‘I just gave it full tilt': Pierce Brosnan responds to criticism of ‘MobLand' accent

The Navan man plays Irish mobster Conrad Harrigan in the Paramount+ series, which follows the Harrigan crime family and their battle with the Stevenson family in London, but he has faced backlash for his accent in the role.
The Irish Independent's review of the series said Brosnan's speaking voice as Conrad was 'all over the shop and a huge distraction'.
In response to criticism, Brosnan told Radio Times: 'My own accent is very soft, Conrad's accent is a million miles away from me.'
He went on to explain that the inspiration for the accent was a man suggested by his dialect coach, adding: 'I told him that I needed a Kerry accent, so he gave me the name of a man and I googled the guy and that was it.
'It was a Kerry accent and so, I just gave it full tilt.'
In the interview, Brosnan (72) also spoke of the mix of worry and excitement he faces when taking on new acting roles.
The 72-year-old said: 'Every job is a challenge and it all comes with a thump of anxiety, because you have to do something.
'What are you doing on the stage? Why are you there? So that's constant. You live with that. You live with that stress all the time, and that's what's so exhilarating.
'That's what makes you alive.'
Brosnan is soon to be seen in cinemas in a new film shot in Donegal called Four Letters of Love, which is based on the international bestselling novel of the same name by Niall Williams.
Released on July 18, Brosnan stars alongside Gabriel Byrne and Helena Bonham Carter in the film, which was shot on location in both Donegal and Antrim.

The original novel was translated into more than 30 languages after it was published in 1997 before being adapted for the screen.
Brosnan is best known for playing James Bond from 1995 to 2002, starring as 007 in four films: GoldenEye (1995), Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), The World Is Not Enough (1999), and Die Another Day (2002).
He has also starred in Mamma Mia! (2008), Mars Attacks! (1996) and Mrs Doubtfire (1994).
Brosnan will appear in a film adaptation of Richard Osman's The Thursday Murder Club book, which is set for release in August.

"We certainly had kitchen table dramas, three men arguing a lot because the woman of the house was gone. "And I remember my relationship with food changed - really changed. I saw it as fuel, I took no pleasure in it. "After Iris died, 10 Cedarwood Road stopped being a home, it was just a house. Most days I'd return holding a tin of meat, a tin of beans and a packet of Cadbury's Smash [instant mashed potato]." read more on the irish sun The 65-year-old admitted that he would spend his food money on "far more important things" such as Alice Cooper's record and that food became just "fuel" for him. Julia Roberts looks set to give fans all-star performance in new psychological thriller

The trailer has been released for award-winning director Luca Guadagnino's next psychological thriller starring Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield and Ayo Edebiri. The film, entitled After The Hunt, centres around a college professor who finds herself at a 'personal and professional crossroads' when a star student levels an accusation against one of her colleagues, while a dark secret from her past threatens to come to light. Call Me by Your Name star Michael Stuhlbarg and American Psycho's Chloë Sevigny are also included in the star-studded cast. Andrew Garfield looks intense in the After The Hunt trailer. Pic: Sony Pictures The trailer kicks off with Ayo's character, the star student Maggie, seemingly invited to an after-hours gathering with her professors and other select students. She has a back and forth debate with the professor named Hank, played by Andrew Garfield, about the views that different generations have on 'offending' people, with Hank questioning when younger people made it a 'cardinal sin' and why they are afraid to 'say the wrong thing'. Maggie hits back with: 'Maybe it was around the same time your generation started making sweeping generalisations about ours.' The trailer takes a dark turn when Maggie skips her favourite professor's (Julia Roberts') class and waits for her at what appears to be the home she shares with Michael's character. Ayo Edebiri already has a huge Irish following. Pic: Sony Pictures Maggie, looking dishevelled and incredibly uneasy, tells her with a shaky voice that Hank 'crossed the line' after walking her home. Tension further rises when Maggie brings up her professor's 'history' as the focus shifts to Julia's character's mysterious backstory. What follows is a series of scenes that establish Julia's position as the centre of conflict between students and professors, hearing stories from both sides and seemingly weighed down by a fast-approaching dilemma that will affect both her personal and professional relationships. Michael Stuhlbarg is another strong addition to the After The Hunt cast. Pic: Sony Pictures Julia ends the trailer in suspense as she whispers to Maggie: 'Not everything is supposed to make you feel comfortable.' Luca Guadagnino has consistently delighted fans in the past with his films, such as Call Me by Your Name in 2017 and Challengers in 2024. The Italian director will be hoping this latest thriller could earn him a second Oscar nomination for Best Picture, with his first coming in 2018 for the aforementioned drama starring Timotheé Chalamet. Julia Roberts looks set for a big performance. Pic: Sony Pictures Meanwhile, Ayo Edebiri is a popular figure among Irish fans who have a long-running joke that she is one of our own, despite her having no technical heritage from the island. Since using an Irish accent in an interview where she joked that she played Jenny the donkey in The Banshees of Inisherin, Ayo was labelled an 'honorary Irish person' across social media and the gag has continued over the past couple of years. Now, she looks set to shine as bright as both Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield in what could be three of the most gripping performances of 2025. After The Hunt, written by Nora Garrett, will arrive in cinemas this October.
