Venus Williams receives a wild-card entry with Reilly Opelka to play mixed doubles at the US Open
NEW YORK (AP) — Venus Williams' comeback is headed to the U.S. Open next month, when she will enter the redesigned mixed doubles tournament with Reilly Opelka via a wild-card entry.
The 45-year-old Williams, who returned to the tennis tour last week after more than a year away, and Opelka were among the 14 teams announced Tuesday by the U.S. Tennis Association for its mixed doubles event on Aug. 19-20.
Eight of the pairings received direct entry into the field based on having the highest combined current singles rankings, and six were given wild cards by the USTA.
The players with spots in the bracket include nine who have won at least one Grand Slam singles title and 14 who are ranked in the WTA or ATP top 10 for singles.
The eight duos with direct entry are No. 11 Emma Navarro and No. 1 Jannik Sinner; No. 10 Paula Badosa and No. 5 Jack Draper; No. 3 Iga Swiatek and No. 13 Casper Ruud; No. 12 Elena Rybakina and No. 4 Taylor Fritz; No. 7 Amanda Anisimova and No. 9 Holger Rune; Belinda Bencic and No. 3 Alexander Zverev; No. 4 Jessica Pegula and No. 15 Tommy Paul; No. 5 Mirra Andreeva and No. 14 Daniil Medvedev.
Badosa originally had sought a place in the field with Stefanos Tsitsipas, while Draper initially was going to play alongside Zheng Qinwen.
In addition to Williams-Opelka, the wild-card entrants are Emma Raducanu and No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz; No. 8 Madison Keys and Frances Tiafoe; Olga Danilovic and No. 6 Novak Djokovic; Taylor Townsend and No. 7 Ben Shelton; and last year's U.S. Open mixed doubles champions, Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori.
A total of 16 duos will be competing for the $1 million top prize; the last two wild-card pairs will be known at a later date.
It is still possible that Williams will ask for, and receive, a wild-card entry for singles. Those are expected to be announced by the USTA the week of Aug. 11.
She won one match each in singles and doubles at the D.C. Open in Washington last week after not competing anywhere since the Miami Open in March 2024.
Williams owns seven Grand Slam titles in singles, 14 in women's doubles — all won with her younger sister Serena — and two in mixed doubles.

Rescuers race to reach injured German Olympian stranded on a northern Pakistan mountain
PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — Rescuers comprising local mountaineers and porters resumed efforts on Wednesday to reach injured German Olympic gold medalist Laura Dahlmeier on a peak in northern Pakistan, officials said. Faizullah Faraq, a spokesman for the regional Gilgit-Baltistan government, said rescuers were racing against time to reach Dahlmeier despite bad weather on the Laila Peak, where she has been stranded since Monday following a mountaineering accident. Dahlmeier, who also won the 2017 women's biathlon World Cup, was climbing Laila Peak in the Karakoram mountain range when she was struck by falling rocks. Climbers including two Americans attempting the same ascent are trying to join the rescue operation. Military helicopters were on standby but have been unable to deploy due to low visibility and ongoing bad weather and rainfall, Faraq said. Dahlmeier, 31, will be brought to the city of Skardu when she is rescued, Faraq said. Local authorities launched the rescue mission Monday after receiving a distress signal from Dahlmeier's climbing partner, Marina Eva, who managed to descend to base camp with help from rescuers Tuesday. Dahlmeier was injured at an altitude of about 5,700 meters (18,700 feet) around noon Monday, according to her management team in Germany. German broadcaster ZDF reported she suffered serious injuries in a rockfall. 'There is still no clarity on her condition,' Alpine Club of Pakistan Vice President Karrar Haidri told The Associated Press. 'She sustained serious injuries, but she has oxygen with her, and injured climbers have been known to survive for days.' 'With heavy clouds choking the sky and rain falling on the high slopes of Laila Peak, rescuers are pushing through dangerous terrain to reach her,' Haidri said. Hundreds of climbers try to scale mountains in northern Pakistan every year and accidents are common because of avalanches and sudden weather changes. The region has also been battered by above-normal seasonal rains, triggering flash floods and landslides. Since last week, at least 20 Pakistani tourists have been missing after floodwaters swept them away near the northern district of Chilas.

SINGAPORE (AP) — It's only a semifinal race, but all eyes at the swimming world championships Wednesday will be on Léon Marchand as the Frenchman goes after the world record in the 200-meter individual medley. Marchand won four individual gold medals a year ago at the Paris Olympics. But in these worlds he's swimming only the 200 and 400 medley — and a few relays — with his focus on taking down records. This is Day 4 in Singapore and Marchand's first appearance, due to his lighter schedule. American Ryan Lochte holds the 200 IM record (1 minute, 54.00 seconds) and Marchand set the 400 IM record (4:02.5) at the 2003 worlds in Fukuoka, Japan. Five finals are set for Wednesday, and the Americans have a good shot in two. Claire Weinstein has the top qualifying time in the women's 200 freestyle with defending Olympic champion Mollie O'Callaghan of Australia just behind. Luca Urlando leads the 200 butterfly qualifiers. NASCAR Truck Series driver Stewart Friesen fractures pelvis and leg in crash
Associated Press DRUMMONDVILLE, Quebec (AP) — NASCAR Truck Series driver Stewart Friesen suffered pelvic and leg fractures in a crash, but has apparently avoided any head, neck, or spine injuries, according to his wife. Friesen was in a 'tremendous amount of pain' after the crash Monday night during a Super DIRTcar Series King of the North race at Autodrome Drummond in Drummondville, Quebec, Jessica Friesen posted on social media. 'Stewart has suffered an unstable/open book pelvic fracture, meaning his pelvis is broken in two or more places, with a large hematoma on the area' she posted. 'Stewart also has a fractured right leg." A CT scan showed no head, neck, or spine injuries, she said. Video of the crash shows Friesen's truck hitting an outside wall on the track, flipping up in the air and catching fire. He landed hard on the track and was hit by another truck before his truck came to a rest on its wheels. Jessica Friesen thanked the track crew for their patience and care in getting her husband out of the truck. Friesen is expected to be transferred to a New York hospital on Wednesday, Jessica Friesen said in an update posted Tuesday, where he faces multiple surgeries. 'We want to thank everyone here at the hospital in Trois-Rivières, Quebec, for the outstanding care, and several members of the racing community who have helped facilitate getting Stewart closer to home,' she posted. 'The outpouring of support from all of our racing family has been overwhelming, in the best way."
