Shock World Cup warning for England power pair Luke Littler and Luke Humphries

Daily Record22-05-2025
Red-hot English favourites not guaranteed to fire says Vincent van der Voort
Power pair Luke Littler and Luke Humphries have been handed a shock World Cup warning.
The two best players on the planet are red-hot favourites to win darts' showpiece team event in Frankfurt next month.

Humphries, who won 12 months ago alongside partner Michael Smith, is confident he and Littler can do the business. But ex-Dutch World Cup ace Vincent ver Doort is convinced his nation can pull off a shock success. Michael van Gerwen has opted to go on holiday leaving Danny Noppert and Gian van Veen to try and get the job done for their country.

But van der Voort said: 'If both of them play well, they absolutely can beat England. It's all pairs matches, after all, which is different to singles. A strong partnership becomes even more important. Individual talent comes second. That's what determines whether you're a good team or not. You can't just assume two good players automatically make a good pair.'
Speaking on the Darts Draait Door podcast, he added: 'I really like the World Cup of Darts because you get to see a wide range of countries and players. But I'm not exactly excited about Littler and Humphries as a duo. I'm not curious to see what they'll do. You just expect them to win. You hope there are a few countries that can really push them. Because if this is the new standard, it's going to be very tough for everyone else. There aren't many nations who stand a real chance against them.'
Scotland Gary Anderson and Peter Wright and Wales' Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton are other formidable duops facing the nuclear Lukes. Humphries said: 'The two best players in the world, a lot of pressure is going to be on our shoulders. I think everybody is expecting us to win it and no one's going to touch us. There are great teams in there. The likes of Gezzy and Jonny are a potential banana skin. Gian is playing really well. Him and Danny, if they get going, that's a tough team. Gary and Peter, Peter's playing better again now. But if me and Luke gel and everything goes well, it's going to be an incredibly tough performance to beat us both.'

John Arne Riise reveals one concern over Liverpool's move for Alexander Isak

John Arne Riise says he would 'love' to see Alexander Isak join Liverpool this summer, but has some reservations about the club coughing up Newcastle's 'extremely high' asking price for the striker. Speculation over Isak's future had appeared to have cooled over the course of the summer, but there was a major twist last month as the forward informed Newcastle of his desire to explore a move away from St James' Park. Liverpool were quickly alerted to a potential deal and saw an opening offer of £110million plus add-ons knocked back by the Magpies, who are refusing to be bullied into an agreement for their prized possession. Isak was pictured training alone with former side Real Sociedad following the failed bid, with Newcastle boss Eddie Howe claiming the Swede had to 'earn the right' to join up with his squad again. And while Isak returned to training with the Toon on Monday, the Premier League champions are expected to return with a follow-up proposal for the 25-year-old attacker in due course. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – click here and sign up before Friday to make sure you don't miss the first edition. It's understood Newcastle have identified RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko as their top target should Isak complete a switch to Anfield. 'It's been the talk of the summer. Some days you think, 'Yeah, he's going to sign,' and other days you think, 'No chance',' ex-Liverpool star Riise told 'What's exciting is his movement – he's quick, he's a great finisher, he's hungry. 'But you read so many stories from people who think they know everything, but they don't have the answers. 'Newcastle will be tough to convince. This one might come down to what Isak himself says to the club. But it's all about money, isn't it? Newcastle are in a strong position. They know clubs want him. 'At the same time, do you want to keep an unhappy player at your club? If they decide not to sell because the price isn't met, how will he perform next season for Newcastle? Because we all know he wants to leave.' But with Newcastle reportedly demanding an eye-watering fee of £150m for Isak, Riise questions whether paying such a price would be 'worth it' for Liverpool. 'I'd love to get him at Liverpool, but the price will be extremely high. If it's worth it? I don't know,' the 2005 Champions League winner added. 'It would be an amazing signing for Liverpool, but right now it looks difficult as they've already rejected so many offers. Time will tell!' Despite doubts over Isak's price, Riise is confident the Sweden international could prove to be Liverpool's 'missing link' up front should he wind up on Merseyside. 'I think he'd suit Liverpool's style perfectly – because of his movement, his runs in behind and his finishing,' Riise continued. 'Look at Darwin Nunez, in the last couple of years, he's had so many chances from making those runs. 'If Nunez had a bit more luck – or composure – in front of goal, he'd have scored an unbelievable amount. 'I think Alexander Isak is a step up. He's calmer, more deadly in front of goal, and maybe smarter with his movement. 'So I think Isak fits Liverpool better – especially with the way we play. I get why Liverpool are going all in for him. 'He could be that missing link up front.' Riise has been impressed by Florian Wirtz's early showings in Liverpool colours, but believes the Premier League represents an altogether different challenge to what the German will have previously experienced in his career. 'Look at what he's done at Leverkusen – he's unbelievable,' the former Norway full-back went on. 'But coming to the Premier League is a different step. The speed, sharpness, and quality here is another level — both in your team and your opposition. So it's a different ballgame. 'The money spent on him makes sense because every club wanted him. I think he fits perfectly in terms of vision, technique, and style. 'Even in pre-season, you could see how he's trying to find Mo Salah between the lines with his passing. 'That's why I think Isak would also be perfect – the connection between them would be special.' Riise is 'so excited' for the upcoming season and 'can't see anyone else' threatening Liverpool's defence of the Premier League title. More Trending He added: 'I'm so excited for this season. Honestly, I don't think I've been this excited about a Liverpool season before. 'Last year there were no big signings – but this year, even without winning the Premier League, the signings are unbelievable. 'Expectations are high – from the ex-players, the fans, and the whole football world. 'I can't see anybody else winning the Premier League other than Liverpool this season. When you look at what they did last season and the signings they've made this summer, I can't see how Liverpool won't be up there at the end of the season.' Is Alexander Isak worth £150m? Earlier this summer, Morrison pleaded with bosses of English sides to ignore his wild reputation and give him a chance. The former England youth international told The Athletic: "I do believe I can play in the Championship — easy. The frustrating thing is I'm not getting the opportunity. Former Arsenal player Thomas Partey granted conditional bail

The Ghanaian midfielder, 32, has been charged with five counts of rape against two women, as well as a charge of sexual assault against a third woman. The alleged offences took place between 2021 and 2022, when he was an Arsenal player. Partey stood with his arms behind his back in the dock at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, wearing a black zip-neck jumper. The footballer, who gave his address as Potters Bar, showed no reaction as the charges were read out and was not asked to enter any pleas. The alleged offences include incidents of anal rape, the court heard. His bail conditions include that he cannot contact any of the three women and must notify police of any permanent changes of address or international travel. It comes amid reports that Partey is set to join Spanish club Villarreal. As bail conditions were discussed in court, Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring said: 'I understand he's no longer employed in this country and playing in Spain now.' Partey is due to appear at the Old Bailey on September 2. He was charged four days after leaving Arsenal when his contract expired at the end of June. A spokeswoman for Arsenal Supporters Against Sexual Violence said they were 'profoundly disappointed' in the north London club for their handling of the matter. Speaking outside court, Honor Barber told the PA news agency: 'We never wanted to be in a situation where the club that we love and the club that has values that we believe in was playing, week-in week-out, a player who is now facing court appearances on six counts of sexual violence. 'We protested outside almost every home game last season because we wanted to disrupt the wall of silence that the club has put up around this issue, and we did that because we want to support our club and feel happy and comfortable supporting our club.' Members of the group held a banner which read 'Arsenal said: 'We do the right thing' then did nothing'. Ms Barber said the group wanted Arsenal to publish their sexual violence policies, 'suspend anyone under investigation for sexual offences' and 'properly support the survivors'. The Metropolitan Police said it first received reports of an allegation of rape in February 2022. Partey's lawyer Jenny Wiltshire previously said he 'denies all the charges against him', adding he welcomed 'the opportunity to finally clear his name'. He joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in 2020 in a transfer worth around £45 million. The defensive midfielder signed for the Spanish club in 2012 and made 188 appearances, as well as going out on loan to Mallorca and Leganes. He played 35 games for the north London club in the Premier League last season, scoring four goals. Partey has also made more than 50 appearances for Ghana including at the World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations. An Arsenal spokesperson previously said: 'The player's contract ended on June 30. Due to ongoing legal proceedings the club is unable to comment on the case.'
