn't going to get out of his car if you get into a beef. But a Camaro guy, smoking the tires and blasting thrash music---well, let's just say people gave me a more little leeway than they might've had I been rocking a Rolls dressed in a business suit. Wisely ditching the crappy, plastic design of the 4th generation Camaro I tested in 2001 which died a deserved death in 2002, GM started anew when building the Camaro, all except for its basic platform which it shares with the now-defunct but fierce Pontiac G8 sedan. The new Camaro's fierce-looking body comprises acres of metal, a front end that comes to a point as sharp as the back of Brian Setzer's pompadour, three needless but snappy trim lines forward of the rear quarter panels and a non-functioning hood scoop. Its windows are just a little too small, implying exclusivity but actually impeding vision, particularly through the windshield. The cockpit's snug, too - if you grew a holiday belly last year, get rid of it before buying this car and if you're much over 6 feet, bust a hole in the roof or get ready to slouch. I did manage to jam three musicians, one of 'em over 6'2 and well upwards of 200 pounds, into the cockpit for a photo shoot, and our brief close proximity prompted the big guy to say, 'We should smoke a cigarette after this.' Cockpit snugness was my only complaint, though, and I got used to the small windows. A convertible concept version of the car exists; at press time, rumors of a 2011 launch abound and were not confirmed or denied by GM reps at press time. The 2010 Camaro comes in five trims; LS, 1LT, 2LT, 1SS, and 2SS. The V6 is a 3.6-liter job producing 304 horsepower, and is available on the LS and LT trims. The SS versions get a 6-speed manual tranny with 426 horsepower---a huge leap---and a 6.2-liter V8, so you've got some major extra balls on the highway. Automatic SS trims get a 6.2-liter V8, but you sacrifice 25 horses. This trim also features GM's Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation. See? It's not just a frivolous guzzler after all. And, at a starting price of $30,995, the V-8 version won't deliver a smackdown to anyone's wallet, good news if you took a portfolio hit in the stock market plunge of '09. An RS Package for LT and SS models includes special trim and bi-xenon headlights, and on LT versions, 20-inch wheels. All Camaros are available with 21-inch wheels, though. Rear-obstacle detection is standard on the 2LT and 2SS models and optional on the 1LT. Other available goodies include a wireless cell-phone link, USB port, satellite radio, and remote engine start. The sound system is particularly rich and crisp and the iPod hookup makes listening a far cry from the 8-track experience some of us enjoyed in the 70s. You can also purchase a Transformers Special Edition package that includes trim inspired by the movie of the same name. This orange Transformers Chevrolet Camaro was spotted in a Wheaton Maryland parking lot at night. ... More The Transformers Camaro is based on the popular Transformers movie series. The Chevrolet Camaro is one of General Motors most popular muscle cars combining power with relative affordability. (Exact year unknown) The optional Brembo brakes with visible calipers are fierce, and though it took me a good day or two to trust the car despite its hefty 3900 pounds, once I got used to it, I wrangled this hunky machine over country roads, parkways and the streets of New York with full confidence and had a plain, simple, stupid weeklong ball. In a current world of automakers reeling from financial dents, recalls and other woes, the new Camaro brings back an element sorely missing from today's market - fun.
