‘Never been the most talented fighter': Robert Garcia discusses Berlanga's KO loss and more

Yahoo4 days ago
Edgar Berlanga was stopped in five rounds by Hamzah Sheeraz.
Trainer Robert Garcia spent some time talking to Fight Hub TV about the results of Edgar Berlanga's fight against Hamzah Sheeraz while also touching on where Canelo is at in his career along with providing some info on some of his other fighters staying busy as they await for their next fights to be scheduled. Check out some excerpts below.
On Berlanga's knockout loss to Sheeraz
'When it comes to Berlanga I think they did a good job with him in the first 15, 16 fights, all in the first round, built up his name. Berlanga has never been the most talented fighter out there but look, his power and his mouth — 'cause he knows how to talk — got him to fight Canelo and make a lot of money. His last fight against Sheeraz made him a lot of money.
'There's still a few fights out there he could do, might not win, but he could still do and get paid a lot of money. So I got to give him credit for doing what he's done...He'll probably never be world champion but he's made more money than a lot of champions.'
On why Canelo wasn't able to KO Berlanga
'It's just Canelo doesn't go for the knockout anymore...we've seen in the last few fights he does just enough to win. He did the same to Munguia, he dropped Munguia but didn't want to finish him, Charlo, Berlanga. He wants to cruise through fights...he doesn't go all out because he doesn't want to finish his body, he knows he still has a few more years and a few big fights where he wants to take care of himself and not punish himself too much. That's why he hasn't been able to not those guys out, not because he can't, he just does enough to win.'
On the status of Vergil Ortiz
'Vergil is back in the gym, staying in shape. Hopefully Golden Boy can figure something out late September, October, November.'
On Raymond Muratalla
'Right now we're waiting on Top Rank, see what the plans is. Our mandatory is Andy Cruz, if we go straight into Andy Cruz we're ready for it, too. If we could do a voluntary title defense it wouldnt' be a bad idea, I would like that too for Raymond, especially in our hometown...There's nothing right now lined up.

Lando Norris Wins with One-Stop Strategy in Hungary, McLaren Captures 200th Win

On the opening lap of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Lando Norris fell from third to fifth, being passed by the Mercedes of George Russell and the Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso, as pole-sitter Charles Leclerc and Norris's teammate, Oscar Piastri, pulled ahead. Norris's mistake on the opening lap ultimately won him the race as McLaren split their strategy, with the only chance of Norris competing for a win coming with a one-stop race, keeping him out of most of the wheel-to-wheel racing action. Norris, Piastri, and Leclerc were all chasing their ninth career win, with Norris taking the win for his side of the McLaren garage and bringing the English team their 200th win. Norris's win over Piastri in second drops Piastri's points lead to nine points. "I'm dead, it was tough," Norris told F1TV. "We were not planning on the one-stop at the beginning, but after the first lap, it was kinda our only option to get back into things. The final stint with Oscar catching, I was pushing flat out." Leclerc was able to hold off Piastri through the first set of pit stops on the two-stop strategy, with Piastri pitting first on lap 19 for the undercut and Leclerc staying ahead after pitting a lap later. While Norris was running behind Leclerc and Piastri, the championship leader had to choose his priority of racing against Leclerc or Norris. In the end, Piastri extended his middle section to have the freshest hard tires to take the race to his teammate in the closing laps, after Leclerc was pulled to the pits complaining about his tires. Ultimately, on lap 41, Leclerc and Ferrari took the bait when McLaren set up the pit for Piastri, drawing Leclerc down the pit lane. Piastri and McLaren had decided by this half way point, while just two seconds behind Leclerc, that the race was with their competitor on the other side of the McLaren garage. Piastri would pit on lap 46. Five laps later, Piastri was able to make the run on Leclerc for the lead once his second hard tires were heated underneath him. When Piastri moved into second ahead of Leclerc, he was nine seconds behind his teammate on 14-lap fresher tires by lap 62, Piastri was within three seconds. Cutting into the lead by about a third of a second a lap, set Piastri up for his first attempt at a race-winning pass to come with two laps remaining, a lockup kept Norris ahead. "I think I needed to be a couple of tenths closer, which was going to take a mistake by Lando to achieve that," Piastri told F1TV. "I felt like that was going to be my best chance, you never want to save it for the next lap, which never comes." As soon as Norris picked the one-stop option, Piastri was forced into his only move being an overtake on a notoriously hard passing track. "I pushed as hard as I could, I think after I saw Lando going for the one [stop], I knew I was going to have to overtake on the track, which is much easier said than done around here," Piastri said. "Tried a few things, it was a gamble either way, today unfortunately we were on the wrong side of it. The team did a great job, the car really came alive in the second half of the race." When Leclerc fell to third, his race came undone. George Russell, came out fourth behind the Ferrari after his final pit stop. While trying to defend, Leclerc was desperate and aggressive as Russell radioed that the Ferrari was moving under braking on lap 62. Leclerc pulled the same move on lap 63, but Russell was able to get around the second time. The Stewards reviewed Leclerc's move and hit him with a five-second penalty. By the end of the race, Leclerc was 15 seconds off the podium but held fourth place with the penalty crossing the finish line 16 seconds ahead of Alonso. Aston Martin had their best race finish as Alonso took fifth ahead of Sauber's Gabrial Bortoleto and his teammate Lance Stroll. Liam Lawson finished ahead of Max Verstappen in ninth with Kimi Antoneill holding on with hard tires for 48 laps to capture the last point of the Grand Prix, keeping Issac Hadjar and Lewis Hamilton at bay. Eddie Howe hopes Alexander Isak will return to training with Newcastle

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is hoping to see striker Alexander Isak back in training in the coming days. Isak, who has been the subject of interest from Liverpool, has missed the Magpies' pre-season tour of Asia amid speculation over his future. Newcastle are now returning home after their trip concluded with a 1-1 draw against Tottenham in Seoul on Sunday and Howe hopes the Sweden international will report back as normal. Howe told The Chronicle after the game: 'Of course I'd like him to but whether or not he will, I don't know at this moment in time. 'Other people have been dealing with that situation back at home.' Sweden international Isak did not travel with the squad due to a thigh injury but the player reportedly wants to explore the possibility of a move. Newcastle rejected an offer of £110million from Liverpool for the 25-year-old, who has three years remaining on his contract and is valued by the club at £150million. Isak has trained with former club Real Sociedad while Newcastle have been away but is now thought to be returning to the UK. Newcastle, meanwhile, are understood to have had a bid worth up to £69.7million for RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko rejected by the German club. Slovenia international Sesko has also been linked with Manchester United.

Lions health updates August 3: Campbell presser, game follow-ups, & practice news

Dan Campbell provided some health updates today in his press conference. Relevant quotes are included below. There were no surprises coming out of the preseason game on July 31 which is always a good thing. I've also included some follow-ups from the preseason game as well as issues from the past week. From today's Dan Campbell press conference.... Dan Skipper - left ankle sprain, July 31 "He'll probably be down for about a week. Got his ankle a little bit." This injury occurred on the first play of the 2nd quarter. Video of the injury was obscured both on the live feed and the all-22 angle. All indications are that this is not a severe ankle sprain, and he'll be fine soon. Taylor Decker - shoulder cleanup surgery, June or July "He will be out there individual group. Don't see him doing any team right now." Decker was expected to return to practice after the first preseason game, and he has stayed true to that schedule. He should be ready for the season. Terrion Arnold - hamstring, July 29 "It's not a major hamstring. This is a low-grade. We're hoping to have him back by the middle of the week." A one-week absence for a hamstring means it's very minor. He had an even more minor calf issue on July 24 for which he returned to practice the next day. Kenny Yeboah - right knee hyperflexion, July 31 Campbell stated that Yeboah avoided any significant injury during the game. This was expected but still welcome news. ____________________________________________ Following up on others from the game.... Hendon Hooker - head trauma, July 31 Hooker had his head violently whiplashed to the ground which was highly concerning for a concussion. Now three days later, it appears he has very fortunately escaped a concussion diagnosis. Campbell stated that Hooker will start the next preseason game. Ennis Rakestraw - chest contusion, July 20 Jeff Risdon reviewed the film and observed that Rakestraw's chest injury is clearly still bothering him. This injury was reported as a contusion which can be very painful and cause a mass effect from an underlying hematoma (pooling of blood related to a bruise). A contusion isn't a long-term concern, so hopefully his symptoms resolve soon which should result in better performance. A forceful blunt trauma to the chest can also cause a rib sprain, rib fracture, or a rib cartilage injury which could all take longer to recover from than a contusion. Craig Reynolds - chest, July 31 Reynolds was down briefly after appearing to land on the ball. There have been no follow-up reports of an injury. Isaac TeSlaa - left knee TeSlaa has been wearing a left knee sleeve during training camp for unknown reasons. Whatever might be going on didn't slow him down whatsoever during the preseason game as he flashed scary, big-play potential. ____________________________________ From Dan Campbell's press conference a few days ago... Kerby Joseph - knee (presumed left) "Not major….just a little bit of a knee irritation. Hoping to get him back Saturday [yesterday]." Joseph posted an Instagram pic showing a left knee sleeve. He is back at practice today so there is nothing major going on. Josh Paschal - unspecified "cleanup" surgery, on NFI "He's on schedule to be ready for early September to start practicing." The NFI (non-football injury) designation as opposed to PUP (physically unable to perform) continues to be interesting here. It could imply (among other things) that he was injured doing something he wasn't supposed to be doing or that the injury is non-orthopedic related. By placing him on NFI as opposed to PUP, the Lions are not obligated to pay his base salary which could become relevant if he's not ready for the start of the season. __________________________________ From practice today...
