Stars Of J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" Franchise And More Celebrities Have Signed An Open Letter Supporting Trans Rights

On April 17, the UK Supreme Court's judgment in For Women Scotland v The Scottish Ministers defined gender identity as based on biological sex at birth. The ruling and the guidance from the Equalities & Human Rights Commission intend to limit trans people's access to the single-sex facilities of their choice in workplaces, public areas, sports, schools, and public associations.
In a open letter started by development producer Sid Strickland and script editor Jack Casey, hundreds of UK industry professionals are standing in solidarity with the trans, non-binary, and intersex people who the Equality Act will impact.
"We the undersigned film and television professionals stand in solidarity with the trans, non-binary and intersex communities who have been impacted by the Supreme Court ruling on April 17," the letter states. "We wish to add our voices to the 2000+ signatories of the Open Letter from UK Writers to the Trans Community published last week and call upon members of our industry and cultural bodies to join us."
The letter explains that "The Supreme Court's ruling that, under the Equality Act, 'woman' is defined by biological sex, states that 'the concept of sex is binary, a person is either a woman or a man.' The names signed on the letter "believe the ruling undermines the lived reality and threatens the safety of trans, non-binary and intersex people living in the UK."
The letter added, "Film and television are powerful tools for empathy and education, and we believe passionately in the ability of the screen to change hearts and minds. This is our opportunity to be on the right side of history."
In just 24 hours, the letter had accumulated around 400 signatures from actors, writers, directors, editors, and executives from companies like New Pictures, Sister Pictures, Motive Pictures, and World Production, just to name a few. As of Friday, May 2, that number has grown dramatically.

As the open letter states, film and television are indeed "powerful tools for empathy and education," so it's reassuring to see so many industry professionals come together to stand in solidarity with people whose livelihoods are constantly in jeopardy.
Similarly, leading musicians have signed an open letter on behalf of the U.K. music industry to offer their solidarity to trans folk as well.
The letter, organized by musician Tom Rasmussen, publicist Tom Mehrtens, Kinndred Management's Martha Kinn, and Olly Alexander reads, 'the UK music industry is a vibrant, diverse landscape that thrives on creativity and inclusivity' that has 'long celebrated a multitude of voices and identities, and the music industry here in the UK is one of our most trailblazing and culturally vital assets — one which trans, intersex and non-binary people are woven into in every aspect of the industry, past, present and future.'
Charli XCX, Rina Sawayama, Jessie Ware, and Self Esteem are among the names who have signed this open letter.
I'm crossing my fingers that this list of names on the open letters to the film and television industry and the UK music industry continue to grow.

When will 'The Last of Us' Season 3 come out? HBO boss talks future of series
When will fans see the last of "The Last of Us"? In a recent interview with Variety, HBO and HBO Max content chair Casey Bloys confirmed the acclaimed series is aiming to debut its third season about two years from now. But Bloys said it has not been determined whether that will be the final season. "The series is definitely planned for 2027," Bloys told Variety. "(Creator) Craig (Mazin) is still working it out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season. It hasn't been decided yet, and I'm following Craig's lead on that." "The Last of Us" is an adaptation of the video game franchise of the same name, and its second season was based on the 2020 game "The Last of Us Part II." But because the second game is so lengthy and narratively complex, only about half of the story of "Part II" was included in Season 2, which centered on Ellie's (Bella Ramsey) quest for revenge against Abby (Kaitlyn Dever). Season 3 of "The Last of Us" will continue adapting "The Last of Us Part II." The plot is set to shift focus to Abby, who becomes the main protagonist in the second half of the game, with Ramsey likely to have a reduced role. 'The Last of Us' Season 3: Everything we know so far from the game Once the HBO series has finished telling the story of "The Last of Us Part II," the show is expected to end, as there is no third game in the franchise to use as source material. Mazin has also said that two more seasons may be required to adapt the remainder of the game. "Hopefully, we'll earn our keep enough to come back and finish it in a fourth. That's the most likely outcome." Ahead of Season 3, the series went through a significant shakeup behind the scenes. ‘As the World Turns' soap opera star Eileen Fulton dead at 91
Eileen Fulton, the beloved soap opera star best known for 'As the World Turns,' has passed away. She was 91. Fulton died on Monday, July 14, in her hometown of Asheville, N.C., following 'a period of declining health,' according to an obituary from Groce Funeral Home. Born Margaret Elizabeth McLarty in Asheville on September 13, 1933, Fulton's father worked as a Methodist minister, and her mother was a public school teacher. The Last of Us season 3 will 'definitely' arrive in 2027, HBO boss says – but I'm still terrified they'll stretch it out for another season

Season 3 will move forward with showrunner Craig Mazin. According to NME, HBO's Francesca Orci revealed that there had previously been conversations with Mazin that suggested the show could run anywhere between three and five seasons. But now, it seems there's a chance it could stop at season 3. HBO boss Casey Bloys told Variety: "The series is definitely planned for 2027. Craig is still working it out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season. It hasn't been decided yet, and I'm following Craig's lead on that." So right now, The Last of Us' long term future at HBO is unconfirmed, but we do know that season 3 is arriving at some point in 2027. The Last of Us' Neil Druckmann will not be back for season 3 There's been some big changes to The Last of Us since the first season. Most notably the departure of lead actor Pedro Pascal as well as co-creator Neil Druckmann, who has stepped back to focus on other projects. Druckmann is celebrated for his work on the original The Last of Us video games and helped to influence the adaptation. He previously spoke about The Last of Us show's timeline change and seemed positive about it, calling it "worthwhile", so he's definitely helped to make the series the best it can be. Speaking about Druckmann's departure, Bloys said to Variety: "It was fantastic to have Neil involved. A lot of people don't realize that Neil has a full time job creating video games and running Naughty Dog. "It's a really big job that he's got. So I understand why he needs to focus on that. But I believe he's given us a good blueprint with the show. And obviously Craig is a pro, so I think we'll be in excellent shape. I'm not worried at all." The Last of Us season 2 has a much lower audience score on Rotten Tomatoes than the first season, scoring 37% vs season 1's 86%, so it will be interesting to see if a continuation of the series beyond the games will land well with fans. Personally, I'd be okay if The Last of Us ended with season 3 because sometimes less is more.
