Venus Williams makes winning return to action at age of 45

Independent21 hours ago
Venus Williams made a winning return to action after 16 months out with doubles victory alongside Hailey Baptiste in Washington on Monday.
The 45-year-old seven-time grand slam tournament winner accepted a wildcard to compete in the Mubadala Citi DC Open this week.
She and fellow American Baptiste proved too strong for Eugenie Bouchard and Clervie Ngounoue as they triumphed 6-3 6-1 in a last-16 encounter that lasted 72 minutes.
Her comeback will continue as she takes on another American in Peyton Stearns in the first round of the singles. It is Williams' first appearances in a WTA Tour event since March 2024.
'It was great to come out here and see the energy,' Williams said on Sky Sports after the match. 'As we were walking out to the court, we knew this was going to be a match.
'Our opponents actually played very well. It wasn't easy for us but we brought it together quickly as a team. It was inspiring to be out here. I love this game and still hitting it big.'
Williams joked she wished she could have partnered with Baptiste, the 23-year-old world number 50, years earlier rather than playing with her sister Serena.
She said: 'I think from the first point, I could see that we were going to be a good team. We just should have started playing earlier, years ago, right? I think Serena was just in the way!'
Britain's Emma Raducanu scored an eye-catching win on her doubles debut alongside former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina.
Competing together for the first time, the duo fought back from an early deficit to beat fourth seeds Tereza Mihalikova and Britain's Olivia Nicholls 2-6 7-6 (4) 11-9 in a decisive tie-break set.
It was a notable win for Raducanu and Rybakina against opponents who triumphed at the Berlin Open last month and also reached the final at Indian Wells earlier this year.
Earlier, former men's singles champion Dan Evans enjoyed a triumphant return to the tournament as he came from behind to beat Zizou Bergs.
Evans, the veteran former British No 1, triumphed in 2023 but opted not to defend his title last year as he focused on the Olympics.
The 35-year-old was awarded a wildcard to participate this time and took advantage as he overcame a slow start to beat the Belgian Bergs, the world number 52, 3-6 6-4 6-3.
Bergs looked to have resisted the fightback when he edged back ahead with a break in the final set but Evans powered back to secure victory by winning four successive games.
'I didn't just want to take the wildcard and lose,' Evans said on Sky Sports. 'I felt I needed to pay them back a bit and try to 'defend' my title, because I couldn't last year.
'It was great, really enjoyed it, but it was rally difficult. There wasn't much rhythm. He played very well and I was lucky to come through that.'

Deion Sanders not fully recovered from health scare

July 22 - Colorado coach Deion Sanders is still "going through" his latest undisclosed health problem and is not yet back with his program. Sanders, entering Year 3 of his tenure at Colorado, has been at his Texas estate since at least June as he deals with his health. Deion Sanders Jr. has posted multiple videos online this summer that feature his father, including on Tuesday. The latest video shows the elder Sanders stepping into an ice bath, walking, shooting hoops and attending a tennis lesson. "You know I'm still going through something," the coach said. "I ain't all the way recovered." The regular season is drawing near. The Buffaloes open the season at home on Aug. 29 against Georgia Tech. A member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the 57-year-old Sanders required multiple surgeries for persistent blood clots in recent years. He had two toes amputated in 2021 to address clotting issues, but it is unclear whether that is related to his current health status. He attended Big 12 preseason media days two weeks ago and declined to give details about his condition, insisting he felt "good." --Field Level Media

BREAKING NEWS Commanders star receiver Terry McLaurin refuses to attend training camp amid bitter contract standoff

Washington Commanders receiver Terry McLaurin refused to report to training camp on Tuesday amid his bitter contract dispute with the team. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, McLaurin, 29, was not present for the Commanders' conditioning test which marked the unofficial start of their training camp. It is believed every other player on the roster was present and accounted for. McLaurin - who is viewed as one of the best wide receivers in the league - is entering the final year of his current deal with the Commanders, which he signed in 2022. The former Ohio State star has been a mainstay in the side since being drafted in 2019 but notably elevated his game last year, despite missing out on the Super Bowl. As a result, McLaurin feels as though he's done enough to earn a new deal and made that clear as he spoke to press last week. He said: 'I've been pretty frustrated, I'm not going to lie. Everything that has transpired up until this point has been disappointing and frustrating. 'I want to continue my career here. I've created my life here. My wife and I bought our first home here. This has been somewhere I've always wanted to be'. He later added: 'Without any progressive discussions, it's hard to see me stepping on the field.'

Zharnel Hughes speaks out over unpaid Grand Slam Track prize money

Britain's fastest man Zharnel Hughes is waiting for $130,000 in prize money from Grand Slam Track, which scrapped its final meet of the season over financial struggles Zharnel Hughes has warned athletes could take a wide berth of Grand Slam Track next year after admitting he is among those still waiting for prize money. ‌ Michael Johnson's breakaway competition was billed as transformative when it kicked off in Apri l by offering track stars the potential to earn unprecedented prize money. But after its fourth fixture in LA was scrapped for financial reasons, a host of athletes are still waiting to be paid. ‌ Athletes were promised top prizes of $100,000 - with Brits Matt Hudson-Smith, in Jamaica and Philadelphia, and Josh Kerr, in Miami, landing first-place finishes. World Athletics president Sebastian Coe had admitted 'this is not a good situation' with the governing body monitoring the situation. ‌ Grand Slam have not commented but a number of agents have been given assurances that prize money will be sent by late September. And Hughes, who won $130,000 across three weekends, says he is among those left in limbo - though he has received appearance fees from the US-based league. 'We haven't got any payment yet,' Britain's fastest man said. 'My agent has been in contact with them. It's not like I'm studying what's going on but I know I've not received funds yet. 'I think the appearance fees have come through but in regards to the actual racing it hasn't come through yet. I'm just looking to see if we get paid by August or September, hopefully it's in the accounts by then. 'I think people enjoyed it but obviously now the payments have been delayed and they fell short by not having the last one people may be more hesitant to try out next season. We have to see how it goes next season.' Hughes added 'it kind of sucked' that Grand Slam did not bring one of their fixtures to the UK or Europe. Ticket sales for three events that went ahead fell well below expectations. 'Hopefully they can sort themselves out and if they do go again next season they can get some races in Europe,' Hughes said. 'You won't be worrying about having to fill up the stadiums.'
