One person recalled how they went in once and 'took a look at the clientele, had a half pint and beat it as most had live scars on themselves'. Another person wrote: "I was in the Merchant Navy and have been in rough pubs all over the world, but the roughest pub I have ever been in my life was in my home town - The Gunner in Pennywell Road in the early 1980s." Many people defended the pub, saying it wasn't as bad as others claimed, but a tradesman who worked there in the 90s said: "We were never out of that pub fixing windows and mirrors after some ruckus. Steelers announce Ben Roethlisberger, Joey Porter, Maurkice Pouncey to join Hall of Honor
The Pittsburgh Steelers are honoring three core members of the organization this December. The team will induct quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, center Maurkice Pouncey and linebacker Joey Porter into the Steelers Hall of Honor as part of the Class of 2025. Roethlisberger, who was under center for the Steelers from 2004 to 2021, spent more than a decade as the face of the franchise. The six-time Pro Bowler led Pittsburgh to two Super Bowls, in 2006 and 2009. Roethlisberger will be inducted alongside Pouncey, his longtime center from 2010 to 2020. Porter, who played for the Steelers from 1999-2006, played with Roethlisberger for the team's Super Bowl XL win. The inductees will be celebrated with an on-field ceremony on Dec. 15, as Pittsburgh hosts the Miami Dolphins for Monday Night Football. Longtime Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, who coached both Roethlisberger and Pouncey, congratulated the trio in a video posted to social media, calling them "a small and really special group." "I can't wait to have you guys back," Tomlin said. "Well deserved." Porter's son, Joey Porter Jr., also took to social media to congratulate his father. Porter Jr., a cornerback, was selected by the Steelers in the 2023 draft, and has spent the past three years with the team. "Shout out to my dad for being a part of this year's class. It was an honor and a privilege to watch you play throughout your career, and see you put on for Steeler Nation," Porter Jr. said. "Thank you for showing me what it means to be a Steeler." The Steelers Hall of Honor, which was established in 2017, has honored players, coaches and contributors every year. Roethlisberger, Pouncey and Porter will join the 58 people who have already been inducted into the hall over the past eight years. In order to be recognized, former players must have been retired for at least three seasons and have to have played for the team for at least three seasons. (As a result, this is the first year that Roethlisberger could be honored.) Former coaches and contributors had to have made "significant contributions to the team and community." Three members of the Rooney family, who own the team, are in the Hall of Honor, including team founder Art Rooney Sr.

Over 600 malnourished children die in six months in Nigeria: MSF
More than 600 malnourished children have died in northern Nigeria in six months after failing to receive proper care as foreign aid dries up, a medical charity has said. Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said northern Nigeria, which already is struggling with insurgency and banditry, is "currently facing an alarming malnutrition crisis." In the first half of 2025, its teams treated nearly 70,000 children for malnutrition in Katsina state, nearly 10,000 of whom had to be hospitalised. During the same period, cases of nutritional oedema -- the most severe and deadly form of malnutrition among children -- jumped by 208 percent from the same period in 2024. "Unfortunately, 652 children have already died in our facilities since the beginning of 2025 due to a lack of timely access to care," the charity, which is known by its French initials, said in a statement released Friday. Huge cuts in foreign aid sparked by US President Donald Trump's decision to slash spending overseas have combined with spiking living costs and a surge in jihadist attacks to create a dire situation in northern Nigeria. Ahmed Aldikhari, MSF's country representative in Nigeria, said the cuts from the United States -- but also from Britain and European Union -- were hampering treatment and care for malnourished children. He said "the true scale of the crisis exceeds all predictions". An MSF survey of 750 mothers showed more than half of them were "acutely malnourished, including 13 percent with severe acute malnutrition". Katsina state nutrition officer Abdulhadi Abdulkadir, acknowledged the severity of malnutrition in the state, but said the numbers released by the medical charity might be "too high compared to reality" and had not been validated by his administration. - 'Serious cases of malnutrition' - "Yes, definitely there are deaths as a result of malnutrition," he told AFP, promising to provide official figures next week. The MSF figures cover the entire north of the country which includes more than a dozen states. Abdulkadir said the northern parts of his state, bordering Niger and straddling the semi desert Sahel region, have the most severe malnutrition because food production is limited by the harsh climate. Food production in the fertile south of the state is being hampered by criminal gangs called bandits who raid villages, making farming dangerous, he said. "This has aggravated the issue of malnutrition," he said. Criminal gangs have spread throughout the country, targeting rural areas with kidnappings for ransom. Katsina state government provided 500 million naira ($330, 000) towards nutrition programmes last and has doubled the amount this year, said Abdulkadir, the government official. Across the country of roughly 230 million people, a record nearly 31 million face acute hunger, according to David Stevenson, chief of the UN's food agency in Nigeria. The World Food Programme warned earlier this week it would be forced to suspend all emergency food and nutrition aid for 1.3 million people in northeast Nigeria at the end of July because of critical funding shortfalls. sn/gv
