AAP has become so afraid of Akali Dal, says Sukhbir Badal after courting arrest
The SAD President was stopped by police squads from visiting gurdwara Sri Amb Sahib to pay obeisance, after which he was scheduled to lead Akali workers to the Vigilance Bureau office to protest against political vendetta against Majithia.
A large number of Akali workers were forcibly taken away by heavy police contingents deployed to prevent them from paying obeisance and assembling inside the sacred precincts of the Gurdwara Sahib.
'AAP has become so afraid of the Shiromani Akali Dal that it conducted a state-level crackdown on Akali workers and detained hundreds of senior leaders and workers at their residences besides undertaking preventive arrests,' Badal told the media at the protest site.
'Everything in Punjab is being directed and run by the communal non-Punjabi Arvind Kejriwal. Police cases are just a façade. We will not allow Punjab to be ruled by communal elements from Delhi,' said Badal, while speaking to the media from a police van. Badal further said Kejriwal had fallen back on repression as his last desperate measure to divert people's attention from the 'loot that his gang was currently carrying out in Punjab'. Repression and political vendetta, he said, are the last resort taken by all unpopular and rootless leaders.
Describing the crackdown on peaceful Akalis as worse than the one during Emergency or even during the Jaitu Da Morcha, he said not even during those days were Sikhs stopped from going to their sacred shrines as Akali workers were stopped on Wednesday from peacefully visiting Gurdham Gurdwara Amb Sahib in Mohali.
Badal said, 'I don't care about this repression against me personally, as defiance against repression runs in my blood. But I warn the government against repression against our peaceful Akali workers.' He described Wednesday's developments as 'broad daylight murder of democracy, civil liberties and human rights. Where are the champions of human rights today?'

Takht Patna Sahib declares Sukhbir Badal ‘Tankhayia' for defying summons
The five Singh Sahibs or head priests of the Takht Sri Patna Sahib, one of the five seats of temporal authority of Sikhism, on Saturday declared Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal a 'Tankhayia'—guilty of violating Sikh religious conduct—for allegedly ignoring its summons and undermining its authority. In August last year, the Akal Takht Sahib had passed a similar verdict against the former Punjab deputy chief minister. 'This action has been taken in view of the events that began on May 21, 2025, when unauthorised and unconstitutional interference was carried out by the Jathedars of Akal Takht and Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, challenging the established norms, constitution, and authority of Takht Patna Sahib,' Takht Patna Sahib Jathedar Giani Baldev Singh said, announcing the decision. 'Sukhbir Badal was involved in influencing and interfering with the affairs of Takht Patna Sahib, particularly during a series of controversial decisions and actions surrounding the status of ex-Patna Sahib Jathedar Giani Ranjit Singh Gohar. Badal was given two opportunities to appear and present his position, but he failed to do so,' Baldev Singh said. 'Even after an extension of 20 days—reportedly granted at the request of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami—Badal did not comply,' he added. 'By repeatedly ignoring the summons and undermining the authority of Takht Patna Sahib, Sukhbir Singh Badal has violated the religious code. As a result, he is hereby declared Tankhayia,' Baldev Singh said. In August 2024, the Akal Takht Sahib had passed a similar verdict against Badal. Then Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh had said that Badal had harmed Sikh interests through decisions taken during his 2007–2017 tenure as deputy chief minister. 'Until he seeks forgiveness before Guru Granth Sahib in humility, the Tankhayia status shall remain,' the Singh Sahibs had said. In December 2024, the Akal Takht hosted a gathering of the five Singh Sahibs to revisit Badal's previous 'tankhah', the punishment for violating the Sikh religious code. At that time, he reportedly admitted to 'all mistakes' made during his government and was assigned religious punishment, which included performing various sevas (voluntary services) at the Takhts, such as guarding the gates, washing utensils, and listening to kirtan (devotional singing). The present dispute stems from a controversial May 21 decision by the Punjab-based Takhts—Akal Takht, Takht Damdama Sahib, and Takht Keshgarh Sahib—to lift the excommunication of Giani Ranjit Singh Gohar and simultaneously impose sanctions on the current Patna Sahib Jathedar Giani Baldev Singh and priest Gurdial Singh. In response, Takht Patna Sahib retaliated by declaring both Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj (acting Jathedar of Akal Takht) and Giani Tek Singh Dhanaula (Takht Damdama Sahib) as 'Tankhayia'. The Takht also summoned Sukhbir Singh Badal, alleging that he played a role in orchestrating the interventions against Patna Sahib's authority. With Badal's continued absence, Saturday's announcement marks a formal escalation in the clash between Sikh religious authorities and political figures, underscoring ongoing tensions between various Takhts and the political leadership of SAD.

DA case: HC defers Majithia's plea hearing for July 8
The Punjab and Haryana high court on Friday deferred hearing on the plea from Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia against arrest and remand in a disproportionate assets case for July 8. Majithia, arrested in the DA case, was sent to a seven-day vigilance remand by the Mohali court on June 26, which was extended by four days on July 2. The Punjab Vigilance Bureau on June 25 arrested Majithia in the DA case allegedly involving the laundering of ₹540 crore of 'drug money'. He had moved high court on July 1, calling the FIR and his arrest 'political witch-hunting and vendetta' for being a vocal critic of the current dispensation. 'The present petition…raises important questions of law and principle concerning abuse of criminal process, misuse of remand powers, and the right to fair investigation and liberty. The petitioner respectfully prays for appropriate reliefs, including quashing of the illegal remand order and appropriate directions to prevent further abuse of process,' his petition of July 1 read, wherein he had challenged seven-day remand. The prayer now has been modified and the July 2 order of extending his vigilance remand by four days has also been challenged. 'The remand application filed by the investigating agency lacked any concrete or urgent investigative ground and merely relied on broad, speculative allegations such as the petitioner's alleged influence, foreign connections, and general statements about the need to confront him with documents or digital devices,' the petition read. He had also submitted that the Supreme Court in its order on March 4, had refused custodial interrogation of the petitioner despite the same allegations being pressed before it via multiple affidavits filed by Punjab in a drugs-related FIR registered in 2021. The fresh FIR against Majithia stems from an ongoing investigation being conducted by a Punjab Police special investigation team into the 2021 drug case. In 2021, Majithia was booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. The action was taken on the basis of a 2018 report of the anti-drug Special Task Force. He spent over five months in Patiala Jail and walked out of prison in August 2022 after the high court granted him bail.

Invoking history, the MNS chief said: 'The Maratha empire ruled half of the country, including Gujarat, North Indian states. Did we impose Marathi? No. Hindi is just 200 years old. Why was it being done unnecessarily? They actually wanted to test if Mumbai can be separated from Maharashtra.' Speaking about BJP veteran L K Advani, Raj asked: 'L K Advani studied in a Christian missionary convent school…. in English medium…. can anybody question his Hindutva?' He added, 'Shrikant Thackeray (my grandfather) studied in English medium… can you question his commitment for Marathi? Where you studied and in which language has nothing to do with your commitment for Marathi. It has come from within.' The rally comes a day after CM Devendra Fadnavis, whose government is on the backfoot over the move to include Hindi as the third language in primary schools in the state, had issued a stern warning. Saying that there was nothing wrong about harbouring Marathi pride, Fadnavis said, 'It does not give individuals the licence to force, intimidate, or physically assault those who do not speak Marathi.' In Mumbai, the Marathi vote bank accounts for up to 30 to 35 per cent. In the past, the BJP often depended on alliance partner, the undivided Shiv Sena, to bag the Marathi votes in Mumbai and its adjoining districts. The MNS, on the other hand, was often used by pan-Indian parties to cut into Shiv Sena votes.
