Commemoration of Nelson Mandela International Day 2025: South African Mission in the State of Kuwait
The Embassy staff was warmly received by officials from MoFA's Human Rights Department and representatives of PAM. During the tour, Ms Mpungose and Embassy staff were briefed on intake procedures and the operational roles of the various governmental institutions supporting the shelter. The delegation observed the wide range of services provided to residents, including legal aid, healthcare, psychological counselling, and social support. PAM officials shared insightful information about the shelter's residents and responded to questions from Ms. Mpungose and Embassy staff. In a spirit of engagement and solidarity, the South African Embassy dedicated 67 minutes, in tribute to Mandela Day, to acts of positivity and social support, including interactive activities with the residents, such as arts and crafts, indoor billiards, and outdoor volleyball, all aimed at promoting unity and well-being of the residents.
As part of the initiative, the Embassy generously also donated clothing items to the shelter to help meet the needs of the residents. Ms Mpungose commended the Government of the State of Kuwait for its ongoing commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals and reaffirmed South Africa's dedication to advancing Mandela's legacy of service and humanity. She concluded by extending warm wishes to His Highness the Amir, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, and His Highness the Crown Prince, Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, and continued peace and prosperity to the State of Kuwait. Ms Mpungose and the Embassy staff expressed their sincere admiration for the shelter's resolute staff and their commitment to providing protection, care, and legal support to vulnerable women.

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 4: The General Secretariat of Awqaf (Endowments) announced on Monday that it is allocating half a million Kuwaiti dinars (approximately USD 1.6 million) from endowment proceeds to support the national campaign aimed at aiding the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip. This initiative, titled 'Fazza for Gaza - Kuwait is by Your Side,' was launched by the Ministry of Social Affairs in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS), and the Kuwait Zakat House. In a statement to KUNA, Acting Secretary General of the Awqaf Secretariat, Amal Al-Dallal, emphasized that this contribution is part of Kuwait's ongoing commitment to fulfilling the pledges made by donors and reflecting the humanitarian mission of the endowment. Al-Dallal further noted that the contribution is designed to support the distressed and assist those in need. Over KD1 mln collected for Gaza in hours
KUWAIT CITY, Aug 3: The relief campaign for the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip was launched under the directives of the wise political leadership and reflects Kuwait's commitment to supporting the Palestinian people and providing urgent humanitarian aid. So far, the 'Gaza Relief: Kuwait by Your Side' campaign has raised KD1,080,440 in donations from around 29,000 donors – an affirmation of the deep-rooted humanitarian and solidarity values in Kuwaiti society. Iman Al-Enezi, acting Director of the Charitable Societies and Endowments Department at the Ministry of Social Affairs, announced the launch of the campaign on Sunday morning. Al-Enezi revealed in a statement to Al- Akhbar Channel that the campaign is in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the participation of the Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS) and more than 51 accredited charities. She said a special link for donations had been opened, as announced by the ministry on its social media platforms, while praising the great response the campaign has been witnessing since its launch. She added that this campaign is an urgent response to the escalating humanitarian needs in the Gaza Strip, to provide food, medical supplies, and relief support to those affected. She disclosed that fundraising will continue until Tuesday through official channels approved by each participating organization. She clarified that at the end of the campaign, participating societies and charities are required to purchase food supplies exclusively from the Kuwait Flour Mills and Bakeries Company, according to Cabinet Resolution No. 1461. She said all in-kind donations will be handed over to KRCS; which will be responsible for delivering them to the areas surrounding Palestine, in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense through the air bridge designated for this purpose. She also stressed that this initiative, implemented under the directives of the political leadership, is supported directly by Minister of Social, Family and Childhood Affairs Dr. Amthal Al-Huwailah.

‘Win-win' and still pushing: Reactions to Trump tariffs
PARIS: Some nations reacted with relief Friday after US President Donald Trump announced tariffs that in some cases were lower than threatened, and delayed by a week to August 7. But others — including Switzerland and chip powerhouse Taiwan — still hope to negotiate lower rates, and uncertainty remains over transshipments and levies on Japanese cars. Trump's announcement does not cover export giant China — currently in negotiations on a trade deal ahead of an August 12 deadline. Here is how some other economies reacted: Canada Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney said his government was 'disappointed' by Trump's decision to increase US tariffs on Canadian goods to 35 percent. Trump's order cited Canada's failure to stop fentanyl entering the United States. Carney outlined Ottawa's efforts to crack down on fentanyl and to increase border security. He said sectors of Canada's economy including lumber, steel, aluminium and automobiles were 'heavily impacted by US duties and tariffs'. Switzerland The government of Switzerland — a major US trading partner — expressed 'great regret' at the 39-percent tariff rate, despite its 'very constructive position' in talks. It said it 'still hopes to find a negotiated solution' to the dispute over the US trade deficit with Switzerland. South Africa South Africa will use the week-long delay of 30-percent tariffs to 'negotiate as strongly and as hard as we can' to avoid the penalty and save jobs, President Cyril Ramaphosa told reporters. South Africa has offered to import liquefied natural gas and some US agricultural products, the trade ministry said this week. Washington 'needs Taiwan in supporting resilient supply chains, in supporting manufacturing and some high-end technologies,' Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim said recently. Japan A tariff of 15 percent agreed last week between Japan and Washington — down from a threatened 25 percent — is due to be applied from August 7. But Japanese auto exports were already being hit by a 25-percent rate, and Tokyo wants to know when this will be lowered too. 'We continue to urge the US to take prompt measures to implement the agreement, including lowering tariffs on automobile and auto parts,' Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said Friday. Confusion also surrounds Trump's claim that Japan — as a 'signing bonus' — will invest $550 billion in America, which will recoup 90 percent of the profits. Malaysia Malaysia also achieved a lower tariff of 19 percent — down from 25 percent — which the government called a 'positive outcome'. 'This decision by the United States reflects the strong and enduring economic ties between our two nations,' Trade and Industry Minister Zafrul Abdul Aziz said. Sri Lanka Sri Lanka also expressed relief that it will face a 20-percent hit, a sharp reduction from the 44 percent originally floated, and expressed hope of a further cut. 'We are happy that our competitiveness in exports to the US has been retained,' finance ministry official Harshana Suriyapperuma told reporters.
