Perak police advise bus driver in UPSI crash to hold off on public comments pending probe; dashcam footage of accident sent for analysis

Malay Mail11-06-2025

IPOH, June 11 — Perak police have advised the bus driver involved in the tragic crash that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students to refrain from making any further public statements until his official statement is recorded.
Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said any premature public comments by the driver could jeopardise the ongoing investigation and potentially fuel unwarranted speculation.
'While he has the right to speak, we recommend he waits until we officially record his statement.
'This case involves multiple dimensions, including the bus company, road conditions, and various technical aspects.
'It is crucial that we allow the authorities to carry out their investigation thoroughly before drawing any conclusions.
'The final findings will be made public once the investigation is complete,' he told reporters during a press conference at the Perak police headquarters.
Noor Hisam added that the police have not yet remanded the driver, pending his discharge from hospital.
Yesterday, the driver, Mohd Amirul Fadhil Zulkifle, publicly apologised for the incident and denied allegations that he had been speeding.
Speaking to Harian Metro, the driver claimed the crash was the result of a sudden brake failure while descending a hilly section of the East-West Highway near the elephant crossing bridge in Gerik.
According to Mohd Amirul, he did his best to prevent the bus from crashing into other vehicles as it sped downhill uncontrollably.
Separately, Noor Hisam said the police have recorded statements from 18 individuals in relation to the crash.
'This includes 13 injured students, the driver of a red Perodua Alza and his wife, two forensic doctors from Gerik Hospital, and a witness who captured the incident in a viral dashcam recording,' he said.
He also noted that the authorities are investigating the authenticity of the dashcam footage circulating online.
'Many have questioned whether the bus shown in the footage is the actual vehicle involved. The video is not very clear and could be challenged. Verification is still ongoing.
'We need experts to confirm the authenticity and whether the location and vehicle match the incident in question,' he explained.
Noor Hisam confirmed that there is only one dashcam recording available so far, and a statement has been taken from the vehicle's owner.
'The video will be sent for forensic verification which will be handled by another agency as it falls outside our jurisdiction,' he added.
He also urged the public to act responsibly and avoid spreading unverified or potentially harmful content about the tragedy.
'This is a heartbreaking and sensitive event. We should be expressing sympathy and support, not seeking attention through sensational posts,' he said.
He also said initial inspections of the bus by Puspakom have yet to yield conclusive findings.
The fatal crash occurred early Monday morning when the bus carrying the UPSI students overturned at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB), near Tasik Banding in Gerik, killing 15 students.

No VEP, no exit: Malaysia to fine and hold Singapore vehicles without entry permit starting tomorrow

JOHOR BARU, June 30 — From tomorrow, Singaporean vehicles entering Malaysia without a valid Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) will face an immediate RM300 compound, as full enforcement at the Malaysia-Singapore land border kicks in. The enforcement is in line with Section 66H(7) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333), which states that it is an offence for anyone to drive a foreign-registered vehicle without a permit when entering or being present in Malaysia. According to Transport Minister Anthony Loke on June 4, the implementation of the VEP system is crucial not only for cross-border traffic control but also for enhancing the enforcement of road laws on foreign vehicles. Failure to comply with the requirement may result in the vehicle being barred from exiting Malaysia until the compound is settled and the VEP tag activated. All foreign vehicles entering Malaysia via the Johor Causeway and the Second Link are required to register through the portal, pay a RM10 fee for the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) VEP sticker valid for five years, and settle a RM20 Road Charge for each entry. According to information on the official website, vehicles registered under the VEP system will receive a non-transferable RFID tag with a unique identification code for each vehicle, valid for five years. For individual private vehicle owners who have only completed pre-registration, a summons will be issued and the vehicle will not be allowed to leave Malaysia until the payment is made. For company-owned vehicles, a notice will be issued if only pre-registration has been done, while compounds will be imposed for those with no registration at all. Compounds can only be paid via cashless methods at Road Transport Department (JPJ) counters, mobile JPJ trucks, or online platforms such as MyEG. The Transport Ministry said that since Oct 1, 2024, the VEP implementation has been carried out in phases through an advocacy approach, with reminder notices issued to Singaporean vehicle owners who have not registered. As of June 2, a total of 231,018 VEP stickers had been issued to private and company-owned vehicles from Singapore, but only 194,507 were installed and activated, while 36,511 or about 15.8 per cent remained inactive. Between Oct 1, 2024 and May 31 this year, a total of 52,012 vehicles were inspected, with 2,245 reminder notices issued to owners who had yet to complete the activation process. Meanwhile, checks by Bernama at a shopping mall in Skudai that also serves as a VEP registration centre today found that many Singaporean vehicle owners were making last-minute efforts to complete their registration. A private sector employee from Singapore, Jia Hui, 34, said she understood the need for Malaysia to implement the VEP system for safety and cross-border traffic management. 'As a Singaporean vehicle owner who frequently travels to Johor for family matters and shopping, I do hope the verification and tag installation process can be made more convenient, especially for those who work in Malaysia,' she said. Another Singaporean, Amira Natasha Osman, 26, expressed relief that more VEP centres had been opened at various locations. 'At least now we have more options to register and get the tag without overcrowding or having to wait too long,' she said. — Bernama

Former admin assistant jailed, fined for CBT involving RM41,000 in Felda settlers death benefits

KUANTAN, June 30 — A former administrative assistant was today sentenced to three months' jail and a fine of RM20,000, in default six months in prison, by the Sessions Court here for criminal breach of trust (CBT) involving more than RM41,000 in death benefits of seven Felda settlers. Judge Sazlina Safie meted out the sentence on Nurul Syafiha Awang Za, 36, after she pleaded guilty to the charge. The judge ordered Nurul Syafiha to serve the jail sentence from today. The woman, who was then with the Felda office here, was charged as a person entrusted by one Roslan Kumin with RM41,652.42 in cash to be given as death benefits to the next of kin of seven Felda Sungai Panching settlers, to have committed CBT by dishonestly using the money for her personal use. The offence was committed at the Felda Sungai Panching Timur Office here between February 2018 and 2019. The mother of three was charged under Section 406 of the Penal Code, which provides imprisonment for not more than 10 years with whipping and is liable to a fine upon conviction. Prosecuting officer Kamariah Seman, from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), appeared for the prosecution, while Nurul Syafiha was represented by lawyer Datuk Syed Azimal Amir Syed Abu Bakar. — Bernama

Sabah reps charged with bribery for mining licences say will prove innocence in court, focus remains on serving voters

KOTA KINABALU, June 30 — Faced with corruption charges in connection with mining licences, elected Sabah representatives Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob and Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy today, affirmed their focus to serve their constituents even as they commit to prove their innocence in court. Dr Yusof, who is Sindumin assemblyman, described the charges as a public humiliation due to the media coverage, but is confident that he can clear his name through the judicial process. 'We have been humiliated a lot in the media and through this process we will clear our name through the court. We are confident in the justice system and the court process in this country. 'A person is innocent until proven guilty so we do not want this to bother us and we focus on our duties as representatives of the people to serve the area and also other duties,' he told reporters outside the Kota Kinabalu courthouse today after posting bail. Andi, who is Tanjung Batu assemblyman and assistant minister of industrial development and entrepreneurship, similarly said he is innocent of the charges and will fight them in the trial. 'I want to say again, I am not guilty and will follow all procedures in this court that uphold the rule of law in our country and I am confident that the legal process will run transparently,' he said. Both men earlier claimed trial to charges of receiving bribes totalling RM350,000 from businessman Datuk Albert Tei in exchange for helping secure approval for a mineral prospecting licence. Dr Yusof was charged with receiving RM200,000 in cash in March 2023, while Andi was accused of receiving RM150,000 in May 2023.
