Asha Negi opens up about challenging role in Criminal Justice 4, breaking her ‘girl-next-door' image with it

Hindustan Times03-06-2025

The gripping legal crime drama Criminal Justice has returned with its fourth season, once again featuring Pankaj Tripathi in his acclaimed role as lawyer Madhav Mishra. This time, the story revolves around a complex murder case within a troubled family, presenting three conflicting versions of the truth. Joining the cast are Zeeshan Ayyub, Surveen Chawla and Asha Negi, each playing pivotal roles in this intense and emotionally layered narrative. In an exclusive conversation with Hindustan Times, Asha Negi spoke about being a part of the hit franchise. She plays Roshni Saluja, Zeeshan's girlfriend, who is murdered. Asha opened up about her limited screen time in the series and why she chose to take on the role despite that.
Asha revealed that it was the story and the nature of her character that drew her in, 'because for the longest time people have seen me play the girl next door and those kind of roles. And I really want to experiment and do something different. When this show came to me, we all know it's a great show, the character, even though the screen time is less, it has so much to do. It has a lot of layers, and it was very challenging to play this.'

She described the most demanding aspects of bringing Roshni to life and said, 'Most of the days were quite challenging because when you're working opposite actors like Zeeshan Ayub. I had so many scenes with him and he's such a fantastic actor. So when you have scenes with somebody like him, you have to buckle up and bring your A-game, right? You can't just do anything and get away with it. So most of the days were quite challenging and most of the scenes that I did were challenging, which is amazing because it also helps you push as an actor and helps you learn and grow so much.'
Asha admitted she had initial doubts about accepting the role, 'I was sceptical that my character dies eventually, toh kya hi hoga iska (what will happen to her) but then I was told to read the screenplay and character brief and I was like maybe yeah, screen-time is less but there are times when the character is very impactful. So it's one of the most beautifully written characters. It was also so challenging, I felt like I didn't know if I'd be able to do this or not, it seems difficult to me. But whatever I had, I gave it my all.'
She also shared that nervousness is a part of every project she does and added, 'I am always nervous before starting a project. I get sleepless nights when I am about to start a new project. So, even this time, I was nervous. But it was so fun, you also see your growth and how much you learnt.'
Criminal Justice 4: A Family Matter premiered on JioHotstar on May 29. However, only three episodes have been released so far, leaving many fans disappointed. Directed by Rohan Sippy and produced by Applause Entertainment in association with BBC Studios India, new episodes of the show will drop every Thursday.

Reformed OTT Release Date: When and where to watch Elsa Guedj & Éric Elmosnino's French dramedy

Reformed OTT Release Date: If you're in the mood for something meaningful but also a little quirky, Reformed might just be your next binge. This French dramedy, which has quietly made waves in Europe, is finally coming to Indian screens. It drops on JioHotstar from July 9, and honestly, it's a breath of fresh air compared to most of the overdone dramas we see on OTT these days. What is Reformed all about? At the centre of Reformed is Léa, a young woman in her late 20s who's just become a rabbi, yes, a female rabbi in modern-day France. That's already a big deal, but the show doesn't turn her into some perfect, polished saint. She's awkward, unsure, sometimes funny without trying to be, and constantly juggling her duties at the synagogue with her own personal mess- like living with her grumpy atheist dad, or helping people with birth, death, grief, love, and everything in between. The actress playing Léa, Elsa Guedj, is outstanding. In fact, her performance was so good, she won Best Actress at this year's Séries Mania Festival, one of Europe's top TV festivals. The show is loosely based on the life and book of Delphine Horvilleur, who's actually one of the few female rabbis in France. So there's a real-life connection here, which adds to how grounded everything feels. More about Reformed The creators, Noé Debré and Benjamin Charbit, didn't go the preachy route. They've told a very human story that just happens to take place in a Jewish community. Each episode is about 30 minutes, and it gives you real, everyday dilemmas. There's one episode about a boy's circumcision that stirs debate in the community. Another about a terminally ill woman who wants to be cremated, which isn't exactly accepted in Jewish tradition. Reformed's supporting cast includes Éric Elmosnino, Manu Payet, Noémie Lvovsky, Solal Bouloudnine, Anouk Grinberg, Suzy Bemba and Lionel Dray among others.

Nagesh Kukunoor on SIT and LTTE in The Hunt: Ensured I humanised both sides

Adding a high-profile political thriller to Sony LIV's (OTTplay Premium) lineup is the release of The Hunt: The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case on July 4, 2025. The 90-day investigation that followed the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in May 1991 is dramatised in the limited series, which is produced by Applause Entertainment and Kukunoor Movies. Nagesh Kukunoor and a still from The Hunt Stream Nagesh Kukunoor's acclaimed films like Iqbal, Dor, 8 x 10 Tasveer, and Mod now on OTTplay Premium for a dose of heartfelt storytelling and unique narratives. Ninety Days is the first-person account of the manhunt written by investigative journalist Anairudhya Mitra, from which the show is adapted. In one story, SIT commander D.R. Kaarthikeyan is played by Amit Sial, while the other characters include investigators Sahil Vaid, Bagavathi Perumal, Danish Iqbal, and Girish Sharma. A parallel tale follows LTTE operators on the run. Nagesh Kukunoor's approach Before the release, writer-director Nagesh Kukunoor told us that he began by trying to put aside any preconceived ideas about the characters. The filmmaker explained, 'My approach was simple, and it's something that I've used all my life, which is, no matter which character I write, fictional or, in this case, clearly someone who existed and/or who is living right now, I always humanise them. It's as simple as that; that's the only approach I have.' He further shared that he treats every aspect of the narrative with the utmost fairness. He stated, "So when I come at it, it's with as objective a view as I can from an outsider's point of view… I just made sure that I humanised both sides and presented it as it was." Kukunoor describes the real‑world investigation—still the largest manhunt in Indian history—as a sequence of 'layers and ups and downs' that needed no extra embellishment. No commentary on contemporary politics Questions of public trauma and intelligence lapses are also touched on in the show. But Kukunoor held back from making connections to modern politics. The filmmaker revealed, 'No, I chose to completely stay away from that… anything that one tries to make a larger commentary on is open to controversy and sensationalising in today's times. So I was very clear that I would stick to the Ninety Days, the way they played out, and leave it at that.' He pointed out that viewers sought out real-life analogies even in his earlier fictional works, like City of Dreams. Thus, Kukunoor shared, 'When it came to real material, we made sure that we stuck to only the facts and not any kind of things that really do echo the current times… It was just sticking to the events the way they unfolded.' The Hunt intends to offer a condensed, fact-based reconstruction instead of offering commentary, thanks to its simultaneous emphasis on the Special Investigation Team's meticulous procedural work and the fugitives' flight. Sony LIV will drop all episodes beginning July 4, 2025.
