
CDTPA plea to Railways on issuance of quick ticket booking
Highlighting the plight of current ticket booking passengers, the Association secretary V. Jeevakumar said that the ticket booking counter staff insist for current ticket booking through online payment methods during both peak and lean hours of traffic.
However, in districts like Thanjavur and other delta districts, commuters hail from rural areas and have yet to grasp the skill to operate the mobile applications quickly. Hence, on several occasions they were unable to catch the trains.
At the same time, the delay to complete the process during morning and evening peak hours has a cascading effect on the passengers standing in the line who were aware of operating such mobile applications, he claimed.
Such being the case, the Association called upon the Southern Railway to increase or earmark booking counters exclusively for cash booking during peak hours for the benefit of non-mobile application technology savvy commuters.
He also exhorted the Indian Railways, through the Southern Railway, to weed out the problems faced by the uses of the mobile application - Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) – in booking tickets at the eleventh hour, particularly those undertaking short distance travels.
At present, a mobile UTS user could not book unreserved ticket if he or she was 'in the vicinity' of the railway track which means the user was barred from using the application while in the station premises or even at a distance of 100 metres away from the railway track.
If the railway authorities claim that such restriction was imposed to avoid ticket-less travelling by the commuter until he reaches his or her destination, the apprehension of the railways that a commuter might cheat the organisation could very well be surmounted with the help of real-time technology to assess the exact location of the passenger, whether the person was moving on the track, at the time of attempting to book a ticket and comparing the time of booking with the schedule of trains available with the railways.
By including this verification process in the mobile application, the 'ticket-less travellers' could be discourage to embark on such travels, he added.

Pollachi MP seeks restoration of Coimbatore-Dindigul MEMU service utilising idle rake
Espousing the cause of the travelling public in Coimbatore, Podanur, Kinathukadavu, Pollachi, Udumalpet and Palani, Member of Parliament of Pollachi Constituency K. Eswarasamy has submitted a request to the Southern Railway seeking restoration of Coimbatore-Dindigul-Coimbatore MEMU Special (06106/ 06107). The special service that was operated during the Pongal festival season this year was helpful to farmers, pilgrims, students, business community and general public in about 100 towns and villages in the section. It was stopped citing crew shortage in Madurai Division. Restoration of the train will provide connectivity for passengers along the towns with stoppages in the section bound for Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kochi and other cities through utilisation of Coimbatore and Dindigul junctions. The MEMU rake that was used for the service was being kept idle at the Coimbatore Railway Junction from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. It could be utilised to restart the special service in the interests of several lakhs of passengers utilising the 14 stations in the section. It would increase revenue and track utilisation, Mr. Eswarasamy said.

Coimbatore Junction-Kannur Express to start from Podanur Junction on July 8 and 10
The Southern Railways has announced that the Coimbatore Junction - Kannur Express (Train no. 16608) will depart from Podanur Junction at the scheduled departure time of 2.03 p.m. on July 8 and 10. The train will be partially cancelled between Coimbatore Junction and Podanur. On July 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 25, 27, 29 and 31, the train will depart from Palakkad Junction at the scheduled departure time of 3.10 p.m. The train will be partially cancelled between Coimbatore Junction and Palakkad Junction, a Southern Railway press release said. The Alappuzha-Dhanbad Junction Express (Train no. 13352) will be diverted via Podanur Junction and Irugur, skipping stoppage at the Coimbatore Junction on July 8, 9, 15, 17, 19, 21, 24, 26 and 31. An additional stoppage will be provided at Podanur Junction with Coimbatore Junction timings (Arrival at 12.17 p.m. and departure at 12.20 p.m.), the press release said.

Madurai passengers face train diversions, partial cancellations
Chennai: Passengers travelling across Madurai division will face disruptions from July 1 to 20 as Southern Railway undertakes corridor engineering work, affecting multiple long-distance trains across Tamil Nadu. From July 3 to 15, the Coimbatore–Nagercoil Express (train no 16322) was short-terminated at Dindigul instead of continuing to Nagercoil. Likewise, the Tiruchchirappalli–Rameswaram Express (16849) did not run beyond Manamadurai on July 7-11 and July 14-15. Its return service (16850) will start from Manamadurai instead of the island terminus on these dates. Several major express trains were also diverted via alternative routes to bypass closed sections. The Mayiladuthurai–Sengottai Express (16847), running on July 6, 9, and 13, skipped Madurai and Dindigul, instead travelling through Trichy, Karaikkudi, and Virudhunagar.
