As the UK recovers from a roasting heatwave, the thoughts of many are turning to getting a quality fan in preparation for the rest of the summer. Working from a south-facing dormer adorned with French doors, my own home office rapidly becomes a greenhouse as soon as sunlight filters through.
Shark's new FlexBreeze HydroGo misting fan is described as a "powerful, cordless misting fan designed for both indoor and outdoor use". There was a natural curiosity about how its misting function would integrate into an indoor environment, especially with concerns over potentially carpets or workspaces.
Shark says the HydroGo's "evaporative cooling technology" generates superfine droplets from its 150ml integrated water tank, claiming a refreshing mist that avoids the creation of wet surfaces – a claim I was eager to evaluate for Mirror Choice.

Testing the misting function
The idea of filling my office, full with electronic equipment, with mist initially made me feel rather apprehensive. However, a test on the dinner table quickly showed that the machine could indeed disperse a fine cooling mist without making the surfaces wet.
Feeling reassured, I brought it up to my sweltering workspace where it ran at full speed for roughly 30 minutes before the tank was empty – although I assume that a lower intensity might have prolonged the duration.
The misting feature offers two modes: constant or sporadic, providing an additional method to extend the water reservoir's longevity where refilling isn't always feasible.
I discovered that using cold or iced water in the tank further enhances the cooling effect. Filling the water tank through a hole at the top of the unit could be simplified if a funnel or pouring cup were provided, but this can easily be replicated with a measuring jug or similar item.

Portability
With up to 12 hours of cordless operation and up to 20m of portable airflow power, Shark markets the FlexBreeze HydroGo as the ideal companion for summer escapades, barbecues and patio gatherings. It also boasts an impressive rain resistance rating of IPX5, making it perfect for unexpected showers.
Another key feature of its portability is the fan's ability to operate with or without its power cable - and it conveniently charges while in use when plugged in. The fan also comes with a quick-release base that allows a switch from a tabletop fan to a telescopic pedestal stand.

Performance
The HydroGo has five fan speeds, two smart breeze modes, continuous mist, and interval mist options. According to Shark, at maximum fan speed, the airflow can reach up to 20m.
Despite its lightweight design, the unit packs a surprising punch in terms of power. I discovered that setting three provided the ideal balance between effective air circulation and noise level, with setting five proving a bit too noisy for comfortable use.
This device would likely be more suitable for outdoor use, where ambient music or the buzz of a larger gathering could help drown out the sound.

So, what other options are available on the market?
Priced at £129.99, the Shark FlexBreeze HydroGo might not fit into everyone's budget as an immediate solution for summer cooling. Alternatively, Amazon offers the HOMCOM Pedestal Fan with Water Mist Spray, a larger but less portable option currently priced at £89.99.
This model, which features a robust 3.2L water tank for extended cooling sessions, has received a 4-star rating from shoppers.
For those seeking a more high-tech choice, Dyson's Purifier Humidify+Cool is available for £699.99. This gadget utilises a carbon filter to disperse purified, humidified air throughout the room.
Back within the Shark range, there's also the FlexBreeze Pro Mist Indoor and Outdoor Fan and Misting System, priced at £219.99, which boasts a significantly larger water tank than its smaller counterpart.
Verdict
The Shark FlexBreeze HydroGo has been a total revelation in my home office - while the misting tank doesn't have an exceptionally long lifespan, the potent fan speed alone is enough to maintain a comfortable temperature.
The mist function provides a welcome extra for those days when the heat becomes unbearable, though be prepared to refill the tank every half an hour or so unless you set it to intermittent.

The device itself boasts a stylish design, compact size, and its portability and rain-resistance make it incredibly versatile for a variety of uses. I agree with other customers that it would be beneficial if future models included either an app or remote to adjust the settings, but considering the price point, I believe it offers good value for the features provided.
