Rugby World Cup 1995: Where were YOU on this day 30 years ago?

Every South African rugby fan will be able to recall where he or she was on this day 30 years ago as the Springboks lifted the Webb Ellis Cup for the first time at Ellis Park in Johannesburg.
Provided you were born of course, 24 June 1995 will forever stick in the memory bank as Francois Pienaar accepted the trophy from Nelson Mandela following a nail-biting extra-time victory over the All Blacks.
Personally, I watched the match at friend's house then headed to that infamous watering hole in Claremont called 'Green Man' (remember it?) where they rescreened the Test. We drank beer, we drank more beer, and then around 05:00 the next morning they kicked us out.
There are also vague recollections of street lights being climbed and flags stolen along Main Road in Rondebosch, but that might just have been the beer talking …

On this day 30 years ago Joel Stransky landed an extra-time drop goal as the Springboks beat the All Blacks 15-12 at Ellis Park in Johannesburg to win the 1995 Rugby World Cup.
It was the first of a record four Rugby World Cup titles for the Springboks, who would go on to win the 2007 World Cup in France under captain John Smit and coach Jake White, the 2019 edition in Japan with Siya Kolisi and Rassie Erasmus as skipper and coach, respectively, as well as the 2023 tournament in France with Kolisi and Jacques Nienaber at the helm.
Anyone betting against the Springboks making it a hat-trick of titles – and five overall – in 2027 in Australia?
That day – Saturday, 24 June 1995 – remains arguably the greatest ever sporting occasion in South Africa's history.
So, what has happened to the starting XV from that unforgettable 1995 final?
Tragically, five of the run-on team have died, along with coach Kitch Christie.

Springboks open Test season against Italy: Stats, facts and figures

The current world champions have enjoyed a dominant time against the Italians since their first meeting in 1995. The Springbok players chat during their captain's run at Artemio Franchi on November 18, 2016 in Florence, Italy, prior to their Test match against Italy the following day. Picture:The Springboks get their Test year under way with the first of two Tests against Italy at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday, with kick-off at 5.10pm. Rassie Erasmus' team are the big favourites to win the match, having dominated against the Italians over the years. Here are some of the key statistics, facts and figures you might not know about the teams and clashes between them. History The Boks and Italy have met 16 times, with the South Africans enjoying a 15-1 record against the Italians. The first meeting between the teams took place on 12 November 1995 in Rome, when the Boks, then also newly crowned world champions, won 40-21. The Boks have scored 764 points in total in these 16 meetings, while Italy have scored 195. The Boks have scored 102 tries to Italy's 16. The biggest winning score is 101-0 to the Boks, recorded in Durban in June 1999. Italy's only triumph The Italians have beaten the current world champions only once, in Florence on 19 November 2016. On that day Italy won 20-18 to shock the rugby world. The Boks' tries were scored by Bryan Habana, in his 124th Test, and Damian de Allende, with Pat Lambie kicking a conversion and a penalty, while Elton Jantjies also slotted a penalty. Coach Allister Coetzee's Bok team on the day included Willie le Roux at fullback, Damian de Allende at inside centre, Rudy Paige at scrumhalf, Warren Whiteley at eighthman, Lood de Jager at No 5 lock, Pieter-Steph du Toit at number 4 lock, Vincent Koch at tighthead and Adriaan Strauss at hooker, and the captain. Matches in South Africa The Boks have played Italy seven times in South Africa, but this will be the first Test between the sides at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria, where the hosts have a 78% win record overall (32 wins from 41 Tests). In those seven matches the Boks have registered a number of big wins. Besides the 101-0 in Durban in 1999, the Boks won 74-3 in Port Elizabeth, the week before the Durban massacre in 1999, 60-14 in Port Elizabeth in 2001, 26-0 in Cape Town in 2008, 29-13 in Witbank in 2010, 55-11 in East London in 2010, and 44-10 in Durban in 2013. Milestones The Boks will have 732 Test caps in total in the starting team on Saturday, with a further 466 on the bench. Vincent Tshituka, of the Sharks and formerly the Lions, will make his debut in the No 7 jersey. Fullback Damian Willemse will play his first Test since the 2023 Rugby World Cup final in Paris, after sitting out all of last season with an injury. His back-up on the bench, Willie le Roux, should he enter the action, will earn his 99th Test cap. Jesse Kriel will become the Boks' 67th Test captain, while Eben Etzebeth will extend his record number of Test caps to 132 on Saturday..

British and Irish Lions send shock SOS to Owen Farrell

Owen Farrell received a shock British and Irish Lions call up Thursday after utility back Elliot Daly was ruled out of their Australia tour, with his father, head coach Andy Farrell, citing experience in defending the decision. The 33-year-old former England captain, a three-time Lions tourist, earned the last of his 112 Test caps at the 2023 World Cup and has not played any rugby for nearly nine weeks after suffering a concussion. But the flyhalf is a proven international performer and his father said the call-up was justified. 'When you look at the experience that Elliot's had, I mean the experience isn't just the playing side, it's how you make the group feel, the little chats that you have around the place to make sure that everything's gelled together,' he said. 'And obviously Owen would bring a lot of that into the group.' While Finn Russell is the clear favourite to start the three-Test series against the Wallabies at flyhalf, Owen Farrell can also operate in the centre and has a trusty boot for goal-kicking. But his call-up is a surprise with the Lions having plenty of options in the backs and the likes of Scotland's Tom Jordan and Wales' Blair Murray also seen as in the running as replacements. 'Well, he's fit otherwise he wouldn't be picked,' said Farrell when asked about his son's lack of recent rugby after an injury-plagued season with Racing 92. 'I know that the guys have been keeping in close touch with him … and he's been training full ball for quite some time now. 'If he didn't have a chance (of playing), then what's the point,' he added. 'Everyone should be competing. 'That's what everyone in the group would want but along with that the experience brings the support that you need for the group, and again, how you make the room feel.' The versatile Daly, a 72-Test England veteran, was forced off during the second half of the Lions' 52-12 victory over the Reds on Wednesday, with X-rays revealing a fractured forearm. 'It's disappointing for all of us, he's an unbelievably popular bloke amongst the group,' said Farrell. 'So very sad.' It is their second injury setback since arriving in Australia for their nine-match tour on June 22. Experienced Welsh scrumhalf Tomos Williams pulled a hamstring during their opening clash with Western Force and is also out of the tour, with Scotland's Ben White joining the squad as replacement. The first Test is on July 19 in Brisbane, with three more warm-up games before that, starting in Sydney on Saturday against the Waratahs. Ireland's Tadhg Beirne was appointed skipper for the match, with tour captain Maro Itoje given the night off. He is joined in the second row by James Ryan. English pair Alex Mitchell and Fin Smith start at scrumhalf and flyhalf, respectively, with Scottish duo Sione Tuipulotu and Huw Jones in the centres. Hugo Keenan and Blair Kinghorn make their Lions debuts and are joined in the back three by Mack Hansen. 'Don't send our boy to a war zone' – Moeneeb Josephs slams Rele Mofokeng's possible Israel move

Slimkat against potential Israeli move Former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs has cautioned Relebohile Mofokeng against moving to Israel. Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs has urged Relebohile Mofokeng not to entertain any offers from Israeli clubs as the demand for the youngster grows. Two weeks ago, it was reported that Israeli clubs Maccabi Tel Aviv and Maccabi Haifa had reached out to Orlando Pirates with the view of making an offer for the 20-year-old sensation. As a result, they were reportedly given a price of around R31 million to get the deal done. But Josephs, who spent five years at Pirates and also played at the 2010 World Cup in the country, has voiced his concerns about Mofokeng moving to Israel. 'We want the best for our players, and if they move on, they must move on to something better,' Josephs, currently the goalkeeper coach of the Kenya national team, said on the SoccerBeat podcast. He went on to pour cold water on the claim that the move would be good for Mofokeng as the club plays in Europe. 'Don't tell me about the Champions League, these teams that are chasing him are Maccabi Haifa and Tel Aviv, those are the whipping boys of the Champions League,' he continued. 'Rele (Mofokeng) is a star, and stars go to the big leagues. These agents mustn't be greedy because of money and say, 'he is going overseas.' No, there's a difference overseas. 'Don't tell me about Champions League football, (we want) Champions League football where we are going to see our boy shine. 'We want to see our boy in the Bundesligas of the world. We want (him) to play those teams, not knowing that tonight Rele is playing against Real Madrid and they are going to get a hiding,' he said. 'It's difficult to come to a game if you are going to go to those two teams in Israel. You are dodging bombs on your way there. How are you going to focus on the game? It's hard. 'So, send our boy to a safe zone. Send our boy to a place where he can grow. 'That's where we want him to go, and if he doesn't go, we will hold on to him here with no problem, and he is still very young.'
