Despite brief military conflict, India-Pakistan trade persisted in May
The official data showed that
imports from India
reached a three-year high during July-May FY25, Dawn reported quoting the data of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).
It showed that imports from India totalled USD 211.5 million in the first 11 months of FY25 - surpassing USD 207m in FY24 and USD 190m in FY23.

In May alone - when the four-day conflict broke out in the first week-imports stood at USD 15 million, slightly down from USD 17 million in the same month last year.
However, Pakistan's exports to India remained negligible.
Live Events
In May, exports to India were recorded at just USD 1,000, while total exports during July-May FY25 were only USD 0.5 million.
In FY24 and FY23, exports stood at USD 3.44 million and USD 0.33 million, respectively-highlighting the highly one-sided nature of
bilateral trade
.
Formal trade relations between Pakistan and India have suffered since 2019. However, after the April 22
Pahalgam terror attack
that claimed 26 lives, India took a series of measures, including immediate shutting down of the Attari land-transit post, used for movement of certain kinds of goods.
In retaliation, Pakistan too announced that "all trade with India, including to and from any third country through Pakistan, is suspended forthwith."
Traders were reluctant to discuss the continuation of imports during the tense period. However, one trader suggested: "It may have come from a third country and the payment for the May imports would have been made before the war."
Although official data reflects limited trade, some research institutions claim the actual trade is far higher. "India's unofficial exports to Pakistan are estimated at USD 10 billion annually, routed primarily through Dubai, Colombo, and Singapore," Dawn said quoting a research body.
Analysts said the unofficial trade remains robust due to Pakistan's high cost of production and industrial dependence on foreign inputs. "We should not ignore smuggling from India since the cost of production in Pakistan is the highest in the region, which creates space for goods from India, China, and Bangladesh," said an exporter.

UAE rolls out new golden visa: Lifetime residency at Rs 23 lakh, India among first to benefit
NEW DELHI: In a major shift from its traditional investment-based residency model, the United Arab Emirates has introduced a new nomination-based Golden Visa, offering eligible Indians lifetime residency in the country by paying a one-time fee of AED 1,00,000 (approximately Rs 23.3 lakh), without the need to invest in property or business. Until now, Indian nationals were eligible for the UAE's coveted Golden Visa primarily through high-value investments, including a minimum AED 2 million (Rs 4.66 crore) in property. But under this new system, applicants can be nominated and approved based on their professional background, societal contributions, or potential benefits to UAE's sectors such as culture, trade, science, startups, or finance. The pilot phase of the initiative has been launched for India and Bangladesh, with over 5,000 Indian applicants expected in the first three months, according to officials involved in the process. Rayad Group, the consultancy firm selected to pilot the nomination-based Golden Visa in India, is leading the process in partnership with VFS and One Vasco centres across India and Bangladesh. Applications can also be submitted through the group's online portal and call centre. "This is a golden opportunity for Indians," said Rayad Kamal Ayub, Managing Director of Rayad Group. He explained that the vetting process includes anti-money laundering checks, criminal background verification, and social media screening. Approved visa holders can bring family members, employ staff, and engage in business or professional activities. Unlike property-based visas, which lapse upon property sale, the nomination-based Golden Visa is permanent. This initiative reflects the UAE's growing economic and strategic ties with India following the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) signed in 2022. The program is expected to expand to other CEPA partner countries, including China, in later phases. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays . t, Indian business could create economic value worth $9.82 trillion. (AI image) India's economy could grow leaps and bounds in the coming years, estimates PwC India in a new report. The analysis projects India's total GVA to increase from $3.39 trillion in 2023 to $9.82 trillion in 2035, representing a CAGR of 9.27%. GVA or Gross Value Added serves as a measurement of the economy's goods and services production value, functioning as an economic performance and productivity indicator used in GDP calculations after tax and subsidy adjustments. According to the report, Indian business could create economic value worth $9.82 trillion by shifting from conventional sector-specific approaches to addressing core human and industrial requirements. The PwC report titled 'Navigating the Value Shift' indicates that Indian companies can achieve $9.82 trillion in GVA by 2035 through engagement in nine growth domains, according to ET. According to PwC's 28th Annual Global CEO Survey: India perspective released in January 2025, "40% of India CEOs stated that their companies have entered at least one new sector in the past five years, with half of them generating up to 20% of their revenue from these new ventures," notes Sanjeev Krishan, Chairperson, PwC in India according to ET. He emphasises that organisations need to adopt a structured approach to diversification, focusing on domain-specific strategies rather than sector-based methods to enhance capabilities, foster ecosystem partnerships and develop sustainable business models. The analysis highlights nine distinct domains, encompassing various aspects of production, construction, healthcare and transportation. The manufacturing and industrial production segment, categorised under "How we make", could emerge as a significant contributor, with potential growth from $945 billion in 2023 to approximately $2.7 trillion in GVA by 2035. This expansion is anticipated to be supported by technological advancements, automated processes and increased focus on sophisticated manufacturing techniques. Also Read | Big jobs boost! The analysis employs input-output matrices to map sectors to domains, revealing value flow patterns and strongest alignments.
