Community supports Lorain Police Department after ambush, shooting of 3 officers

Yahoo7 days ago
LORAIN, Ohio (WJW) – After community members learned that three Lorain Police officers were ambushed and shot on Wednesday, a memorial began to grow outside the Lorain Police Department.
Suspect accused of 'ambushing' three local officers identified
That continued on Thursday as people who wanted to offer support or simply pay their respects stopped by the station where a Lorain Police cruiser is now parked out front near the memorial.
Lifelong Lorain resident Debbie Siss told Fox 8 News she saw the flags outside at half-staff and felt compelled to stop.
'It makes me feel sad, and it makes me love Lorain even more because our police officers, they protect us. They help us, and to have somebody just shooting them down, that's chicken. He's a big chicken,' she said about the deceased suspect accused of shooting the officers.
A group of about a dozen retired Lorain officers were set to get together for a reunion on Wednesday. One of them is Larry Giese, who spent 20 of his 28 years with LPD as the head K-219 trainer.
He shared that he wanted to offer his support to those he still knows at the department. He added that he and his fellow retirees hope the community backs Lorain officers moving forward.
Vigil held for Lorain officers shot during ambush — who are they?
He doesn't believe he could handle being an officer in today's world.
'You know, maybe someone will start paying attention to what this police work is all about,' he said. 'It's bad. I mean, it's bad. You just don't know anymore. There's too much gun play going on.'
Another retiree from law enforcement, Stephani Loffredo now runs a nonprofit in Las Vegas called Courtroom Critters, which offers support to those in crisis through therapy dogs.
The former mounted officer who spent 10 years with the Geauga County Sheriff's Office said she happened to be visiting home with a therapy dog named Hufflepuff.
When she learned of the tragedy she decided to bring Hufflepuff the bulldog to the Lorain Police Department to try and help officers cope because she knows the kind of trauma this situation can cause.
'Police officers, we need them so much, and every police officer is a hero and they also need the support from the community so that when this type of tragedy happens, that these officers are getting that support,' Laffredo said. 'All of the officers are going to go through some sort of trauma and all of the officers need a little bit of wellness checkup, and sometimes just a great therapy dog can help them out a lot.'

Northeast Ohioans are also showing support with monetary donations.
The sister-in-law of the youngest of the three officers, Phil Wagner, started a GoFundMe page to accept donations from people who were asking how they can help.

Another arrest linked to Austin Drummond manhunt in Tennessee: What we know

A third arrest has been made in connection to the Tennessee manhunt sparked by the deaths of four people and a 7-month-old infant girl found alive in a car seat. Dearrah Sanders, 23, was arrested Aug. 4 on a charge of accessory after the fact to first-degree murder, according to a statement from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. The statement alleges that Sanders "assisted" the still at-large suspect, Austin Drummond, after the murders but did not specify how. It is unclear if Sanders has legal representation as of Monday afternoon, Aug. 4. Sanders' arrest follows two announced by the TBI on Aug. 2. Tanaka Brown, 29, and Giovonte Thomas, 29, were arrested on the same charge of accessory after the fact to first-degree murder on Aug. 1 and Aug. 2, respectively, the agency said in a pair of statements. An update added that Brown has been charged with one count of tampering with evidence. Brown and Sanders were booked into the Lake County Jail. Thomas was already booked into the Madison County Jail on an unrelated charge and was set to be moved to Lake County Jail for arraignment, according to the statement. Found baby sparks murder investigation The case began after a 7-month-old infant girl was found sitting in a car seat in an unconnected person's front yard near Tigrett, a community in Dyer County, on July 29. Hours later, authorities announced they were investigating a crime scene where four people were dead, revealing there may be a connection between the cases. The victims were later identified as 20-year-old Adrianna Williams, 21-year-old James M. Wilson, 15-year-old Braydon Williams and 38-year-old Cortney Rose. They were the baby's parents, uncle and grandmother, respectively. In a press conference at TBI headquarters in Jackson on Aug. 1, TBI Director David Rausch said investigators believe it was a targeted attack. A massive law enforcement presence was deployed in Jackson, Tennessee on Aug. 4 as authorities followed up on a lead about the whereabouts of Drummond, according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal, part of the USA TODAY Network. A little before noon local time, dozens of state and local law enforcement agencies gathered on the lawn of West Jackson Baptist Church, deploying drones and K-9s in search of Drummond. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said around 12:15 p.m. CT that Drummond had not been arrested, but that the police presence was related to the search. The Commercial Appeal reported that an Aug. 1 affidavit filed by the U.S. Marshals Service in federal court showed Deputy Marshal Darrel Weldon writing that "it is believed that Austin Drummond possibly fled the state of Tennessee." Who is Austin Drummond? Drummond, 28, is currently on the state's most wanted list on charges of first-degree murder, felon in possession of a firearm, aggravated kidnapping and possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. "This individual has shown a propensity for violence, and he needs to be taken off the streets," Tyreece Miller, U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Tennessee, said. Drummond served a 13-year sentence for aggravated robbery and retaliation charges in 2014 – according to the Commercial Appeal. He was released in September 2024, despite several contraband charges, including having meth and a handgun.

Huntington Beach man fights for his life after e-bike accident

A Huntington Beach man was fighting for life Monday after he was critically injured in an e-bike accident on Saturday night. Family members and police have identified the man as Kolby Aipa, 20. 'Yes our baby boy is in the fight of his life, he IS still with us though,' his mother, Val Aipa, posted on social media late Sunday night. Huntington Beach police spokesman Corbin Carson said Monday that Aipa was being towed by a car of people that he was associated with on Pacific Coast Highway on Saturday night when he lost control of his e-bike and was struck by the same car that had been towing him. The accident occurred at 10:08 p.m. Saturday night, near the intersection of Seapoint Street and Pacific Coast Highway, Carson said. Aipa, critically injured, was taken to UCI Medical Center. There have been no arrests but the investigation is ongoing, Carson said. Police closed Pacific Coast Highway in both directions late Saturday night due to what they termed a 'major traffic collision investigation.' Northbound lanes were closed at Seapoint Street, with southbound lanes closed at Warner Avenue. A GoFundMe to support the Aipa family was set up by the Pai family, owners of Huntington Surf and Sport. As of mid-Monday afternoon it had raised nearly $40,000. Aipa Surf is a local surf apparel, surfboards and accessories company. Kolby Aipa's grandfather, Ben, founded the brand in 1970, creating the influential 'sting' design soon after.
