In 2009, a romantic drama emerged that would redefine contemporary love stories in Bollywood. This film, directed by master of storytelling, Imtiaz Ali, featured a narrative that oscillated between two eras, exploring complexities of modern relationships mix-matched with traditional romance. Despite its eventual success, the casting process was fraught with unexpected changes, leading to a lineup that wasn't initially envisioned. Which film is this?
The film we are talking about is cult classic, Love Aaj Kal, starring Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone. Interestingly, Deepika wasn't the first choice for the role of Meera Pandit. Imtiaz Ali had initially approached Kareena Kapoor for the part, but she declined due to scheduling conflicts. Did Saif Ali Khan wanted Kareena Kapoor to play role of Meera?
Saif had a desire for Kareena Kapoor Khan to star alongside him, yet Imtiaz preferred Deepika, and ultimately, they proceeded with Imtiaz's selection. In a throwback interview, Saif stated, 'I believe she (Kareena) was very eager to collaborate with Imtiaz Ali once more, and I think he assured her that she would be in his upcoming film.' How Giselli Monteiro entered Love Aaj Kal?
Similarly, the role of Harleen Kaur was originally intended for actress Sushmita Sen, but after extensive auditions, Brazilian model Giselli Monteiro was cast. Giselli had come to Mumbai in 2008 and auditioned for the role of Jo, Jai's girlfriend in the second half of the film. However, on the suggestion of Imtiaz Ali's ex-wife, Preety Ali that she should be cast as Harleen, especially since he had not been able to find a suitable actress for that role despite auditioning girls from all over India. What was the storyline?
Love Aaj Kal weaves two parallel love stories: one set in the present day, featuring Jai (Saif Ali Khan) and Meera (Deepika Padukone), and another from the past, showcasing the romance between Veer Singh (also Saif Ali Khan) and Harleen Kaur (Giselli Monteiro). The film delves into the evolving nature of love, commitment, and the choices individuals make in pursuit of happiness.
The supporting cast includes Rishi Kapoor as the older Veer Singh, Neetu Singh in a special appearance as the older Harleen and Rahul Khanna as Vikram Joshi who essayed the role of Meera's husband in the film. How was the box office reception?
Love Aaj Kal was made on budget of Rs 35 crore and was released on 31 July 2009, that turned out to be commercial success. It grossed approximately Rs 120 crore worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of the year.

Vivek Agnihotri breaks silence on multiple FIRs filed against The Bengal Files: 'They are challenging our guts, courage'

Filmmaker Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri is facing mounting legal heat ahead of the release of his upcoming film 'The Bengal Files'. In a video statement, Agnihotri revealed that multiple FIRs have been filed against him and the film by members of the ruling party in West Bengal. Despite the pressure, he remains defiant and plans to launch the trailer in the state itself. 'The ruling party of West Bengal and their members have been filing so many FIRs against us in different cities. That is their strategy. I was quiet and did not share this information with anyone because we were taking the legal course. I have great faith in Indian judiciaries, especially Calcutta High Court,' he said. 'The Calcutta High Court has given us a stay on all these FIRs, but as the case was being heard in the High Court, at the same time, they filed more FIRs. The ruling party wants to trap us with so many legal hassles and battles so that we cannot focus on the promotion of the film. This strategy has been deployed by them for a very long time.' Agnihotri also detailed the challenges of making the film. 'I must tell you it's one of the most defining and important films. It uncovers many dark chapters of our history.' He added, 'I have finished the film. It has taken a lot from us. We have put in whatever we had to make this very difficult film. We were not allowed to shoot in Bengal. We had to shoot the entire film in Bombay. Now, with our limited resource, we want this film to reach every citizen of India.' He concluded the video by saying, 'This is people's film. It is your film. I want you to support us. I want you to expose all those agencies and powers who do not want this film to come out. They are challenging our guts and courage. They want to see how we are going to fight. We are alone while they have the state power. But I have taken this challenge and I am going to release the trailer of the film in West Bengal. Nobody can silence me because nobody can silence the truth.' The Bengal Files, originally titled 'The Delhi Files: The Bengal Chapter', is an upcoming Hindi-language film directed by Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri. It serves as the third and final instalment in Agnihotri's 'Files Trilogy' on modern Indian history, following 'The Tashkent Files' (2019) and 'The Kashmir Files' (2022). The film focuses on the 1946 Great Calcutta Killings. The project is set to be released in two parts. The first instalment, titled 'The Bengal Files: Right to Life', is slated to hit theatres on September 5, 2025, coinciding with Teachers' Day in India. Set against the backdrop of the 1940s, the film delves into the violence that engulfed undivided Bengal, spotlighting pivotal events such as Direct Action Day in 1946 and the Noakhali riots.

Jaipur also fared decently with 30.5% overall occupancy. Mumbai and Pune posted average numbers at 22% and 21.5% respectively, while Bengaluru and Lucknow hovered around the 17–24% range. On the other hand, cities like Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and Surat showed weak response with single-digit occupancy levels. Chandigarh and Bhopal also registered subdued interest. About Dhadak 2 Dhadak 2 is a romantic drama starring Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri. It is directed by Shazia Iqbal and produced by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions. Whether word-of-mouth can turn things around remains to be seen as the film heads into its second weekend.
