Strong Junior Bok squad named for U-20 world champs in Italy

TimesLIVE10-06-2025

Junior Springboks head coach Kevin Foote has included five players who will feature in their second World Rugby U-20 Championship in Italy, with lock Riley Norton retained as captain for the tournament from June 29 to July 19.
Prop Phiwayinkosi Kubheka and flyhalf Ian van der Merwe have not played for the South Africa U-20s, while lock Jaco Grobbelaar, No 8 Stephanus Linde and outside back Jaco Williams are back in the squad after missing last month's U-20 Rugby Championship in Gqeberha.
Kubheka played for the SA U-18s last year and Van der Merwe in 2023, while Linde toured with the Junior Boks in Georgia earlier this year before he picked up an injury that ruled him out of the Rugby Championship. Grobbelaar and Williams were involved with the United Rugby Championship squads for the Bulls and Sharks.
Grobbelaar is one of the five players returning for a second World Rugby Championship stint, with utility forward Bathobele Hlekani, prop Herman Lubbe, loose forward Wandile Mlaba and scrumhalf Haashim Pead.

Rassie Erasmus introduces rugby's first ever 'hybrid player'

Innovative Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus called centre-turned-flanker Andre Esterhuizen a 'hybrid player' on Saturday after a 54-7 victory over the Barbarians in wet and cold Cape Town. Image: RODGER BOSCH / AFP When replacement back Andre Esterhuizen came on early in the second half of the non-cap exhibition match for the world champions, it was as a loose forward. 'You can call him a hybrid player – he is a backline player who can also play in the forwards now,' Erasmus told a press conference. 'You can have a forward covering a back position like (flanker) Kwagga Smith covering wing, and you can have a back covering a forward position, like Andre. 'We started chatting to Andre about it five months ago, now he is a backline player who can also play as a forward.' Former Springboks flanker Rassie Erasmus, who played key coaching roles in the 2019 and 2023 Rugby World Cup triumphs of South Africa, is a master innovator. He is best known for changing the traditional five forwards-three backs split on the substitutes' bench, choosing six-two and even seven-one combinations instead. Erasmus hailed lock Lood de Jager, back in the team after a two-year absence with a career-threatening heart illness and then injuries. 'The condition that he had was almost career ending, but when we did the fitness testing three weeks ago, he was exceptional,' said the coach. 'His body might be 32 or 33, but he has had some 'rest' in the last couple of years, and I think that showed. 'We are very glad Lood came through, and we have some nice depth at lock now,' said Erasmus, referring to eight locks in a 45-man squad for three July Tests against Italy and Georgia. After torrential rain during the eight-try victory over the Baabaas, Erasmus said he was hoping for dry weather when the record four-time Rugby World Cup title-holders face Italy on July 5. 'Some of the half gaps and some of the line breaks we made today would have stuck if the weather had been drier,' he said. 'We cannot wait to play on a dry pitch and improve our attack. We want to get better and in the next three matches we will be trying to focus on ourselves before the Rugby Championship. 'We know who is going to play in the two Tests against Italy, and certainly by the end of the Georgia game, which will be a grind, we will have a group that have had some game time. 'We will not get carried away with this performance, (but) some of the newer guys showed us that they can do it at this level,' added Rassie Erasmus. Democratic Republic of Congo-born flanker Vincent Tshituka from the Sharks, one of four debutants, scored two tries. South Africa face Italy in Pretoria, then in Gqeberha on July 12 before a one-off Test against Georgia in Mbombela on July 19. Two Rugby Championship fixtures each against Australia, New Zealand and Argentina follow between August and October. November Tests in France, Italy, Ireland and Wales complete the schedule for the Springboks, who will defend the World Cup in Australia in 2027. Springboks Player Ratings: Who FIRED, Who FLOPPED

The Springboks got their 2025 season off to the perfect start with a 54-7 win over the Barbarians on Saturday. The Springboks demolished the Barbarians 54-7 at the DHL Stadium on Saturday, 28 June 2025. Rassie Eramus and the Boks have plenty to celebrate following their resounding performance en route to claiming their thir successive Qatar Cup. These are the players who stood out as well as a couple of stars who were slightly underwhelming. Lood de Jager – 9/10 Lood hasn't missed a step despite not playing for the Springboks in almost two years. The lanky Bok lock made countlies huge carries, getting over the advantage line at ease. He was also astute defensively and a solid line-out option for the Springboks. Vincent Tshitshuka – 8.5 What a debut. The elusive Sharks flanker scored two tries to cap off a well-rounded performance in his first Springboks test. Tshitshuka agility and skills were on full display. Meanwhile, he was a solid third choice in the line-out. Kurt-Lee Arendse – 8 Welcome back, Arendse. The speedy and skilful Springboks winger reminded the Bulls and SA Rugby what we have been missing since he left for Japan. Arendse finished off a beautiful well-worked team try in the corner and was a constant threat with ball in hand. He beat defenders at will with his fleet-footed stepping and lightning speed. Cheslin Kolbe – 9 The 2024 SA Rugby Player of the Year reminded us all why he was given awarded this honour. Kolbe was one of the stand-out Boks. His try in the corner was just the start of what was another world class display from Kolbe. He was excellent in the air dominating the aerial battle in wet conditions. Kolbe was perfect defensively, putting in one solid hit after the other. He added memorable bounce off on Ricky Riccitelli in the second half and was a threat all afternoon. *Please note that these players did not pay badly at all. They were just not as exceptional as the rest of the pack in what was a comprehensive display and dominance Springboks performance. Jean Kleyn – 6/10 He did not do much wrong but he was certainly overshadowed by his Bok lock team mate, Lood. Kleyn struggled to get over the advantage line or to make dominant tackles. He was solid at line out time and did what he needed to but did not stand out. Morne van den Berg – 6.5/10 He provided quick delivery from the base of the ruck. However, he certainly did not knock the selection door down and was outplayed by his replacement, Cobus Reinach. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211.
