Look inside the bright and luxurious bungalow that's made the final of Scotland's Home of the Year

Scotsman29-05-2025
The excitement is mounting, as we catapult towards the grand finale of Scotland's Home of the Year on June 2.
It takes place at Glasgow's House for an Art Lover, where six sets of nervous property owners discover who's taking the grand prize.
They include Pamela and Gordon Bain of the Sandstone Bungalow in Giffnock.
Their home became the first finalist way back in episode one, the West heat, which was screened in April. At the decider, it'll be going up against Hilltop House, Pitmedden; Wee City Nook, Edinburgh; The Tree House, Broughty Ferry; An Cala Cottage on the Isle of Skye and Craigmount, near Dalbeattie.
It's stiff competition, but the bungalow's owners should clear room on a mantelpiece, just in case.
After all, the judges were completely blown away, and each awarded it a 10. They only had positive things to say.
Even if they don't win, the Bain family are amazed to make it this far.
'It was absolutely bizarre. You know, we really weren't expecting to get to the final,' says Pamela, who works as a graphic designer. 'To be honest, it would just be lovely to be featured, as we've always watched the programme. Well, I certainly have. We just thought this would be a fun experience that would celebrate all the work we've done in the house'.
Since appearing on the show, Pamela has been glued to series seven.
Her favourite contenders, apart from her own, have been The Tree House and An Cala Cottage.
As their episode revealed, Pamela and her family - husband, Gordon Bain, son, Caleb, and their Irish setter - have been at their Thirties property for five years.
They transformed it, which meant spending almost every weekend and evening to get it to the stage that made the SHOTY judges' eyes turn to saucers.
The team loved that the house featured plays on contrasting colours, with rooms painted in light shades that had dramatically dark floors, and vice versa,. Then there was the wooden herringbone floor that extends from the vast hallway and into the kitchen.
As well as changing the decor, the family have added a cool zinc-clad extension, to create an open plan cooking and living space. This is where Pamela placed her SHOTY favourite spot loveheart, as the dual aspect means she can keep an eye on both the dog and her son.
Banjo Beale loved it here too, and said he wanted to make pancakes.
'He's welcome to come round and do that, any time,' Pamela says.
After the property had been on the show and was revealed as a finalist, the Bains had lots of proud friends getting in contact.
'They were all so happy for us and were shouting about it on social media, and it was really nice to have that support,' she says.
Apparently, when Caleb went to school, other kids mentioned that they'd spotted him in the show.
'He thought it was so funny that people were coming up to him saying, 'well done',' says Pamela. He's bound to be popular among his friends, as one of the bungalow's rooms, which wasn't featured on the programme, is a cinema space, where he can watch films with his pals.
This may be a modern addition, but the judges on SHOTY loved that the Bains had leant into the property's Thirties features, and hadn't ripped out elements, for the sake of it.
For example, it retains its stained glass, as well as original fitted wardrobes in the main bedroom and, in a bathroom, they have the rather unique addition of a blue loo. Instead of replacing this with something neutral, they painted the whole room dark blue, wallpapered the ceiling with a landscape print, and managed to celebrate their pastel cludgie.
The judges also loved the use of Pamela's dark wood antique furniture, including a drinks trolley and sideboard, that she has showcased in the dining room. She inherited those pieces from her granny, and the judges thought that the setting made them look contemporary.
'We did buy the house, thinking that they would look good in it,' she says.
There are also lots of other cool objects scattered around the house. Things that you wouldn't find everywhere, like the pretty pink glass kitchen pendant lights, a vintage chandelier and saffron-coloured curtains that graze the floor.
They're testament to Pamela's magpie-like skills.
'There's a lot of secondhand buys from charity shops and vintage warehouses, but also there's a huge amount of high street,' she says. 'I'm not snobby when it comes to buying a vase from a supermarket. When I see something that I think reflects our personality, then I'll get it, and it doesn't really matter where it's from. I think having a nice collection of different things makes it feel a bit more unique and full of personality'.
When it comes to design, Pamela gets much of her inspiration online and has her own Instagram account, @perfecting_the_house
'I mostly use Pinterest for ideas. I'm doing a lot of boards, and also I look at Instagram, as there are lots of home accounts, and I obviously share my home on there as well,' she says. 'So, there's a big community, just sharing inspiration'.
Since appearing on the show, Pamela has, unsurprisingly, had more folk than usual asking her for design advice.
'I've got a lot of very talented friends, so they don't need any help, but I do get people asking for input,' she says. 'I love that. I'm very much up for helping. I've got a colour and a pattern sort of eye'.
The Scotland's Home of the Year final is on June 2, 8.30pm, BBC Scotland, www.bbc.co.uk

Pamela Anderson breaks silence on Meghan Markle's 'rip off' Netflix cooking show

Pamela Anderson has finally spoken out on viral claims Meghan Markle 'ripped off' her cooking show with Netflix series, With Love, Meghan. Fans of the Baywatch bombshell, 58, were left incensed when the former working Royal, 44, debuted her latest TV venture - which bore eerie similarities to Pamela's Cooking With Love, which premiered earlier this year on Prime Video. The Naked Gun star Anderson opened up on Sunday's Watch What Happens Live! with host Andy Cohen asking her: 'On a scale from one to 10, how much of a rip-off did you feel like With Love, Meghan was of your show, Pamela's Cooking with Love?' Anderson, who was appearing alongside new love and co-star Liam Neeson responded: 'One. I didn't - I didn't really look, but I mean, I didn't invent cooking shows' adding that Markle 'is just doing her thing.' The drama erupted when Prince Harry 's wife gave People magazine some of her top domestic tips ahead of the release of With Love, Meghan, in March. These included how to 'elevate' a normal dinner – such as after ordering a takeaway. Citing Chinese as a favorite delivery option, Markle told the US magazine: 'I like being able to do a hybrid, but even when I get a takeout I will try to plate it beautifully.' And discussing her new trademark As Ever – after she failed to secure copyright branding for her original name, American Riviera Orchard – she insisted: 'It's a learning curve. 'I appreciate everyone who gave me the grace to make mistakes and figure it out and also be forgiving with myself through that.' The two former TV stars live more than a thousand miles apart, yet both were smiling and giggling in brightly lit country kitchens, filming aspirational cooking with photogenic friends and famous celebrities. Both are seen carrying wicker baskets of fruit and vegetables picked from their gardens, dancing with joy, and gleefully high-fiving their celebrity guests. Both series are even the same length: eight episodes. When Meghan's first episode was shown, it prompted withering complaints that she had copied Pamela's winning formula. 'So similar it's freaky,' said one reviewer, while others branded Meghan's series 'inauthentic' and 'copycat'. More charitable observers might put this down to coincidence, as neither show seems to deviate from the wholesome template of many an aspirational cookery program. However, while Markle filmed her series last summer, with the first trailer making its debut in January, Anderson's was commissioned back in February 2023 by Canadian broadcaster Flavour Network. And its trailer has been available for all to see since last October. Last month it was claimed Markle and Prince Harry's hopes of a new Netflix deal are 'dead' after their two most recent shows flopped, Meghan's lifestyle show failed to break into Netflix 's top 300 programs for the first half of 2025 and was even thrashed by multiple seasons of Suits. A second season of With Love, Meghan, was announced by the Duchess herself as the first season came out in March this year as part of the couple's $100million deal with the streaming giant, which expires this year

I went on a £11,000 desert orgasm retreat — this is everything that happened

If you ever find yourself in Joshua Tree National Park in California, don't be alarmed if you hear the moans and groans of women at the height of orgasm. The Back to Body Sex Retreat takes place among the wilderness, which aims to teach women how to reach climax. The X-rated retreats are hosted at a variety of beautiful locations and range in cost — typically guests pay around £11,000, but Jana Hocking, this week's Just Between Us podcast guest, went along to the three-day retreat, priced at just under £1,000. Hosted by founder Pamela Marsden and her team of helpers, there's a packed timetable — from bondage classes during which guests are stimulated to orgasm, to real-life anatomy lessons. At 40, Jana felt like she was in a 'sexual spiral' and says she had begun to perform during sex, at the expense of her own pleasure. So, keen to change her ways, she headed to Back to Body, one of 16 women (all in their 40s, apart from one 75-year-old) who were keen to change their ways. Here's how she got on… Love reading juicy stories like this? Need some tips for how to spice things up in the bedroom? Sign up to The Hook-Up and we'll slide into your inbox every week with all the latest sex and dating stories from Metro. We can't wait for you to join us! 'I thought it would be full of extroverts who were outlandish and wanted to perform in front of each other, but it really wasn't,' says Jana. 'They were either getting divorced and realised they hadn't had a proper orgasm and wanted to right wrongs, while other women were dealing with trauma and needed to learn how to enjoy sex again, which was quite heartbreaking. Upon arrival, the group were presented with a charcuterie board of fruits and cheeses. As they tucked in, creator Pamela appeared. Little did they know, the women had already been taught a valuable lesson. Pamela asked if they had helped themselves to the snacks they wanted, or if they'd stood back and let others eat first. Jana initially thought she'd gone wrong when she began eating without hesitation, but Pamela insisted she'd actually got it right. Jana says: 'Pamela explained that women are brought up to believe we take the scraps. 'She told us: 'Let this cheeseboard be an example that you should put your needs first''. The first exercise involved going around in a circle, with each woman explaining why they attended the retreat — but Jana says that was pretty much the only tame thing that happened. Then, it was on to tantric meditation, guided by Pamela and the helpers. 'We had to hold our vulvas and rock back and forth, either naked or in our underwear, and speak to our vulva and tell it what we wanted, who we wanted to be and what our goals were,' Jana says. 'My goal was to take back ownership of my sexuality because I realised I was performing — I can do a Meg Ryan orgasms like the best of them — but am I having a real orgasm? Am I putting my needs first?' For the next activity, blindfolds appeared. 'We were blindfolded and laid on the ground while sexy music played,' Jana explains. 'The helpers adorned your naked body with crystals and fruit, to bring you back to your femininity. 'The older woman lying next to me looked down at her body and just lit up,' Jana adds. 'I started crying because it was beautiful to see her looking at her body like it was brand new.' It gets wilder, if that's even possible. Jana says there was a shabari workshop — a Japanese art in the use of rope with a partner. It's often considered a form of bondage, and at the retreat, it involved the helpers stimulating the women in different ways by scratching, whispering and growling. The aim was for each participant to discover which kink lit that fire inside them, and made them want to get it on. Following that, a male sex educator brought Pamela to orgasm in front of everyone. 'It was half an hour of foreplay — flirting, shibari, stroking, lathering up with lube — then the climax was him fingering her,' Jana says. 'I thought I'd feel uncomfortable but apart from being nervous, it just went on so long I got bored.' There was even a demonstration from a urologist who got naked and pointed at her private parts, so all the women knew every part of their anatomy. Sadly, Janna was the only one at the retreat who didn't reach orgasm, but she's now well-equipped to climax in the comfort of her own bed. 'I got close with the shibari ropes,' she says. 'I think my brain was just too on during the whole thing. 'A lot of women got really good at letting go and being touched consensually, but all I kept thinking was 'who's doing this?' because you've got a blindfold on. More Trending 'The women around me were experiencing the most amazing orgasms, but I couldn't switch off, unfortunately.' Upon leaving though, she hooked up with an ex-boyfriend and had an amazing time. View More » 'I had the best sex I've ever had,' Jana says. 'I'd spend a grand to do that again.' Pamela Anderson finally gives her verdict on Meghan Markle 'copying' her cooking show

Pamela Anderson has finally spoken out on claims Meghan Markle 'ripped off' her cooking programme - that was released just before Meghan's own Netlix show Pamela Anderson has revealed what she really thinks of Meghan Markle's Netflix show - after it drew comparisons with her own cooking programme that was released a few days before. ‌ The ex-Baywatch star released 'Pamela's Cooking With Love' in February 2025. It premiered on the Flavour Network in Cananda before dropping on Amazon Prime, where UK viewers can currently watch it. ‌ It follows the 58-year-old, who has been vegan for more than 30 years, as she "invites some of today's most sought-after chefs to join her on a stunning rural property on Vancouver Island, where together, they'll prepare delicious plant-based meals." ‌ Then in March, 'With Love, Meghan' premiered on Netflix, following the Duchess of Sussex as she "invites friends and famous guests to a beautiful California estate, where she shares cooking, gardening and hosting tips. At the time Meghan was accused of 'copying' Pamela's new lifestyle series - with the two shows even sharing similar names. And the trailer for Pamela's show was released in October 2024, nearly three months before Meghan dropped hers. ‌ There is even similar dialogue, with Pamela explaining how "I just always have wanted to take things to another level". While Meghan declares: "I've always loved taking something pretty ordinary and elevating it." Both women are also seen high-fiving guests in the short snippets. Fans were quick to notice the similarities, with one noting on X: "The entire concept is strikingly similar." As another vented: "Markle's show is a straight copy of Pamela Anderson's cooking and entertaining show. Go look at the trailer!" ‌ A third posted: "If you watch the trailer for Pamela's new show, it's a more authentic version of what Meghan was trying to achieve & it looks as though Meghan has copied everything! The trailers are so similar it's freaky." Now Pamela - who remained tight-lipped earlier this year - has had her say on what she thinks of the 'copycat' claims. Appearing on US chat show 'Watch What Happens Live', she played a game of 'Plead the Fifth' with host Andy Cohen. During the quick fire segment, she was asked: "On a scale of 1 to 10, how much of a rip off did you feel like With Love, Meghan was of your show Pamela's Cooking With Love? There were articles saying these two shows were very similar." ‌ Pamela replied: "One," to which a shocked Andy said: "One? You didn't see any similarities?" Keeping things cordial, the actress went on to say: "No, but I didn't really look. I didn't invent cooking shows or anything," before adding of Meghan: "She's just doing her thing." She was then asked about Hollywood actor Sylvester Stallone denying her claim that he once offered her a "condo and a Porsche to become his number one girl". There was no hesitation from Pamela as she replied: "Come on, why would I make that up?" But the question she dodged and used her 'Plead the Fifth' on was 'Rank your husbands from favourite to least favourite' referring to her four marriages to Tommy Lee, Kid Rock, Rick Salomon and Dan Hayhurst.
