Criminal trials linked to Post Office Horizon scandal could wait until 2028
Criminal trials stemming from the Post Office Horizon scandal might not get underway until 2028, according to the police officer leading the investigation.
Commander Stephen Clayman said police are 'making some real progress' but warned it would take time as they widen the investigation from people 'involved in the immediate decision-making'.
He told the BBC: 'The teams need to be really meticulous and pay attention to detail.
'We are beginning to scope, looking at wider management. That will happen, and is happening, it will just take time to get there.'
The investigation, known as Operation Olympos, is focusing on potential crimes of perjury and perverting the court of justice, linked to the wrongful prosecutions of sub-postmasters and the wider presentation of the Horizon IT system.
Police have said the inquiry is 'unprecedented' in size, with potentially more than 3,000 victims and evidence currently including more than 1.5 million documents that have to be reviewed and forces across the UK involved.
No decision will be made over potential criminal charges until the public inquiry into the scandal has published its final report and investigators have 'thoroughly reviewed' its contents.
It is understood that dozens of people have been classed as persons of interest in the investigation. The investigation has identified seven suspects, according to the BBC.
Former sub-postmaster Tim Brentnall told the BBC victims were 'desperate to see some kind of accountability', but backed the need for police to 'do it properly'.
More than 900 sub-postmasters were prosecuted between 1999 and 2015 after faulty Horizon accounting software made it look as though money was missing from their accounts.
Hundreds are still awaiting compensation despite the previous government saying that those who have had convictions quashed are eligible for £600,000 payouts.
The scandal is one of the most widespread miscarriages of justice in British legal history.
A Post Office spokesperson said: 'Post Office has co-operated fully and openly with the Metropolitan Police since early 2020 to provide whatever information it needs for its investigations.'

Woman, 19, killed in M69 motorbike crash
A woman has been killed in a motorbike crash on the M69 in Leicestershire, police have said. Officers were called to a stretch of the northbound motorway at 00:13 BST on Saturday after reports the 19-year-old rider had come off her bike as she travelled towards Leicester with three other riders. Second murder arrest after water tower body find
Police investigating a man's death have arrested a second murder suspect. The 21-year-old man was detained on Friday evening in Shrewsbury. A 26-year-old man was held earlier in the day following the discovery of a 29-year-old man's body in a disused building near Shelton water tower. Supt Jamie Dunn of West Mercia Police said: "I want to reassure residents that we believe there to be no wider risk to the public, and that those involved are believed to be known to one another." Dog helps police track down illegal vape stashes
Thousands of illegal vapes, cigarettes and tobacco were seized as part of a multi-agency operation. Police officers, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Trading Standards and HMRC were assisted by Wagtail dogs, who were trained to detect tobacco, in the crackdown. During inspections in Ely, Soham and Littleport on Tuesday, 3,171 illegal vapes and 32,000 cigarettes were seized. Some of the vapes had oversized tanks and incorrect labelling, and others had not been notified to the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency. There were also tobacco products without the correct warnings and labelling in English. Over the last two years, Trading Standards has seized about 13,000 illegal vapes and more than 100,000 illegal cigarettes across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Sgt Mat Lupton-Pike, from the East Cambs Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "Illicit cigarettes, vapes and tobacco pose a serious risk to health as well as fuelling funding for other related criminal activity. "We ask the public to continue to report any information or concerns to us. "The more information we have, the more efficient we can be at targeting those causing harm to our communities." Peter Gell, service director, regulatory services for Cambridgeshire County Council said: "These ongoing, targeted enforcement operations send a clear message to the organised crime gangs that the sale of illegal tobacco and nicotine products will not be tolerated in Cambridgeshire, and that Trading Standards, the police and HMRC are committed to taking a hard line with anyone we uncover perpetrating these crimes."
