KKR Strikes Back: $5.6 Billion Bid Could Flip the Script on London's M&A Drought

KKR (NYSE:KKR) is swinging hard again. After a streak of misses in the UK, the U.S. private equity giant just put 4.1 billion ($5.6 billion) on the table to acquire Spectris Plcthe British precision testing equipment company. That's a 96.3% premium to Spectris' share price before buyout rumors hit in early June. And this time, KKR isn't just offering cash. It's offering equity ownership to Spectris employees, a move that might tip the scales in its favor. The board, which previously turned down a conditional KKR proposal, is now on board. But this could still turn into a bidding warAdvent, the original suitor, hasn't made its final move. Warning! GuruFocus has detected 8 Warning Signs with KKR. It's been a frustrating run for KKR in the UK. In May, it pulled out of talks to acquire analytics firm GlobalData. Then in June, it lost out on Assura Plc after the board sided with Primary Health Properties, a strategic player. Even outside of listed companies, KKR backed away from investing 4 billion in Thames Water following extended due diligence. And yet, the firm isn't slowing down. A spokesperson noted that KKR has invested nearly 4.5 billion in UK equity over the past 18 months, across deals like Viridor (waste management), ERM (sustainability), and Dawsongroup (asset leasing). So why keep hunting in London? It's simple. UK assets are cheapand KKR knows it. According to Peel Hunt, U.S. private equity firms made over a quarter of all UK bids in the first half of the year. Charles Hall, Peel Hunt's head of research, calls the UK a happy hunting ground for buyout firms. And KKR is playing the long game. After deals in Sweden and broader Europe, the Spectris offer could mark a turning point in its international push. But Advent might not go quietly. This story's far from over. Pfizer terminates study of CD47 in blood cancer due to low recruitment

Pfizer has terminated a Phase II study of its CD47 immune checkpoint inhibitor, maplirpacept, due to low recruitment. In an update on the company stated the study (NCT05626322) was terminated due to 'the inability to recruit the planned number of subjects', adding it was not due to any safety or efficacy concerns. The listing states only six patients were enrolled, much lower than the 70 the company had initially hoped to enrol when the study was first recorded on the registry in 2022. The study had hoped to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a combination therapy of maplirpacept with Monjuvi (tafasitamab) and Revlimid (lenalidomide) in patients with relapsed or refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Pfizer acquired maplirpacept during a $2.3bn buyout of Trillium Therapeutics in 2021. Clinical Trials Arena reached out to Pfizer for comment but the company did not respond before publication. This is the second study that Pfizer has terminated, with a Phase I trial of the CD47 in peripheral T cell lymphoma (PTCL) being terminated in August 2024. The therapy is still being evaluated in a Phase II investigator-led study (NCT05507541) in combination with Keytruda (pembrolizumab) in patients with relapsed or refractory DLBCL. Other than this, there are no other active studies of the drug in any indication. If approved, GlobalData analysts predict global sales of the drug to reach $120m in 2031. GlobalData is the parent company of Clinical Trials Arena. Pfizer is not the only company to have struggled with the CD47 pathway, with Gilead Sciences also ending all Phase III clinical trials of magrolimab in blood cancers, stating that an 'increased risk of death' had been detected. Gilead acquired magrolimab through a $4.9bn acquisition of its original developer Forty Seven in 2021. AbbVie has also cut ties with its CD47 partner I-Mab, stopping all development of lemzoparlimab, which was being investigated in myelodysplastic syndromes. In April 2025, ALX Oncology's CD47-blocker evorpacept, in combination with MSD's blockbuster Keytruda (pembrolizumab), failed to show benefit in two Phase II trials. BYD hits 1m production milestone for Dolphin Surf model

BYD has officially marked the production of the one millionth Dolphin Surf model. Known in China as the Seagull and Latin America as the Dolphin Mini, BYD says the Dolphin Surf has redefined what customers around the world can experience in a compact EV. The millionth example of the car rolled down the production line at the model's home factory in Xi'an, China, just 27 months after the first, becoming the fastest-selling model in its segment in history, BYD maintains. BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li said: 'The Dolphin Surf has set benchmarks and records ever since it was introduced, topping the monthly sales charts in its class more than 20 times in just over two years. We said at the car's recent European launch that it's a global superstar that breaks down barriers to the adoption of sustainable mobility, and we're thrilled that a million examples are now on the roads around the world. Regardless of whether you know this vehicle as the Seagull, Dolphin Mini or Dolphin Surf, its recipe for success is pure and simple: an accessible zero-emissions vehicle that's practical and flexible for everyday use in cities and beyond, and packed with BYD's useful technologies.' BYD maintains its recent introduction in Europe – where new-energy vehicles account for just nine percent of the A- and B-segments – will now help to improve adoption rates of sustainable mobility in this region. In Europe, the entry level Dolphin Surf, Active, pairs its 30kWh battery with a 65kW motor, while Boost features the same power but a larger 43.2kWh battery for a WLTP Combined range of 322km and a City range of 502km. The range-topping Comfort then takes the larger battery and pairs it with the 'most powerful motor in its class' (115kW/220Nm), delivering a 0-100km/h time of just 9.1 seconds. Regardless of trim level, every Dolphin Surf comes with a standard-equipment list that includes a 10.1-inch rotatable touchscreen infotainment system, rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera, LED daytime-running lights, Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, NFC keyless entry and start, adaptive cruise control, air conditioning and electrically adjustable side mirrors. As well as their bigger battery and larger 16-inch alloy wheels, Boost versions of the car add electric adjustment on the front seats, along with rain-sensing wipers and electric folding side mirrors. And the range-topping Comfort features a 360-degree camera, LED headlights, rear privacy glass, side-mirror footlights, heated front seats and wireless smartphone charging.
