Inside TikTok's literature boom: BookTok creators share their top summer reads
While TikTok has earned a name for brainrot and doomscrolling, it's actually leading this summer's hottest revival: BookTok. The hashtag currently contains over 59.3 million posts, while TikTok Shop data reveals that book sales were up 375% in 2024 compared to 2023.
But what are people reading? According to popular online bookseller, Books2Door, the romance genre has seen one of the biggest readership surges, with sales rising 20% month on month. And while romantasy has dominated the book charts (think ACOTAR), Books2Door predict a slight change in reading habits this summer. 'A noticeable trend this summer is a shift from last summer's Romantasy (romantic fantasy) boom toward darker romance genres,' the bookseller reveals.
They add: 'Titles like Legacy of Gods and Haunting Adeline are gaining traction, reflecting readers' growing interest for suspenseful love stories with a darker edge. This shift signals a broader trend in adult fiction where readers are exploring complex emotional themes paired with thrilling, sometimes supernatural elements.'
So, looking for your next fairy-king romantic epic to sizzle over by the pool? Or maybe a more sentimental drama to lie back with in the grass? We asked four popular BookTok creators for their summer picks:
Ben Mercer, @bcemercer
Summer holidays are the perfect time to invest in a deep read. Ben shares his top fictional picks that might make you shed a tear or two.
My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante - "This summer I'm going to Italy and I'm finally going to take down Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan novels starting with My Brilliant Friend. It's fun to read something related to where you're headed, it's supposed to be brilliant and if I like it, I can crack on with the sequels!"
The Names by Florence Knapp - "Knapp's debut novel The Names is a great concept, Sliding Doors mixed with One Day. A mother takes her newborn son to the registry office and the narrative splits in three as the name she chooses changes the rest of his life. It's easy to read but funny, shocking and moving all at once."
A Month In The Country by J.L. Carr - "This is my favourite read of the year so far. It's warm, profound, and funny with a small mystery running through the tale of a WW1 veteran who's spending a month uncovering an old painting in a village chapel. It's got the perfect elegiac, quietly beautiful tone for a summer read."

Sam - @samfallingbooks
Sometimes we find love where we least expect it. Here are Sam's top romantic and fantasy reads to transport you faraway - without getting on a flight
Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid - "A beautifully written story set in the 1980s centring around the life of astronauts! It blends the wonder of space with all the love we find in our lifetime. An unforgettable read that will 100% make you cry."
A Witch's Guide to Magical Innkeeping by Sangu Mandanna - "A cosy fantasy about a witch trying to get her powers back while running an unconventional inn for the lost and the wandering. Equal parts hilarious, thoughtful and heartfelt. An absolute delight."
Say You'll Remember Me by Abby Jimenez by Abby Jimenez - "This book never fails to deliver a romance with so much heart. Falling in love when you least expect it, falling in love while life keeps moving, while you're still navigating hurdles, and holding on to the love that you have throughout it all because that's what makes it all worth it. I will never skip an Abby Jimenez book."
Dakota - @sp3llb00k
If dark romance is your cup of (black) tea, then Dakota has the best picks for you.
Bonjour Tristesse by Françoise Sagan - "A sharp, melancholic tale of a teenage girl's cruel games and emotional awakening during a sultry summer on the French Riviera. It dances between innocence and manipulation, freedom and guilt. Holden Caulfield if he were a hopeless romantic girl. Reads like a spell - you'll feel the sun on your skin, too."
Mrs. S by K Patrick - "A taut, sensual portrait of forbidden desire set in an English boarding school where a repressed young matron begins an affair with the headmaster's wife. It's about bodies, boundaries, and the ache of queer becoming across a blistering hot summer. Wonderful and gross."
The Girls by Emma Cline - "A sun-drenched fever dream of adolescence and obsession, following a teenage girl lured into the dark glamour of a Manson-like cult in 1960s California. It's about a longing for belonging, for danger, for someone to notice you. Sexy and terrifying."
Coco - @cultofbooks
Looking for love – but with less fairies? Coco shares some of her favourite contemporary romances.
Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston - "This book found me at a point where I was losing my love for reading. It shows a love story that was beautiful, not perfect, and was a little out of its time loop (once you read it, you'll get what I mean)"
Game On by Ki Stephens - "It's so nostalgic to all my favourite books, the romance, the tension AND she is an English girl in America (take me out right now)"
Out on a Limb by Hannah Bonam-Young - "This is a beautiful contemporary romance that highlights a relationship of a differently able couple and how they deal with a surprise that comes along the way (9 months in the making!)"

Now, Yaz has jetted off to Rome with a boy she was seeing prior to appearing on the show. His name is Joe Nuttall, 28, and he's an ex footballer for the club Altrincham. A source told The Sun: 'Yaz and Joe were seeing each other before the villa and they've now rekindled their romance after she left. 'She'd take him to concerts with her before appearing on Love Island, and now they appear to have jetted off to Italy together. 'He posted a photo dump of them together in the same place but it's now been deleted.' The Sun has approached Yaz's rep for comment. Gio, 30, asked why the group went their separate ways, and Yaz said: 'Lockdown. We just couldn't perform anything.' And fans were quick to comment on the revelation, with one writing: 'At least we finally have the answer why you split lol.' The group responded: 'Woops. Look, we haven't split, we're on hiatus!!' Another fan begged for 'one more tour', to which the group teased: 'For old time's sake?' After successfully making it through to The X Factor live shows in 2016, Four Of Diamonds pushed on until week five of the competition before being eliminated. The girls were sent home following a sing off with Gifty Louise, when only their mentor Louis Walsh voted to save them. 5 Yaz failed to find love on this year's Love Island

Vintage baby girl names that are on-trend and will 'never be boring'
Deciding your little one's name is no easy task as there are so many to choose from – and while unique names are great these traditional, vintage ones never go out of style Anyone who's had a baby, or is expecting, knows how exciting the naming process can be. Choosing a moniker for your child is one of the most important decisions new parents will make. It can often be difficult if you haven't found the perfect one as there are so many names to choose from. With that being said, you might need a little inspiration. One video went viral on TikTok recently – as 'The Baby Name Consultant' shared a list of 31 vintage names for those expecting little girls. She listed the traditional names have stood the test of time, which means they are less likely to go out of fashion or get boring. Girly names that are popular right now include Penelope, Florence and Matilda. According to Bounty, a family toy company, Ivy comes in at number seven as most popular. If you are looking for names beginning with 'S', you could use vintage names such as Sophie or Sophia, or Seraphina - which is commonly shortened to 'FiFi'. The list by @thebabynameconsultant also mentioned Maeve, Iris, Phoebe, Ruby, Flora, Lydia, Juliet, Elena, Juno, Zoe, Naomi, Helena, Louise, Lucia, June, Vivian, Isadora, Claudia, Elise, Nina, Frances and Georgia. One parent commented and said: "My daughter is Serafina, Fifi for short and my name is Nina! Rare seeing both of our names in one place." Another said: "We have an Iris." A third wrote: "We have a Genevieve and call her Gigi." And a fourth added: "Louise is so beautiful." Why do parents like vintage baby names? Many parents feel a connection to the past and want to honour their family heritage by choosing names that belonged to grandparents or great-grandparents. Vintage names often have a classic, enduring quality. They tend to age well and are less likely to go out of style quickly. And as some vintage names fell out of common use, they now feel fresh and distinctive compared to more modern, trendy names. What are the most popular baby names in the UK? The Office for National Statistics (ONS) released its annual figures for the most popular baby names in England and Wales back in December. The data always reflects the year just gone, so the list makes up the top 100 names for boys and girls from 2023. Muhammad has overtaken Noah as the top name for baby boys, with Noah dropping to second place after coming in first in 2021 and 2022, followed by Oliver. Muhammad was the second most popular name last year and has been in the top 10 since 2016. Back in 2012, it ranked only 20th so it's climbed up the list significantly over the past decade. Meanwhile, there have been no changes to the top three names for baby girls, with Olivia, Amelia and Isla, coming up top. Unsurprisingly, Olivia has stolen the crown as the most popular baby girl's name for the eighth year in a row.

Popular UK tourism attracts thousands of people each year for 'most random' feature
Land's End in Cornwall is one of the UK's most iconic landmarks and despite a recent viral TikTok review which branded it 'weird' and 'just a cliff' – it still draws in the visitors Finding ways to entertain yourself and the family during the summer break can be challenging, which explains why many opt to spend their day exploring attractions across Britain. Topping many lists, particularly during a Cornish getaway, is Land's End. As one of Britain's most recognisable landmarks positioned at the country's edge and serving as the most westerly point, the clifftop location has been transformed into a comprehensive family destination, featuring a museum, mini-golf course, 4D cinema and petting zoo. Nevertheless, a recent viral TikTok critique has gained traction after the visitor branded it as 'bizarre' and dismissed it as 'merely a cliff'. Yet despite the scathing review, the location continues to attract hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. The TikTok concerned was shared by well-known reviewer Phil Carr (@Philc84), and it amassed over 1 million views. Phil opens the clip by saying: "The biggest cash-grab and the most random attraction in the UK - Land's End. God, I've had some emails about this place, and it's just weird. "Since 1066, Land's End has been open to all, but in recent years people have seen the amount of visitors that there's cash on that there cliff face." After purchasing a £21.50 ticket that granted him access to all the attractions, Phil started his adventure at the children's farm within the site. Phil remarked: "Christ knows why the most westerly point in Britain needs a children's farm, but we don't have the time to worry about it because we've got crazy golf." The pirate-themed mini-golf course was a highlight for Phil, who relished the challenge of the 15-hole game. He commented: "I am having a good time, but the problem with all mini-golf is you'll just back up behind a family with young children." Phil then experienced the thrills of the 4D cinema before exploring the museum dedicated to the iconic Land's End to John o' Groats journey. His day continued with a visit to the Aardman experience, which has been delighting visitors since its opening in 2018. The exhibit showcases beloved Aardman characters and sets, such as Morph, Wallace and Gromit, and Shaun the Sheep. He mused: "I quite like it. Everybody loves Wallace and Gromit, so why is the Aardman Experience down here?" Phil concluded his outing with a leisurely walk through the model village, a trek along the clifftop path, and a browse through the "mother of all gift shops". For those considering a trip, Land's End is a mere 20-minute drive from Penzance. Alternatively, the 1/1a and 1b bus services connect the nearby town to Land's End, though this route is less direct and takes approximately an hour according to Google Maps.
