Amitabh Kant resigns as G-20 Sherpa, thanks PM Modi for the opportunities

The Hindu16-06-2025
Amitabh Kant, who managed diverse assignments during his 45 years in government service, has resigned as the G-20 Sherpa.
Mr. Kant, a retired 1980-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Kerala cadre, was appointed as India's G-20 Sherpa in July 2022, months before India assumed the G-20 Presidency.
In a LinkedIn post titled 'My New Journey', Mr. Kant said, 'After 45 years of dedicated government service, I have made the decision to embrace new opportunities and move forward in life. I am incredibly thankful to the Prime Minister of India for accepting my resignation as G-20 Sherpa and for having given me the opportunity to drive a range of developmental initiatives and contribute to the growth, development, and progress of India.'
Mr. Kant, who was the face behind India's G-20 preparations, said leading multilateral negotiations as the country's Sherpa has been one of the most significant milestones in his career.
In 2023, Mr. Kant said India executed one of the most inclusive, ambitious, action-oriented, and decisive G-20 presidencies ever seen in the history of the forum.
'We achieved unanimous consensus on the New Delhi Leaders' Declaration, despite significant geopolitical challenges, managing to refocus the world's attention on critical developmental priorities such as digital public infrastructure, multilateral financial reform, climate finance, and women-led development,' he said.
He said India held G-20 meetings across every State and Union Territory, which contributed significantly to cooperative federalism by beautifying and upgrading cities, engaging local artists and craftsmen, and promoting local cuisines.
'We also successfully expanded the G-20's scope to include the African Union, fulfilling India's promise and commitment to global inclusivity and collaboration with the Global South,' he said.
Earlier, as CEO of NITI Aayog from 2016-2022, Mr. Kant said he had the privilege of being part of the transformative Aspirational Districts Programme, which uplifted 115 of India's most backward districts by improving socio-economic indicators and creating opportunities for millions of our citizens.
'During those 6+ years, NITI played a key role in pushing digital public infrastructure through policy, and helped lay the foundational groundwork for India's digital revolution,' he said, adding that through the production-linked incentive schemes to boost manufacturing and accelerate industrial growth, the Green Hydrogen Mission, advanced chemistry cells, and the Atal Innovation Mission, the Aayog played a key role in positioning India as a global leader in climate action, cutting-edge innovation, and sustainable enterprise.
Mr. Kant said his tenure as Secretary of the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, now called the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, was dedicated to reform and liberalisation, with focus on ease of doing business, and the Make in India and Startup India initiatives, which continue to act as a framework for India's thriving ecosystem of manufacturing.
Throughout his career, Mr. Kant said he has been guided by a strong sense of service to a place and its people.
'Kerala was the first home to my IAS career, and I drew deeply from its communities — initiating the 'God's Own Country' campaign, supporting the expansion of Calicut Airport, and working closely with the fishermen and women of Kerala,' the former NITI Aayog CEO said.
Mr. Kant said he took everything he learnt and poured it into policies at the Centre — 'Incredible India' was born during his time as Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Tourism because he saw what shining a light on India's diversity can do for the economy, ecology, and essence of a place.
'India has, and will always be, Incredible. In a small way, I have contributed to helping the world recognise that,' he said.
Mr. Kant also said he is incredibly grateful to Ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and S. Jaishankar for their inspiration, guidance, and trust.
'I now look forward to contributing to India's transformational journey towards Viksit Bharat by facilitating and supporting free enterprise, startups, think tanks, and academic institutions,' he said.

MoEF returning Andhra Pradesh's G-B proposal a huge victory for Telangana, says Uttam

HYDERABAD: Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Tuesday described the decision of the Expert Appraisal Committee of the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change to return a proposal by Andhra Pradesh on the Banakacherla link project as a 'huge victory for Telangana'. Uttam made a detailed PowerPoint presentation on 'The Water Issues of Telangana in Godavari and Krishna River Basins' at Praja Bhavan on Tuesday. During his presentation, he said that the Congress government will not compromise on Telangana's rightful share of waters in the Godavari and Krishna rivers. He said the previous BRS regime had mortgaged Telangana's interests and allowed Andhra Pradesh to push ahead with schemes like the Godavari-Banakacherla (G-B) link project because of its 'compromised approach'. The Irrigation minister further said that the Congress government cited multiple legal violations, including disregard for the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal (GWDT) award, which allocated flood and surplus waters among co-basin states. He pointed out that the Environmental Clearance (EC) for Polavaram was granted in 2005 for a different project scope, and any large-scale diversion like the G-B project would require fresh environmental assessment under EIA rules. 'We made it crystal clear — Telangana will not allow its hard-earned and historically legitimate rights to be usurped,' he said.

Telangana High Court issues notice to Rangareddy district collector in contempt case

HYDERABAD: Justice C V Bhasker Reddy of the Telangana High Court has issued notices to the Rangareddy District Collector in a contempt case filed by Birla Mallesh. The court directed the Collector to submit a report by July 11, 2025, regarding the alleged violation of a previous court order dated April 24, 2025, which stayed all transactions and alterations on over 26 acres of disputed government and Bhoodan land in Survey Numbers 180 and 182 of Nagaram village, Maheshwaram mandal. The petitioner alleged that, despite the court's stay order, the respondents continued illegal construction activity on the property. Photographic evidence submitted to the court reportedly shows ongoing compound wall construction at the site. Taking serious note of the alleged non-compliance, Justice Reddy directed the District Collector to investigate the matter immediately and report the current status of the land. The contempt proceedings stem from a broader writ petition filed by Birla Mallesh, who accused senior IAS and IPS officers from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh of colluding with revenue and registration officials to fraudulently transfer the land. The petitioner alleged that this was done using forged documents and manipulated revenue records. He claimed that his family had been cultivating the land peacefully for over five decades, but it was later falsely shown as part of Survey No. 194 to facilitate illegal transfers. Serious allegations were also made regarding the misuse of the Dharani digital land portal and the improper issuance of 13-B certificates to legitimize fraudulent transactions, commonly referred to as 'Saida Bainama.' The petitioner stated that despite filing multiple complaints since November 2024, authorities ignored the issue and instead harassed him with legal threats and defamation notices. Justice Reddy remarked that land meant for the poor was being usurped by the powerful, calling it 'a case of the fence eating the crop.'

Maharashtra to form panel to develop Asia's largest logistics hub in Bhiwandi

MUMBAI: Industries Minister Uday Samant on Tuesday said the largest logistics hub in Asia can be built in Bhiwandi, and announced in the Legislative Assembly that the state government will set up a committee to work toward this goal. Samant made the announcement in response to demands made by Bhiwandi East MLA Rais Shaikh. Samant said Shaikh will be part of the committee. Bhiwandi is already home to several large warehouses and logistics centres that serve top e-commerce giants. 'The government acknowledges the technical difficulties, such as appointing IAS officers in Bhiwandi and taking back the powers of MMRDA. Therefore, accepting the request of MLA Rais Shaikh, we will form a committee of four or five people, including officials from the industries and urban development departments. We will move forward after finalising the policy,' Samant said. 'There is a need to appoint an IAS officer for the Bhiwandi Surrounding Notified Area. The 60 villages and Bhiwandi city together cover an area of 144 square kilometres, which is 30% of Mumbai. All the powers of local bodies are currently with the authority. Government land worth Rs 3,000 crore is being encroached upon and needs to be protected. If the government is serious about this issue, Bhiwandi will have the biggest share in making the state's $1 trillion economy a reality,' Shaikh said. Shaikh also raised issues regarding the collapse of a building in Bhiwandi, which resulted in the death of a five-year-old child, as well as a nexus of officials involved in unauthorised constructions. He demanded an inquiry and strict action. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Doctor's Day 2025 , messages and quotes!
