Red Sox Could Target Diamondbacks' Merrill Kelly
Red Sox Could Target Diamondbacks' Merrill Kelly originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Just like that, the Boston Red Sox are competitive again. A 10-game win streak has the Red Sox at 53-45 and well-positioned to make a second-half run at the postseason. This seemed like an improbable notion just a few weeks ago, but Boston is rolling and can look for improvements at the deadline. Advertisement The most glaring need is starting pitching. Hunter Dobbins suffered a torn ACL and will not return until next season. Tanner Houck, who has been a disaster when healthy, won't be back until after the All-Star break. Kutter Crawford is likely out until 2026. Nick Burdi and Liam Hendriks have been sidelined, too. According to Logan Mullen of NESN, Boston could go after Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Merrill Kelly, should the team take the seller's route at the end of the month. Kelly, 37 in October, is a pending free agent and does not necessarily suit the Red Sox's timeline. They have proven they are a good team, but will they go all-in this early into the Big Three era? Mandatory Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY SportsMark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports Perhaps a package of prospects such as LHP Connelly Early (No. 9) and LHP Payton Toll (No. 14) could get a Kelly deal done. At the right price, he is still a worthy investment and a significant upgrade over the current staff member, Walker Buehler. On the season, Kelly is 8-5 with a 3.34 ERA, a 3.47 FIP, and 113 strikeouts to 33 walks over 116 innings. Buehler is 6-6 with a 6.12 ERA, a 5.95 FIP, and 63 strikeouts to 35 walks over 78 innings. The Diamondbacks will have plenty of suitors should Kelly be made available, and while it could be a scary notion for Red Sox fans, he could be the piece that turns a good ball club into a great one. Can Jordan Spieth win the 2025 British Open? He's among the longshot picks from AI
It's a big week for Rory McIlroy as he makes his triumphant return to Northern Ireland this week at Royal Portrush, a course where he set the record at 16. Prior to the start of play, our friends at USA Today Sports sifted through five different artificial intelligence programs to see who might win the 2025 Open as well as some sleepers, and although Scottie Scheffler was the obvious pick of some, there were some other interesting selections. Here's more from USA Today: Open Championship picks: AI prediction for 2025 British Open winner All BetMGM odds, AI picks and AI comments were collected by USA TODAY Sports on Tuesday, July 15Expert MLB daily picks: Unique MLB betting insights only at USA TODAY "His ability to avoid big mistakes and stay in contention every week makes him a strong favorite, especially in a tournament where consistency is key. While Scheffler is American, his game translates well to links-style courses like Royal Portrush." "Rahm stands out as the best blend of major pedigree, recent form, and links suitability. His consistent top-15 finishes in 2025 majors, combined with a strong Portrush showing in 2019 (T11), suggest he's ready to contend." "McIlroy is the hometown favorite (he's from Northern Ireland), and ... he's got the length off the tee, great control, and the mental game to handle a tricky Open setup." "Scheffler's sustained, dominant form, combined with his exceptional ball-striking and adaptability, makes him the most formidable contender." "As the world's number one golfer, he's been on a tear, with a streak of 10 straight top-10 finishes, including three in the previous three major championships. His consistency and impressive form make him a strong contender."POWER RANKINGS: Ranking every golfer at 2025 Open Championship by odds British Open 2025 sleeper picks "A past Open winner and a favorite of some experts for his creativity on links courses." "Straka has a history of performing well at The Open Championship, notably finishing tied for second in 2023 at Royal Liverpool, just one shot behind champion Brian Harman. His ability to handle the unique demands of links courses—firm fairways, pot bunkers, and unpredictable weather — makes him a strong contender." "He's got the game for links golf — power off the tee, but also a deft touch around the greens. His short game is one of the most underrated, and he's shown that he can compete at the highest level. If the conditions at Royal Portrush get tricky with wind and rain, Lee has the creativity and calm to handle it." "Henley might not be among the very top tier of favorites, which contributes to his "sleeper" status, but his current form and the strengths in his game make him a serious contender at Royal Portrush. "This five-time major champion is being underestimated. He's shown incredible resilience in major tournaments, including a T12 finish at the U.S. Open and a T4 finish at Royal Portrush in 2019. ... While his current form might not be the strongest, he's proven time and time again that he can flip the switch on the biggest stages."

Yankees Announce Max Fried Change After Injury Setback
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The New York Yankees are emerging from the All-Star break with some real urgency to reboot their season. During a harsh stretch leading into the break, the Yankees gave up their lead in the American League East division and will have to contend with some significant needs in the infield and the bullpen with the trade deadline rapidly approaching. And the Yankees are looking to navigate the second half of the season with a new outlook for staff ace Max Fried as well. Since joining the team this past offseason and stepping in for the injured Gerrit Cole, Fried has been one of the best pitchers in baseball, with a 2.43 ERA across 20 starts so far. But after exiting his latest start early with a blister issue, the team has announced it will be changing the way it evaluates his health between starts moving forward. "You're paying close attention in more ways than one now," manager Aaron Boone said of monitoring Fried for the remainder of the season, per Pete Caldera of TAMPA, FLORIDA - MARCH 1: Max Fried #54 of the New York Yankees looks on in the dugout in the third inning during a spring training game against the Houston Astros at George M. (Photo by) More Sloter/Getty Despite some extensive history with injuries in Fried's nine-year career, the Yankees have pushed him to eat up the third-most innings of any player in the majors so far this season. Following his injury, Boone suggested Fried might still eclipse his career innings ceiling by the end of the year but that the team will be more cautious with his totals moving forward. "He's in the prime of his career and I think he's an athlete that can handle it," Boone said, according to Caldera. "That being said, you're extremely mindful of it." The decision to bring Fried in has looked like a great one, given the injuries to the rest of the Yankees' rotation. But now, dealing with his own setback, the southpaw will have to dial things back a bit to ensure he's healthy for the playoffs.
