Mammootty's Care and Share International Foundation launches Vidyamritham-5
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Governor Rajendra Arlekar inaugurated the Vidyamritham- 5 project of actor Mammootty's charitable organisation Care & Share International Foundation to provide free education to students from financially backward families, at the Raj Bhavan here on Monday.
MGM Group chairman Geevarghese Yohannan, who is also the vice-chairman of Care and Share International Foundation, received the logo of the project from the Governor. The launch of the project was also announced by Mammootty through his social media accounts.
Care and Share International Foundation, along with MGM Group, that runs 27 educational institutions, will ensure the higher education of bright students who are unable to pursue it owing to various reasons such as financial backwardness, death of parents or serious illnesses such as cancer in the family.
Under Vidyamritham-5, 250 students will be chosen this year on the basis of their marks in the SSLC and higher secondary exams. In addition to this, another 200 students will be given admission in various CBSE schools of MGM through the project. According to the foundation's chairman K Muraleedharan, students selected as part of the project can pursue various courses in MGM's engineering, polytechnic and pharmacy colleges.

He told me he never saw me as a problematic person—just a mischievous one. Dakshayani Velayudhan, Mammootty find place in Kochi's Maharaja's College syllabus
KOCHI: The life and work of Dakshayani Velayudhan, the first Malayali woman from a scheduled caste community to earn a bachelor's degree and a member of the Constituent Assembly of India, will now feature in the syllabus of the four-year BA honours history course at Maharaja's College, Ernakulam. The decision was made by the college's board of studies. Dakshayani is an alumnus of the college. Besides Dakshayani, another alumnus of Maharaja's College, actor Mammootty, has also been included in the syllabus. 'Mammootty has been included in the major elective 'History of Malayalam Cinema', which second-year history students will start studying this year,' said Zakharia Thangal, history department head. Citing biographies, he said Dakshayani graduated after overcoming various setbacks in an era when casteism was at its height. In the section 'Thinkers and Social Reformers', Malayalam linguist and missionary Arnos Pathiri, reformers belonging to the Jewish community of Kochi — Abraham Salem and S S Koder, social reformer Hamadani Thangal who took the lead in establishing a college for Muslims in Aluva, Tapaswini Amma who worked tirelessly for the education and betterment of women, Kerala's first Muslim woman lawyer Fathima Rahman, Maharaja's' first principal from a backward community P S Velayudhan, among other prominent Kochi residents who did not make it to mainstream history, have also been included.

'He never let go': Shine Tom Chacko on Mammootty's support after father's death in car crash

The actor revealed that superstar Mammootty gave him much support during the hardship. 'Dad gave me a biscuit" The accident occurred on June 6 on the Hosur National Highway near Palakkad. Shine, who was recovering from addiction and on medication to help him sleep, was in the backseat of the car along with his father, mother, and brother. Talking to The Cue the actor said, 'Dad gave me a biscuit, maybe two or three times,' he recalled. 'I was resting… the next time I opened my eyes, the car had already crashed.' Though his mother and brother were injured, they survived, as did the driver. But the emotional scars, Shine says, run far deeper. 'She kept asking, 'Where is Daddy?'" 'The finality didn't strike me at first,' Shine said. 'Until I lost my father, the death of someone else's parent was just another piece of news. That day, I was on the road, crying and pleading for help.' More than his own pain, Shine spoke about his mother's anguish. 'She kept asking, 'Where is Daddy?' even though he was right next to us. I kept lying, saying, 'He's here with us,' just so she could hold on to a little peace.'
