Avelo announces 2 new routes at Wilmington Airport. Here's what to know
Avelo Airlines announced on Tuesday, March 11 that one new Florida route will be added and a previously suspended route will return to service at the Wilmington Airport in the coming months.

Avelo Airlines announced it will expand service at the Wilmington Airport (ILG) with nonstop routes to Northeast Florida's Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) and North Carolina's Research Triangle via Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU).
This announcement comes a few weeks after the airline announced that it would be ending service between ILG and Atlanta, Georgia, as well as Concord/Charlotte, North Carolina.
Flights to Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina, were offered out of Wilmington Airport in the summer of 2023, but fell victim to the slew of seasonal suspensions or cancelled routes that were enforced a few months later.
Beginning in May, Avelo will operate the new routes twice weekly. Travelers can make reservations at AveloAir.com.
Flights to JAX begin Friday, May 23 with twice weekly service on Mondays and Fridays. Flights to RDU begin Thursday, May 22 with service on Thursdays and Sundays.

Daytona Beach, Florida (DAB)
Flights to Daytona Beach will be available on Sundays and Thursdays through the end of April.
According to the Avelo Airlines website, these flights will return in November after originally being up for reevaluation by the company.
Fort Lauderdale / Miami, Florida (FLL)
Flights to Fort Lauderdale will take off from ILG on Fridays and Mondays between now and the end of April. At the beginning of May, these flights will take off on Sundays and Thursdays until the end of August.
Fort Myers, Florida (RSW)
Flights to Fort Myers will take off Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays through the end of April.
Beginning May 2, flights will take off on Fridays and Mondays until the week of June 9. Flights will then be serviced on Sundays the Thursdays until the end of August.
Jacksonville, Florida (JAX)
Beginning Friday, May 23, flights to Jacksonville, Florida will take off on Mondays and Fridays until Sept. 1.
The route will pause for the rest of September and October, and then start up again Friday, Nov. 7.
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina (MYR)
Flights to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina will take off on Sundays and Thursdays starting in the beginning of May until mid-June.
Starting June 13, flights will take off Fridays and Mondays until Monday, Sept. 1.
Nashville, Tennessee (BNA)
Flights to Nashville, Tennessee will take off Thursdays and Sundays from ILG from the beginning of May to the end of August.
Orlando/Lakeland, Florida (LAL)
Flights will fly from ILG to LAL on Thursdays and Sundays between now and the end of August.

Orlando, Florida (MCO)
Flights are available to MCO on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays until the end of April.
Beginning May 2, the flights will reduce in frequency to Mondays and Fridays until early June.
Starting June 9, the Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday frequency will return until Monday, Sept. 1.
Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina (RDU)
Flights to Raleigh-Durham International Airport will be serviced from ILG on Thursdays and Sundays beginning Thursday, May 22.
Beginning Friday, Sept. 5, flights will take off from ILG on Fridays and Mondays until mid-November.
San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU)
Flights to San Juan Puerto Rico will take off on Wednesdays and Saturdays between now and the end of August.
Sarasota / Bradenton, Florida (SRQ)
Flights to Sarasota will take off on Wednesdays and Saturdays from now until April 26.
This flight will officially return in November after it was under evaluation by Avelo.
Tampa, Florida (TPA)
Flights to Tampa, Florida will take off Mondays and Fridays between now and Sept. 1.
West Palm Beach, Florida (PBI)
Flights to West Palm Beach, Florida will take off on Mondays and Fridays until April 28.
West Palm Beach flights will return in November, after being reevaluated by Avelo.

Wilmington, North Carolina (ILM)
Despite reports that the airline will pull out of the Wilmington, North Carolina market, for now flights are still available for booking from ILG.
Flights take off to ILM on Thursdays and Sundays until June 8, and then on Fridays and Mondays until Sept. 1.

US hotel room construction hits 20-quarter low: CoStar

Dive Brief: The volume of U.S. hotel rooms under construction decreased year over year for a sixth consecutive month in June, according to new CoStar data. As of last month, there were 138,922 U.S. hotel rooms under construction, a 20-quarter low, according to Isaac Collazo, senior director of analytics at CoStar subsidiary STR. The volume of rooms under construction decreased 11.9% year over year in June, per CoStar. The continued decline is not surprising given 'hotel demand trending downward, unrelenting economic uncertainty and rising construction costs,' Collazo said. Most of the rooms under construction are in the upscale and upper upscale segments, which STR previously forecasted would see the highest RevPAR growth this year, driven by changing traveler behavior. Dive Insight: The volume of U.S. hotel rooms under construction has decreased each month since January, coinciding with President Donald Trump's second term. In those months, U.S. government actions have caused economic uncertainty, and tariffs have negatively impacted construction pipelines. The volume of U.S. hotel rooms in final planning (266,276 rooms) also decreased year over year in June, albeit only by 0.1%, according to CoStar. The number of U.S. hotel rooms in the planning stage (349,802 rooms), meanwhile, increased 4.8% year over year in the month. The majority of rooms in the U.S. hotel construction pipeline are in these two planning phases, but 'many will likely not be built in the near future,' Collazo said. Of rooms currently under construction, the majority are in the upscale and upper upscale segments, according to Collazo, who also noted that more than half of all rooms under development are in the South, largely outside of the top 25 markets. Higher-tier hotel segments were a bright spot for the industry last year, driving performance as high-income households prioritized travel. That trend has continued, with high-income households anticipated to make up nearly half of travelers this summer, Deloitte reported in May. Ahead of this year's Memorial Day weekend, travel outlooks appeared mostly stable despite a dip in consumer confidence and dampening international visitation. Last month, however, CoStar and Tourism Economics downgraded their 2025 and 2026 growth projections for U.S. hotel top-line performance metrics, citing elevated macroeconomic concerns. U.S. Airline Shutting Down West Coast Operations
Starting next month, an airline headquartered in Texas will shut down its service from Burbank, California. It was confirmed this week that Avelo Airlines plans on ending its operations on the West Coast. By Aug. 12, the airline will only have one aircraft operating from Burbank. That single flight will be crossed off the board on Dec. 2. Employees who work at Avelo's base in California will be allowed to transfer to its other hubs in the United States. "This was not an easy decision," Avelo said in a statement. "Our company's deepest operational roots are in BUR, having launched our first flight there over four years ago during the COVID pandemic." The low-cost airline plans on moving its planes from Burbank to the East Coast. "Avelo has previously made several changes over the past few years to our West Coast operations to improve our financial results. Despite the investment of significant time, resources, and efforts, our West Coast operations have not produced the results necessary to continue our presence there," Avelo communications manager Courtney Goff said. This is the second time this year that Avelo has dominated headlines. The airline previously agreed to carry out deportation flights for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Some people said they'd protest the airline because of that decision. Avelo said all the backlash it has received from its work with ICE had zero impact on the Burbank base shutting down. A Tale Of Two Airlines: Breeze Airways Scoops Up Routes Dropped By Avelo
Breeze Airways Airbus A220-300 airliner. One low-cost airline's loss is another's gain. It didn't take long for fellow low-fare airline Breeze Airways to snatch up Avelo's abandoned routes from Burbank, CA (BUR).; Arcata, Calif. (ACV); Redmond, OR (RDM).; Eugene, OR (EUG).; and Pasco/Tri-Cities, WA (PSC.) The service from Breeze Airways will arrive in March 2026. On July 15 I received an announcement from Avelo Airlines that the struggling carrier was closing its base at Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) later this year. After writing this story about Avelo, July 17 I got an announcement from Breeze Airways that it was launching its West Coast expansion with service to Burbank and four additional new cities. Although its competitor was never mentioned in the release, all five were previous Avelo destinations. The two airlines both launched in the midst of COVID, Avelo in April 2021, Breeze in May of that year. And during the past four years, both have expanded, Avelo from 3 Boeing 737-800s to 21, Breeze to its current 48 aircraft. Breeze has 40 Airbus A220-300 aircraft acquired new, as well as eight older Embraer E-190 aircraft it is planning to trade in next year. But while Avelo is retrenching, Breeze continues to expand. With service to the new destinations to begin in March 2026, Breeze now flies more than 300 routes in 76 cities and 34 states. And while Breeze is a private company, it recently reported its second full quarter of operating profit. 'With an expanded West Coast presence that connects travelers to our broader nationwide network, Breeze's service will bring even more options and convenience to these underserved communities,' said David Neeleman, Breeze Airways' founder and CEO. 'Our continued growth is evidence that our unique form of air travel that combines affordability and ease with high-value options like premium seating and inflight Wi-Fi is not only working, but highly desired by today's travelers.' His official biography notes that 'with 14 years in senior leadership positions at Allegiant Air and Canada Jetlines, he has extensive experience in revenue management and network planning, launching more routes in that time than anyone else in the industry. Johnson says, 'We had no inside knowledge' about Avelo's plans to exit the routes. However, he says, 'It's an interesting time for the space. Domestic hasn't just been struggling this year, but for at least two years.' 'We studied the routes out West, we look for underserved markets, we think we are the best carrier plane and model to pick up service. We're constantly in touch with many of the commercial airports; they were excited to get a long-term carrier.' Passengers sitting in Breeze Ascent, or first class seats on a Breeze Airways Airbus A220-300. Johnson says the airline will continue to use Provo, Utah as its main Western base, flying two to four flights out of Burbank a day. Most of the other destinations will have service two or three times per week. He adds that with its brand-new fleet of Airbus A220-300 aircraft and offerings like free family seating, fast onboard Wi-Fi and no change and cancel fees, Breeze is 'making it nice to fly affordably'. Unlike many low-cost airlines that offer just one class of service (like Avelo and Southwest) Breeze A220 have 137 seats, including 12 First Class, or "Breeze Ascent.' The lay-flat seat don't have the typical five-X price delta of transcontinental and international carriers. With most flight under three hours, Johnson says fliers can often upgrade for less than $100. Some 45 seats have extra leg room. Families are seated together for no additional seating charge in the family section. Even if I might call it the 'no screaming' section, Johnson says he's flown with his young family very comfortably. 'We consider ourselves a premium 'nice' carrier,' Johnson says. 'The majority of our passengers are leisure travelers, but we also have a lot of small and mid-size business owners getting around the country,' Lukas Johnson, Chief Commercial Officer of Breeze Airways. Breeze flights are all domestic now, but Johnson says the company is planning to add 'near shore' international flights around Christmas. Johnson wouldn't disclose the destinations but think Mexico and/or the Caribbean. The company does have some transcontinental service, with LAX to Hartford, CT, its longest flight. Passengers can book a flight at or download the Breeze Airways app. In June, Breeze ranked #4 among U.S. domestic carriers in on time performance. But like many things in the volatile airline industry, these rankings can change. In 2024, Avelo ranked #1 in this critical category. Even considering the economic headwinds, low-cost carriers like Avelo and Breeze continue to put out a competitive product.
