Charming UK town with thriving high-street is just 3.5-miles from Blackpool

Daily Mirror25-06-2025
Overshadowed by the dazzling lights of Blackpool's infamous coastline, this quaint town feels like you've taken a step back in time - but still boasts all your modern day conveniences
Escape the bustling crowds of tourists in this idyllic town that perfectly blends its rich history with modern convenience. In 2023, a whopping 21.5 million tourists flocked to the Blackpool, an iconic seaside town famed for its golden sandy beaches, thrilling Pleasure Beach rides, and the soaring landmark Blackpool Tower.
The influx marks a six per cent spike compared to the year before, despite heavy criticism the town is falling into disrepair. Here, you'll find endless rows of flashing arcades, award-winning fish and chip shops - and nightclubs that stay open until the sunrise. However, if you're looking for something a little more relaxing - you simply have to check out Poulton-le-Flyde.

Located just 3.5 miles from Blackpool, this sleepy market town has somehow managed to dodge the tourist spotlight - despite its endless charm and picturesque streets. At first glance, Poulton looks like a scene from Bridgerton - with stunning churches, cobbled streets and a ubiquitous history.

But, the town's compact centre is filled with boutique shops, an outdoor market, cosy coffee shops and creatives. Stopping by for a sweet treat at Three Little Piggies Bakery is a must, as well as buying eco-friendly candles and wax melts at The Wax House.
"The historic church of St Chad's, surrounded by its famous crocuses, is a sight that has graced countless calendars," hails Great British Life. "And thanks to the RHS Gold Medal-winning Bloom in Poulton team, you don't have to wander far in the town without seeing a glorious floral display."
Located just under 250 miles from Central London, driving to Poulton-le-Flyde takes around four hours and 35 minutes in the car. However, direct trains to Blackpool North can slash almost 90 minutes from the journey. From here, you can catch a five-minute train journey over to the town, or get an 11-minute taxi.

If you're flexible with dates, you can grab single adult fares from Euston to Blackpool for just £56. Tickets from Blackpool to Poulton cost just £2.10.
Accommodation in Poulton-le-Flyde is limited due to its small size, meaning you may have to stay in Blackpool itself - and venture over to the town as a day trip. This is a great way to keep the budget down, as Blackpool is home to a slew of cheap hotels and B&Bs.

For example, a weekend's stay (Friday, July 4-6) at Cliffs Hotel - located 2.9 miles from Poulton - will set you back just £226. This is based on two adults sharing a Standard Double Room. If you want something a little more fancy, check out the Claremont Hotel.
This all-inclusive resort is less than a 15-minute walk from Blackpool Tower, boasts sleek rooms, and stunning sea views. Staying here on the exact same nights costs £290.

The 'magical' Scottish island loch that captivated Sex and the City star

Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon and her wife visited the tiny town on Isle of Skye and took a boat to the stunning Loch Hollywood actress Cynthia Nixon has joined the growing list of admirers enchanted by the wild beauty of the Isle of Skye. The actor hailed her "magical" experience after enjoying a scenic boat trip/ ‌ The Sex and the City star, best known for her role as Miranda Hobbes in the hit television series, travelled to the Misty Isle with her wife Christine Marinoni. During their stay, they visited the southern tip of Skye. ‌ There they boarded a boat from the tiny hamlet of Elgol and journeyed across Loch Scavaig to reach the remote and dramatic Loch Coruisk., Scottish Daily Express reports. ‌ Posting on Instagram, Nixon, 59, was full of praise for their experience on the glacial loch, singling out the family-run Misty Isle Boat Trips team that took them there. She wrote: 'Scotland adventure from the wee town of Elgol on the tip of Isle of Skye to the remote, magical Loch Coruisk. HIGHLY recommend this tour with the family run Misty Isles Boat Trips. "Thanks to the family matriarch Anne for telling us to put the pedal to the metal and get on board and you were right, your grandson Seamus was the best! Oh and don't forget to pack sandwiches from Cafe Elgol.' ‌ The Emmy and Tony Award-winning actress also shared a short video featuring highlights from the trip. While the weather appeared typically Scottish, with some rain during the outing, it did little to dampen the couple's spirits. Fans quickly flooded the comments to echo Nixon's enthusiasm, with one follower writing: 'Yesss! We were there couple of weekends ago and loved it, best of Isle of Skye!' ‌ Another added: 'I said hi to you when we crossed paths in Cromarty, glad you had a lovely time!' Loch Coruisk, often described as one of Scotland's most atmospheric and awe-inspiring locations, lies in the shadow of the Black Cuillin mountain range and is fed by the short Scavaig River, believed to be the shortest river in the UK. ‌ The loch is nearly two miles long but less than 400 metres wide, and its inky blue waters are framed by towering, jagged peaks often shrouded in mist. Though reachable by foot via an 11km hike from Sligachan or a 9km route from Kilmarie that includes the tricky 'Bad Step', most visitors opt for the easier and more dramatic approach by boat from Elgol. This allows guests to skip the long walk while still enjoying the breathtaking arrival into the heart of the Cuillin. ‌ The Mackinnon family has operated Misty Isle Boat Trips since 1969, welcoming visitors from around the world to experience the scenery. Seumas Mackinnon, born and raised in Elgol, now runs the tours with his wife Anne, sons and grandchildren. 'Come and experience for yourself the finest scenery Scotland has to offer on one of our boat trips from Elgol to Loch Coruisk on the Isle of Skye,' the company states. Elgol itself, a scattered village located 14 miles south-west of Broadford at the end of the Strathaird peninsula, is reached via a winding single-track road through the Red Cuillin hills and past the ruins of Cill Chriosd and its picturesque graveyard. The journey is a scenic adventure in its own right, with views across the island adding to the sense of remoteness.

TV Review: With star turns from Hinds and Elordi, hats off to the casting director of The Narrow Road to the Deep North

Ciarán Hinds, a passionate love story, a prisoner-of-war camp, explosions and a bookshop pick-up… welcome to the world of a new five-part drama. The Narrow Road to the Deep North, based on Richard Flanagan's Booker Prize-winning novel, plays out over three timelines. It starts with a bang in Syria, 1941, and although it's quite hard to make out a lot of the action (it's beautifully shot but I questioned the strength of my glasses at how dark it was), this is a series to welcome you in from the start.
