And Léa isn't sure either, so she rehearses different voice memos.
Yes, do it. No, don't. Oh no, uh, there was a family emergency, I can't help you
. But invariably, she does help them, with real care and curiosity, not in trite or Pollyannaish ways. She is doctrinal but not doctrinaire, and all these rituals of change for her congregants are rituals of change for her, too. She becomes more confident and mature ushering a reluctant bar mitzvah boy through the process. She hones her discernment skills while officiating a wedding.

The most intriguing relationship on the show is between Léa and Arié (Lionel Dray), the local orthodox rabbi and her former teacher. There's a magnetic pull and constant fascination between them, a lot of trust but also a sense of betrayal. He's her mentor, and they have an intense erotic energy, but each also sees the other as practicing religion incorrectly -- a tension that can be playful right up until it is profoundly hurtful. The goings on at their respective shuls highlight their own misgivings about their denominational choices: Maybe her practice
is
shallow; maybe his practice
is
misogynistic. Let's resolve to smolder at each other about it.

In addition to being charming, 'Reformed' is interesting. Sitcom shenanigans nestle alongside philosophical musings. A farce unfolds at a Seder, and goofy sibling banter segues into deeper conversation and back. All eight episodes are available to stream now on Max.

Ryan Coogler's 'Sinners' starts streaming this week, including a BASL version, here's how to watch

Hailed by many critics as one of writer-director Ryan Coogler's best films, Sinners makes the leap to streaming this week when it premieres on Max on July 4. The film stars Michael B. Jordan in dual roles as twins Stack and Smoke, who return to their hometown in Jim Crow-era Mississippi to open a juke joint, where they encounter a supernatural evil. Sinners grossed over $364 million globally during its theatrical run this spring and will stream exclusively on Max. The film co-stars Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Li Jun Li, Yao, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller and Delroy Lindo. In addition to the standard version of the film, Max will also be releasing a Black American Sign Language (BASL) version of the film, making Max the first streaming platform to exclusively debut a film interpreted in BASL. Here's everything you need to know about how to watch Sinners when it arrives on streaming this week. Sinners (both the original and BASL versions of the film) will arrive on HBO Max on Friday, July 4. Sinners will stream on HBO Max on July 4. It will also premiere on HBO's linear channel on July 5 at 8 p.m. ET. Sinners will stream exclusively on Max starting on July 4. You can tune in with a standalone subscription to the streaming platform, which starts at $9.99/month, or get the Max, Disney+ and Hulu bundle, which combines all the programming from those three platforms for one discounted price, $29.99/month. Michael B. Jordan as Smoke and Stack Miles Caton as Sammy AKA "Preacher Boy' Hailee Steinfeld as Mary Wunmi Mosaku as Annie Jayme Lawson as Pearline Jack O'Connell as Remmick Omar Benson Miller as Cornbread Li Jun Li as Grace Delroy Lindo as Delta Slim While those who've seen the Sinners end credits scene feel that the door is open for the Sinners franchise to expand, director Ryan Coogler seems to disagree. 'I've been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, so I wanted to get away from that,' Coogler told Ebony Magazine. 'I wanted the movie to feel like a full meal: your appetizers, starters, entrees and desserts, I wanted all of it there… That was always my intention.'

‘Sinners' Max Debut Will Include First-Ever Black American Sign Language Interpretation

Source: Courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures / Sinners / Michael B. Jordan / Ryan Coogler Max is breaking new ground in accessibility and representation with the U.S. premiere of Sinners . The highly anticipated film, directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan, will be available to stream in two formats: the original theatrical version and a newly created version interpreted in Black American Sign Language (BASL). Read more inside. According to sources from The Hollywood Reporter , this marks the first time a major streaming platform has released a film with a BASL interpretation. BASL is more than some variation of American Sign Language (ASL). It's a rich, culturally specific dialect with its own grammar, rhythm, facial expressions, and historical significance. 'Sinners in BASL' represents a major step forward in inclusive storytelling by acknowledging and honoring the Black Deaf community's unique cultural identity. Interpreting the BASL version is Nakia Smith, a prominent voice in the Black Deaf community known for her advocacy and cultural fluency. Her performance brings a layered depth to the film's themes of identity, justice, and duality. The interpretation is directed by Rosa Lee Timm, who also helmed ASL versions of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and A Minecraft Movie . 'Accessibility within streaming is not a one-size-fits-all approach,' said Naomi Waibel, senior VP of Global Product Management at Warner Bros. Discovery to THR . 'Sinners with Black American Sign Language is an example of how culturally nuanced access can enrich the viewing experience for our audiences.' She emphasized that the BASL edition is not just about access, but it's about authenticity and creating a viewing experience that resonates with the specific cultural experiences of the Black Deaf community. Max previously offered ASL-interpreted versions of major titles like The Last of Us , Barbie , and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire . But the BASL version of Sinners sets a new precedent for streaming platforms looking to deepen inclusivity with intention and care. Written and directed by Coogler and produced by Proximity Media, Sinners features Jordan in a dual role and promises a gripping narrative rooted in emotional complexity. The addition of a BASL version not only increases access, but also reaffirms Warner Bros. Discovery's commitment to diverse, meaningful representation. On July 4, Sinners is set to spark more conversation as it heads to Max. It's not just about its storyline, but about the future of truly inclusive entertainment.
