KUCHING (Aug 2): Sarawak will be the first state in Malaysia to establish a dedicated Diversity, Equality, Equity and Inclusivity (D2EI) unit under the state Department of Women and Family, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
The unit, which adopts the D2EI theme of Sarawak's Women's Day 2025, embodies the state's commitment to a people-centred development approach that upholds fairness in diversity regardless of geography, gender, ethnicity, religion or ability.
At the Sarawak Women's Day 2025 celebration held at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex here today, Abang Johari said the state government intends to strengthen women's involvement in high-growth sectors.
'This includes support in the form of economic grants, digital entrepreneurship training and start-up assistance. We have grants from the government and the state holds some influence in Affin Bank as a major stakeholder.
'We have asked the bank to assist us in investment-related efforts, including lifelong learning opportunities. This will certainly empower women more comprehensively in line with the D2EI values,' he said.
He added the D2EI principles align with the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030, which also emphasises inclusivity, and believed these values could help raise household income and reduce poverty across the state over time.
Meanwhile, Minister for Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah said her ministry is working with key organisations including the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the 30% Club, and the Asian Women Leadership University College (AWLUC) to further strengthen the direction and implementation of the D2EI initiative.
In this regard, she said the ministry is seeking support and sponsorship from the Sarawak government to fund studies for selected individuals to pursue the Master of Arts in Leadership Development programme at AWLUC, which costs RM105,000 in total (RM35,000 per student for the entire duration).
Abang Johari approved the request, stating that the funding would be disbursed through Yayasan Sarawak.
Also present were deputy premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian; DUN Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar; Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah; and Sarawak State Secretary Dato Sri Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki. AFFLUENT SEGMENT FUELS STANDARD CHARTERED'S GROWTH

KUALA LUMPUR: In an era of shifting markets and rising complexity in wealth planning, Malaysia's affluent and emerging affluent are turning to partners with global insights and wealth expertise to future-proof their financial ambitions. Standard Chartered is doubling down on its affluent business and is strengthening its wealth proposition to help clients grow and protect their wealth. For the bank's Wealth and Retail Banking (WRB) business, the focus is on growing its three main segments – affluent, emerging affluent and small and medium enterprises (SME). Doubling down on affluent According to Harmander Mahal, Standard Chartered's head of WRB for Malaysia, the bank's business is fairly robust in all three segments. 'Within WRB Malaysia, our affluent business contributes the most, making up almost 45% of our total income. This is followed by the SME and emerging affluent segments. 'We aim to continue building on our strengths in affluent as we expect our overall WRB top line to nearly double in the next five to six years. We target to have almost 60% of that income come from affluent,' he told StarBiz recently. In Malaysia, Standard Chartered categorises its affluent clients under Priority Banking. These are clients who have an Asset Under Management (AUM) of above RM350,000. 'For us, SMEs range from businesses with a turnover of a couple of million ringgit up to RM400 million, maybe even more, depending on their profile. Within this segment, we provide support with their potential growth overseas, working capital and other banking needs.' Harmander: Malaysia continues to distinguish itself as a compelling destination for business and investment, underpinned by its stable fundamentals and conducive business environment.—GLENN GUAN/The Star Within the mass retail space, the bank is focused on supporting its emerging affluent clients progress in their wealth journey, essentially forming a pipeline of future affluent clients. This client segment typically consist of young professionals. 'We offer products and solutions designed to cater to clients across segments along our client continuum, growing with clients as they grow their wealth through different life stages. 'How this could look like, is that the client could start banking with us as a young professional with a very modest income, but through our support, they are able to progress through each of their life stage, as they get married, buy a house and more,' he explained. Positioned for greater growth Having worked extensively in the bank's WRB business in all 11 Asean and South Asia (ASA) markets, Harmander believes Malaysia is well-positioned to capitalise on shifting global investment flows, supported by its robust infrastructure, strategic location, and pro-business policies that continue to attract sustained foreign direct investments. 'I think Malaysia is at a crucial point and it's going to do really well as it progresses. While short-term fluctuations are inevitable, the broader trajectory remains highly encouraging. Malaysia continues to distinguish itself as a compelling destination for business and investment, underpinned by its stable fundamentals and conducive business environment,' Harmander said. He added the government has been very agile to capitalise on the opportunities arising from the global trade tensions and measures, such as the Johor Special Economic Zone, which is making good progress. 'All the policies and measures taken are going to present a plethora of opportunities for Malaysians and investors.' According to a Knight Frank report in 2024, the population of ultra-high net worth clients in Malaysia is expected to grow by 30-35% in the next five to six years. 'As wealth creation accelerates, we believe that it needs to be well managed, and we are in a strong position to help with that. 'Our long-standing presence in Malaysia for 150 years is a testament to our enduring commitment, trusted relationships, and deep understanding of the local market,' said Harmander. He said Malaysia is a key market for the bank, therefore the investment, in terms of products and platforms, has been quite significant. 'We run some of our best platforms in Malaysia,' Harmander told StarBiz. A leading international wealth manager Standard Chartered's advantage lies in both the trust that is built with clients across their wealth journey and its expertise in wealth solutions. This combination enables the bank to curate and offer innovative product propositions tailored to clients' unique needs. 'The advice provided by our advisory team has a high degree of governance and an international flavour to it. 'We don't take those things lightly. The other advantage we have, which is quite significant and unique vis-a-vis other banks, is that we have a distinctive international network. Our wealth operations and expertise extend across 25 markets with four wealth hubs in Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai and Jersey.' The four key wealth hubs are strategically located to capitalise on cross-border wealth flows and offer international wealth management solutions for affluent clients. 'This presence in the multiple markets gives us a great advantage as we see Malaysia becoming an attractive business and investment destination for expats,' said Harmander. Against the backdrop of international diaspora, coupled with Malaysia's investment story and its Malaysia My Second Home programme, he noted that Standard Chartered remains attuned to the diverse needs of global entrepreneurs, professionals and their families as they expand into Malaysia. 'As these clients grow their wealth across borders, our affluent continuum and vast international network work in tandem to guide them in navigating the path forward in an ever-changing world,' he said.

Properties, vehicles auctioned at carnival

Visitors looking at the property listings at the carnival. THE July Auction Carnival 2025 delivered an electrifying experience for both bidders and visitors, marking another milestone in Malaysia's growing auction scene. Held in conjunction with Ng Chan Mau & Co Sdn Bhd's (NCM Co) 38th anniversary at the NCM Co Auction Hall and Megan Avenue 2 Foyer at Megan Avenue 2 in Kuala Lumpur, the cultural themed carnival saw over 700 listings from 13 participating banks and a strong line-up of owner auction and Lapan Art entries. The event saw impressive digital engagement, recording over 220,000 visits to its auction property listings. This momentum led to tangible outcomes, with over 200 successful bids securing lots across property, automotive and art categories. This surge of interest translated into real results. A total of 120 properties were sold with a combined value of over RM40mil, while 79 vehicles were successfully auctioned off, contributing over RM1.6mil in sales. Buyers were able to secure deals while owners benefitted from competitive bidding that drove prices upwards. A standout example was a three-bedroom service apartment in Seri Kembangan Selangor, which attracted over 20 bidders, pushing the property from its reserve price of RM277,000 to a final sale price of RM352,000 – a 27% up bid. NCM Co director and auctioneer Low Chee Hian said the carnival achieved its goal to attract market attention and real-time competition and achieve fair market value. 'This is our third successful auction carnival and we will continue to make buying properties and car via public auction easy and bring good value for both owners and buyers.' Beyond the numbers, the carnival delivered memorable experiences. One of the highlights was a live performance of the Magunatip, or Sabah's traditional bamboo dance, which had the crowd on their feet, clapping and cheering in rhythm with the beat – a celebration of Malaysia's rich cultural heritage. There were also booths setup by banks for mortgage, credit cards, and personal and company loan applications. Registered bidders received exclusive welcome gifts, while some successful bidders walked away with household electrical prizes such as refrigerators, dishwashers, steam ovens, pressure cookers and steam irons. As part of ongoing efforts to make auctions more accessible, the art auction featured works from both local and international artists. The segment drew attention from seasoned collectors and curious first-time buyers, resulting in the sale of 11 art pieces with a total sales value exceeding RM30,000. Felda to consult PMD on RM100,000 allocation for land scheme villages

KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) will consult the Prime Minister's Department to determine the best approach for distributing the RM100,000 allocation to each village in its land schemes, as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday. Its chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the move aims to ensure the funds are distributed efficiently and achieve the government's objectives. "We will refer to PMD to establish the appropriate criteria for recipients to ensure that the assistance is properly utilised and achieves the intended goals," he said. He said the allocation would be tailored to the needs of individual villages, some of which have Land Scheme Working Committees (JKTR), cooperatives, or youth councils. Ahmad Shabery said this to reporters after launching the Felda Robo and Novate 2025 programme, themed 'Young Innovators, Global Future,' at the Mega 3D Carnival (MK3D) 2025 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec). Also present was Felda director-general Datuk Dr Suzana Idayu Wati Osman. Yesterday, Anwar announced the RM100,000 allocation for each village under Felda to fund development projects decided by the local residents. This initiative aligns with the Madani government's focus on consultation and empowering the people. Regarding the delisting of FGV Holdings Bhd (FGV) from Bursa Malaysia, Ahmad Shabery said it should not be viewed negatively. He said delisting will allow for a restructuring of the company without being constrained by the regulations governing public companies, ultimately enabling Felda to fully own FGV and run welfare activities for settlers more effectively. Anwar had earlier confirmed that Felda would have control over FGV's direction once the delisting process is completed, which will begin on August 28.
