Rowers head to Isles of Scilly for World Gig Championships

BBC News01-05-2025
Hundreds of gig rowers and thousands of spectators will descend on the Isles of Scilly this weekend for the 34th World Pilot Gig Championships.Competitors of all ages will row pilot gigs, a type of traditional Cornish rowing boat, in a series of races from 2 to 4 May off the coast of St Mary's - Scilly's largest island. The championship started in 1990 with a handful of crews but has grown to become the "biggest and most-prestigious event" in Scilly's calendar, according to Tristan Hick, who chairs the organising committee.Mr Hick said the islands, 28 miles off Cornwall, will be "totally turned over to rowing and rowers, most people are here to either watch or take part".
'Team spirit'
He said the event was the "pinnacle of the sport", adding "it's what we all look forward to every year."About 450 crews were expected to take part in the three-day event, with between 2,000 and 3,000 spectators, Mr Hicks said.Crews will come from across the south west and the UK, as well as several crews from the Netherlands are making the journey to the islands."I think some people really enjoy the history of it, they love the team spirit that there is," he said."It's a fabulous social event as well as an ultra competitive environment. I think the two things go hand-in-hand to create quite a unique sport."The championships has introduced new events this year, including categories for under 25s.Mr Hicks said the organisation had also introduced reusable festival cups designed by a local artist from St Martin's this year in an effort to reduce the use of single-use plastics.

'Dan Hicks trying to keep it away from him. You never know what you're going to get at a major championship. You're on the air for eight, nine hours. 'Apparently (other people) on the other side were fine and calm. But Kiz has taken cover under his sports coat, the nicest coat. 'Dan has saved his partner and protected him.' The commentary team then went back on air, with Hicks left laughing at the situation. He said to Tirico: 'I'm telling you Mike, just when you think you've seen it all. 'This bat did 20 laps around this tower, it looked like he was looking for a place to land. 'Maybe it just wanted to get out of the rain. I was (protecting Kiz). NRLW rookie cops suspension for spear tackle on debut

Reegan Hicks' nightmare NRLW debut has been capped off by a two-game ban for the tackle that left match officials to banish her from the field. The Brisbane forward was sent off for her spear tackle on Sienna Lofipo in the second half of the Broncos' 44-4 win over Gold Coast on Sunday. The match review committee charged Hicks with a grade-two dangerous throw on Monday morning, meaning she will miss upcoming clashes with the Sydney Roosters and St George Illawarra with an early guilty plea. The Queensland Under-19s co-captain risks missing a third game against Cronulla by challenging the charge. Broncos coach Scott Prince said 18-year-old Hicks was left distraught by the tackle. 'I know she's really upset and really remorseful for what she did,' Prince said. 'It's one of those things where you hate to see it in the game. It's just a straight-up accident. She's really upset there in the sheds. 'She's an 18-year-old, who's just trying to do her best for her football team. 'The girls have rallied around her, making sure she's in good spirits.' Elsewhere, Gold Coast captain Georgia Hale is set to miss one game, against Wests Tigers, for her hip-drop-style tackle on Brianna Clark from earlier in the game. Hale was sin-binned for the shot and will miss a second game if she chooses to challenge her grade-two dangerous contact charge.
