U.S. trading firm Jane Street Group allegedly manipulated Indian equity indices by targeting over 40 constituent stocks of the Nifty 50 and Bank Nifty, deploying aggressive expiry-day strategies that netted massive gains, according to a Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) order that barred the firm from Indian securities markets on Friday. The market regulator's order, running 105 pages, outlined how the proprietary trading firm executed high-volume trades to distort index levels, misleading other market participants and profiting from large index options positions. The firm and four of its affiliates have been barred from accessing Indian securities markets, and Sebi has ordered the impounding of Rs 4,840 crore in alleged illegal gains.Sebi's probe identified 18 expiry-day sessions, 15 involving Bank Nifty and three involving Nifty 50, during which Jane Street allegedly engaged in 'sharp, large, and aggressive interventions' across cash, futures, and options markets. These trades, SEBI said, influenced index levels and options pricing to the firm's advantage.Among the Bank Nifty stocks involved were HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, State Bank of India, Kotak Mahindra Bank, IndusInd Bank, Federal Bank, Bank of Baroda, IDFC First Bank, AU Small Finance Bank, Punjab National Bank, Canara Bank, and Bandhan Bank. The strategy extended to a broader basket of Nifty 50 constituents, particularly on expiry days in May 2025.Sebi listed trades involving Reliance Industries, Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services, HDFC Life, ITC, Larsen & Toubro, and Kotak Mahindra Bank, among others. In all, the firm allegedly executed trades in over 40 index stocks, including names such as Adani Enterprises, Bajaj Finance, Coal India, HCL Technologies, Hindustan Unilever, JSW Steel, Maruti Suzuki, ONGC, Power Grid, Sun Pharma, and Tata Steel.Sebi's order highlighted January 17, 2024, as Jane Street's single most profitable day in Indian markets, a session where the firm allegedly made Rs 735 crore using what the regulator called an 'Intra-day Index Manipulation' strategy. The Bank Nifty index opened significantly lower that morning at 46,573.95 versus the previous close of 48,125.10. Sebi noted that media reports attributed the drop to weak earnings from HDFC Bank the previous evening. The firm allegedly responded with a two-patch strategy. In 'Patch I,' Jane Street aggressively bought Rs 4,370 crore worth of Bank Nifty constituents and futures, pushing prices up and creating the impression of a recovery. SEBI said that 'at a time when participants in index options markets are misled by the above support for Nifty Bank, JS Group builds effectively Rs 32,114.96 crores of bearish positions in the much more liquid Nifty Bank index options by buying cheap Put options and selling expensive Call options.'In 'Patch II,' the firm reversed these purchases. 'The sales are aggressive, in a manner that pushes down prices in the component stocks and hence index. JS Group books losses in intraday cash/ futures market trading,' Sebi noted. However, the losses in equities were vastly outpaced by profits in the options market, as put options surged in value.'Profits in index options more than compensate for the JS Group's losses in intraday cash/futures trading,' the Sebi order said.Sebi found that Jane Street used this intra-day strategy on 15 of the 18 expiry days it reviewed, while the remaining three involved a different 'Extended Marking the Close' approach, also observed in trades in May 2025, even after Sebi had issued a cautionary notice to the firm.'JS Group continued with similar trades, in disregard of the caution letter from the Exchange… and JS Group's own commitments,' SEBI said, adding that the firm was 'aware that Nifty Bank was almost certainly likely to fall again by the end of the day, given their intent to aggressively sell back all of their morning purchases (and more).'Other market participants, meanwhile, 'were unaware of all this, and were hence enticed to deal at a time that the Nifty Bank itself was being artificially and temporarily propped up,' the regulator said.Sebi's order names four Jane Street entities — JSI Investments Pvt Ltd, JSI2 Investments Pvt Ltd, Jane Street Singapore Pte Ltd, and Jane Street Asia Trading Ltd — which are now banned from buying, selling, or dealing in securities, directly or indirectly. Banks have been directed to freeze all debit transactions from the group's accounts. The regulator said Jane Street earned Rs 36,502 crore in total profits between January 2023 and March 2025, of which Rs 43,289 crore came from index options. These were partly offset by Rs 7,687 crore in losses across cash and futures trades.Sebi also drew attention to broader imbalances in India's derivatives markets, where institutional and proprietary traders, often using high-frequency strategies, dominate gains while retail traders absorb equivalent losses. The order said that Jane Street 'was consistently running what appeared to be by far the largest risks in 'cash equivalent' terms in F&O particularly on index option expiry days.' What made the firm's strategy stand out, Sebi said, was 'the intensity and sheer scale of their intervention in the underlying component stock and futures markets.'(Disclaimer: Recommendations, suggestions, views and opinions given by the experts are their own. Geopolitical winds set to sweeten India's apple harvest

Live Events (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel New Delhi: An apple a day - but at a price set by geopolitics. With Turkey Iran and Afghanistan emerging as the top three apple import sources for India, shifting geopolitical dynamics are expected to play an outsized role in shaping prices this harvest season, beginning in Delhi's Azadpur Fruit and Vegetable Market - arguably Asia's largest - traders may continue to steer clear of imports from Turkey, which was India's largest apple supplier last fiscal year with shipments worth $97 million. The reluctance stems from prevailing negative sentiment toward Ankara over its active support for Islamabad during the recent India-Pakistan conflict, two traders have told the challenge is the continued closure of the Attari-Wagah border between India and Pakistan since May has effectively halted the entry of apples from Afghanistan - typically the most affordable among all imported varieties - into the Indian market. The disruption may contribute to a rise in prices of domestic apples from Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, whose harvest peaks between August and October, when traders will buy and store the apples for the months to come."Apples from Afghanistan, which are sold for Rs 40-65 per kg in the wholesale market, are cheaper than Kashmir or Himachal apples, which cost between Rs 60 and Rs 90 per kg," says Pawan Chhabra, fruit merchant and owner of Adarsh Fruits.'Production costs in Afghanistan are extremely low, and on top of that, the imports are duty-free under an agreement (South Asia Free Trade Area agreement),' he says, adding that he won't be surprised if the cost of domestic apples rises in the upcoming season.'While the conflict in Iran has paused for now, many importers remain cautious about sourcing Iranian apples due to the high risks involved,' says another fruit importer, requesting anonymity. 'In recent years, most Indian importers have operated more like commission agents for Iranian exporters, earning a cut of 4-6% on each sale.'While apple production in India — primarily concentrated in Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh — is estimated at around 2.4 million metric tonnes, domestic consumption exceeds this output. Just last financial year, India imported 34,000 tonnes of apples valued at $450 million, a 12% year-on-year rise in terms of value.

Why slowing, uneven growth in housing sector indicates subdued demand

India's housing sector may be booming on the surface, but it's increasingly becoming a market for the few. Even as home sales hit a 12-year high of 3.5 lakh units in 2024, much of the growth came from the premium segment, and was indicative of a deep divide in the sector: while developers target affluent buyers, homeownership is increasingly out of reach for a large section of the population. But even as sales in India's top-seven cities fell 24 per cent year-on-year in the first half of 2025 and new launches dropped 13 per cent, developers continued with their premium push, according to real estate services firm Anarock. In April-June, the share of new launches priced above Rs 1.5 crore increased to 46 per cent from 43 per cent in the previous quarter, while the share of affordable homes — those priced below Rs 40 lakh — remained steady at 12 per cent. While affordable metrics have improved in 2025 owing to the 100 basis points (bps) of repo rate cuts by the RBI since February, the gain has been offset by rising property prices, especially in cities like Kolkata, Chennai, and Ahmedabad. K-shaped growth The tilt in housing supply toward the upper end is evident in the segment-wise composition of new launches. As per Anarock, in April-June, the mid (Rs 40 lakh-80 lakh) and premium segments (Rs 80 lakh-1.5 crore) together made up 42 per cent of new supply, down from 45 per cent in January-March, as the share of homes priced above Rs 1.5 crore rose, indicating a bias toward higher-value projects. This is not to say that there are no buyers for affordable homes. According to real estate consultancy Knight Frank India, homes priced below Rs 1 crore accounted for 54 per cent of total sales in January-March, with almost a quarter of total sales coming from homes priced below Rs 50 lakh. However, this was down from 60 per cent in Q1 of 2024. As a result of the shift in supply, 52 per cent of housing inventory at the end of March were either high-end (Rs 80 lakh to Rs 1.5 crore) or luxury and ultra luxury (above Rs 1.5 crore), while homes prices below Rs 40 lakh made up just a fifth of total stock, according to Anarock. It is no surprise then that the mood among buyers is not upbeat, with property selling platform Magicbricks' Housing Sentiment Index (HSI) falling to 138 in April from 155 in September 2024. 'The Rs 3.5 crore-5 crore and Rs 2.5 crore-3.5 crore segments recorded the highest HSI, driven by buyers with Rs 1 cr+ annual income,' Magicbricks said. Affordability question Except Delhi NCR, buying a home has seemingly become easier so far in 2025 in seven of the eight major cities in the country, as per the Knight Frank's Affordability Index. For instance, the index for Mumbai improved to 48 per cent in the first half of 2025 from 67 per cent in 2019 and 50 per cent in 2024, implying that a homeowner now needs to spend 48 per cent of their income to finance the Equated Monthly Instalment. But even at 48 per cent, the affordability index for Mumbai is only a shade under Knight Frank's threshold of 50 per cent it considers as unaffordable. Other cities such as Kolkata and Chennai saw a marginal 1-percentage-point improvement in affordability to 23 per cent and 24 per cent, respectively, while the index for Ahmedabad improved to 18 per cent from 20 per cent. However, prices are rising faster in these smaller centres. Data from the RBI's All-India House Price Index shows that housing prices increased 3.1 per cent year-on-year in January-March at the national level. Cities such as Kolkata, Chennai, and Ahmedabad, however, saw prices rise at a faster clip of 8.8 per cent, 7.2 per cent, and 3.8 per cent, respectively. Weakening demand The situation has become sufficiently worrisome for policymakers to address it, with home loan growth, often a bellwether of the economy, having slowed down. Excluding the impact of the merger of HDFC Bank with Housing Development Finance Corporation, latest RBI data shows home loans rose 13.8 per cent year-on-year as of May 30, slower than the 19.9 per cent growth recorded a year earlier. Loans to housing finance companies, meanwhile, were down 6.8 per cent over the same period, compared to a 3.8 per cent growth recorded at the end of May 2024. 'Urban demand and demand for housing, vehicles, and other goods that are sensitive to interest rates are not at a level we would like them to be. Due to this, private capex is not showing robust signs of revival,' Ram Singh, one of the external members on the RBI's Monetary Policy Committee, told The Indian Express on June 25. DJB Regains Financial Powers To Independently Execute Major Projects

New Delhi: Delhi Jal Board will now be able to independently execute capital-intensive projects without depending on the Delhi cabinet to approve them, chief minister Rekha Gupta said on Saturday. Gupta said the govt has restored the financial powers of DJB, which were taken away by the previous govt in the 2021-22 financial year. This will help in expediting high-cost projects such as the rejuvenation of the Yamuna, sewage treatment, and improvement of regular drinking water supply. She added that the financial powers of DJB's chairperson, chief executive officer, and other senior officials have also been significantly increased. Gupta emphasised that the enhancement in the board's powers was aimed at making governance more efficient, responsive, and effective. The previous govt stripped the DJB of all its financial powers, which brought critical works—like Yamuna cleaning, modern drainage systems, and water supply projects—to a standstill. The board will now be authorised to sanction all projects over Rs 50 crore independently. While the DJB chairperson (water minister) can approve projects worth Rs 25-50 crore, the CEO has the power to clear projects costing between Rs 5 crore and Rs 25 crore, and the members can give their sanction to projects worth up to Rs 5 crore. Officials said the senior officers will also have enhanced financial powers now. "This will lead to better decision-making at every level of the board and reduce unnecessary delays in execution," said an official. The CM said Yamuna cleaning plans remained only on paper for a long time due to the cumbersome and lengthy approval processes, but the bottleneck has now been removed. "Our govt is committed to delivering result-oriented governance, not entangling people in paperwork," the CM said. She added that the functioning of the DJB has now been made more transparent and accountable, which will reduce the chances of corruption and ensure responsibility at every level.
