Lord's Test: Jadeja's gallant fifty goes in vain as India slump to 22-run defeat

New Indian Express11 hours ago
LONDON: The sellout Lord's crowd thundered and bellowed every ball defended by the Indian tail and every single Ravindra Jadeja took. A riveting session of Test cricket was on. The first session belonged to England. Four wickets fell and India were reeling at 112 for eight. In came Jasprit Bumrah, known for his bowling exploits. India's hopes were almost shattered. Then the rearguard action began.
Jadeja was batting to steer India over that elusive victory target of 193 set by England on Sunday. No one would have thought the match would stretch beyond tea. But it did. In the end, Bumrah played 54 balls for five runs and later Mohammed Siraj played 30 balls and bridged the gap to just 22 runs. And just when hopes glistened and danced in the distance in the afternoon sun, Siraj got out. The two along with Jadeja batted for more than two-and-a-half hours. Lord's, the home of cricket, couldn't have asked for more.
Test cricket is all about winning sessions. One cannot stop striving for more until the match is over. A team cannot afford to lose the grip over a contest, no matter how dominant they have been, as one slip-up can cost them the match.
That reality must have hit the England camp hard on Monday even if they had finally won the match to take a 2-1 lead in the series. Ben Stokes and Co on the fifth and final day of the third Test at the Lord's Cricket Ground did exceedingly well to floor India in the morning session. Reeling at 112/8 and with two more sessions remaining, India was all but out of the match. They still needed 81 to cross the line with Ravindra Jadeja the only recognised batter at the crease.
The Saurashtra all-rounder, however, had different plans as he along with tail-enders Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj came up with stiff resistance to take the game to the last session. An unfortunate dismissal of Siraj ended the resistance as India fell short by 23 runs but Jadeja's heroics with valuable support from Siraj and Bumrah made sure they didn't go down without a fight.
The morning session was always going to be crucial when the India batters KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant took the field. With India still needing 135 to win, the most successful Indian pair on English soil in the longest format of the game had to see off the incisive spells from captain Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer, who replaced Brydon Carse, the home team's most successful bowler on the penultimate day, from the Pavilion End to join his captain.

Sourav Ganguly biopic starring Rajkummar Rao to go on floors in January 2026; actor reveals team needed more time to prep

Rajkummar Rao , who is currently basking in the success of his latest gangster drama 'Maalik', has given fans something else to look forward to. The talented actor recently revealed that the much-awaited biopic on cricket legend Sourav Ganguly, in which he plays the lead, will start filming next year. The actor's update comes as 'Maalik' continues to enjoy a positive run at the box office. With audiences appreciating his intense performance, Rao has now turned his attention towards prepping for his next big challenge, stepping into the shoes of one of Indian cricket 's most iconic captains. Filming pushed to next year Speaking to Mid-day, Rajkummar shared that the team has decided to delay the shoot to ensure every aspect of the film does justice to Ganguly's remarkable journey. The film, which is still untitled, was earlier expected to go on floors this year. However, considering the scale of preparation required, the makers have decided to commence filming in 2026. 'Everybody is taking a lot of care in recreating Dada's life for a theatrical experience. We have pushed the shooting to next year as we needed some time for the prep. It's a big responsibility to play one of our most iconic heroes in cricket," Rajkummar said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? They believe it deserves meticulous treatment, both for the subject's stature and for the expectations of millions of fans. Learning to bat left-handed For Rajkummar, preparing to portray Sourav Ganguly is no small feat. While he is comfortable playing cricket, embodying a natural left-handed batter like Ganguly poses a fresh challenge. 'While I know how to play cricket, being a left-handed batter is a different ball game altogether. The muscle memory is all about being a right-handed batter. So, I need some time to practise," the actor explained. Interestingly, Rajkummar also revealed he has not yet met Ganguly. 'I have deliberately not met Dada yet. I want to meet him when we fully get into prep mode," he added. Fans of both cinema and cricket will no doubt be eager to see how Rao transforms himself into 'Dada' on the big screen. 'It's a huge responsibility' Earlier, in a chat with NDTV, Rajkummar confirmed he would indeed be playing Sourav Ganguly in the film. Opening up about his excitement and nerves, he said, 'Now that Dada has already said it, let me also make it official – yes, I am playing him in his biopic. I am nervous… It's a huge responsibility, but it's going to be a lot of fun."

It was an error of judgement: Shubhman Gill on Rishabh Pant's match changing run out

London: Rishabh Pant getting run out in an attempt to help K L Rahul reach his hundred before lunch on day three of the Lord's Test was an "error of judgement" but it was not done keeping personal glory in mind, India captain Shubman Gill defended both the senior players after his team lost the third to media after the heartbreaking 22-run loss at Lord's, Gill called Pant's run out on 74 at the time turned out to be the turning point of the match as India were on course to take a healthy lead. Eventually, India were only able to match England's first innings score of 387.'We talk a lot about this keeping the team's interest ahead of personal milestones. But I think it was an error of judgment, rather than wanting to score 100 runs. I think he said it would be better if he scored 100 runs before the lunch. A batsman feels pressure at 99 runs." "But at the end of the day, I don't think it was personal and he got run out because of his personal milestone. It was an error of judgment. Rishabh made the call. KL Bhai was running at the danger. I would say it was an error of judgment. It can happen to any batsman.""Having said that, the most important moment for us was Rishabh's run out. At one point, we thought we could take the lead by 50 or 100 runs. We knew it wouldn't be easy to bat on Day 5. The more lead we get in the first innings, the better for us. It puts the other team on the backfoot as well,' said Gill. Gill lauds senior pro Jadeja and tailRavindra Jadeja (61 not out off 181) batted with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj for close to three hours to take the game deep after India slipped to 112 for eight chasing 193. Captain said it showed Jadeja's invaluableness to the side and the tail had made a conscious effort to hang around in the middle rather than throwing it away.'He is one of the most valuable players in India. The experience that he brings in, the skill set that he brings with his bowling, batting and fielding is very rare. And the kind of composure that he showed today, it was just tremendous to watch.""Batting with the lower order of the tail has been one of the things that we spoke about in the previous two matches. That our lower order hasn't been contributing as much. But I think the character and the courage that they showed was tremendous,' said field tension makes Test cricket more exciting The game was played in high intensity with both teams going at each other especially from end of day three onwards when India clapped for Zak Crawley in sarcasm with some choicest words as the England opener was deliberately delaying the proceedings to avoid facing Jasprit Bumrah. Gill is all for raising the spectacle of Test cricket.'You're giving everything. Mentally, physically, everything. There would be times where there would be a little bit of heat from both sides. But I think that's what makes it so exciting. That's what makes it more challenging.""At the end of the day, there's a lot of admiration within two teams. Both the teams try their best to be able to win a match and perform. There can be moments where there would be some kind of heat. You're in the moment. That's what makes it more exciting,' said he think at any point India had a chance after Jadeja and tail got stuck in? 'When Bumrah Bhai and Jaddu Bhai were batting, every 5 or 6 runs that we were scoring, we could see there was pressure coming on them. Every 5 or 6 runs. And that's all it was.""A small partnership of 30-40 runs could make such a huge difference. And we were quite optimistic when Siraj was batting that if we just go up to the second new ball and if we have 12 or 15 runs with the second new ball, you never know. A couple of boundaries here and there and then you're right back on the top,' he said.

Cricket Fraternity Reacts As India Fail To Clinch Win In 3rd Test vs England At Lord's

'Master Blaster' Sachin Tendulkar and several former cricketers hailed the troika of Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah for putting up a headstrong fight despite India enduring a 22-run heartbreak at Lord's on the final day of the third Test against England. After a dreadful batting collapse in the final hour of Day 4 and the opening phase of the final day, India fought till the last breath to keep hopes alive of salvaging a victory. In pursuit of a 193-run target on the Lord's surface that came alive in the final six sessions, India were reduced to 58/4 and then half buried in the ground, after tottering at 82/7. The chase appeared to be a lost cause, but Jadeja and Bumrah put on a stubborn stand to reignite India's hopes. The chants of "India, India" echoed throughout the Lord's despite the overwhelming presence of English spectators. At the end, the visitors' resistance eventually gave out and surrendered to a 22-run heartbreak loss. "So near, yet so far.... Jadeja, Bumrah, & Siraj fought all the way till the end. Well tried, Team India. England played well to keep the pressure on and produced the result they desired. Congratulations on a hard-fought win," Sachin wrote on X. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly, who took off his jersey and waved it in the Lord's balcony, 23 years ago in the NatWest Series final against England, felt it was a Test to be won. "What a test match .. India will leave Lords very disappointed .. they played so well all 3 test matches . But down 2-1 ..it was a test match to be won.. jadeja fought hard and showed 193 was not a big total ..@bcci @Teamindiacrick," Ganguly wrote on X. Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh sees the positive side of the result. He feels that even though India ended on the wrong side of the result, the five days of pulsating battle will be remembered for the fight that the team showed. "Not the result we wanted, but this match will be remembered for the fight we showed. @imjadeja and @mdsirajofficial stood tall in a pressure cooker situation! A performance that demands respect - not just for the skill, but for the mindset! On to the next one boys," Yuvraj wrote on X. Former India batter Wassim Jaffer was proud of the fight that India exhibited and wrote on X, "Heartbreaking finish but proud of the fight. Take a bow @imjadeja, what determination, what patience. What a Test match we've had. Congratulations @benstokes38 lion hearted effort from him with the ball." According to ex-India spinner Harbhajan Singh, it wasn't India's day and wrote on X, "Showed great commitment @imjadeja @Jaspritbumrah93 & @mdsirajofficial wasn't our day #INDvsENG @BCCI." Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan identified the turning point of the clash and wrote on X, "Fight shown by India but England was able to siege the crucial movements." The game was evenly poised after both teams returned on day three. India replied to England's 387 with the exact total. Many felt the contest was fated to end in a draw, but Lord's turf changed its nature, and the ramifications became much greater. India managed to bowl out England on 192, but captain Ben Stokes and tearaway Jofra Archer breathed fire to leave India threadbare. Jadeja faced 22 overs with Bumrah and then the next 13 overs with Siraj, but failed to turn his unbeaten 61 into a match-winning score, as India fell behind 2-1 in the series.
