Mexican actors protested the growing threat artificial intelligence poses to their industry, calling on Sunday for better regulations to prevent voice cloning without consent.The rise of AI was a key issue in Hollywood's 2023 actors and writers' strikes, as creatives feared studios would use the technology to replace paid content.Last year, actor Scarlett Johansson accused tech firm OpenAI of imitating her voice for one of their chatbots. The company responded by modifying the tone.From the Monument to the Revolution in downtown Mexico City, dozens of audiovisual professionals held signs, including ones that read: "I don't want to be replaced by AI.""We are requesting that the voice be considered a biometric so that it is protected," Lili Barba, president of the Mexican Association of Commercial Announcements , told AFP.The 52-year-old actress, known for voicing Disney's Daisy Duck, referred to a video by the National Electoral Institute (INE) on TikTok.Released following the judicial elections on June 1, the video used the voice of the late actor Jose Lavat -- famous for the Spanish dubbing of stars like Robert De Niro and Al Pacino -- to thank citizens for voting.According to local media, Lavat's voice was used without his family's consent."It's a major violation, and we can't allow it," said Barba.Actress Harumi Nishizawa, 35, said dubbing a character is "like embroidery.""As an artist, you can create certain tones, pay attention to nuances ... observe the real actors' expressions and try to emulate what's happening on screen," she said.If no legislation is passed, she said voice dubbing done by humans "will disappear," at the expense of millions of artists' jobs.In March, Amazon's streaming platform Prime Video announced tests of an AI-assisted dubbing system, a technology also promoted by YouTube.Last month, South Korea's entertainment powerhouse CJ ENM -- behind the Oscar-winning film Parasite -- showcased an AI tool that combines visuals, audio and voice in one system while automatically generating consistent 3D characters.But human voice actors still have the edge, said Mario Heras, dubbing director for video games in Mexico.AI cannot make dialogue "sound funny, broken, off -- or alive," he said.The human factor, he added, "protects us in this rebellion against the machines."

Multiplex chain Cinepolis bets on blockbusters to drive double-digit India revenue growth, executive says
Mexican theatre chain Cinepolis expects double-digit revenue growth in India this year as it opens more screens and bets on a major Hollywood and Bollywood lineup to bring in moviegoers. Western studios are counting on this summer to reverse a downtrend worsened by the 2023 Hollywood writers' strike, with blockbusters including "Jurassic World: Rebirth" and "F1" hitting theatres through September. "Hollywood has a very strong lineup, so (does) regional and Bollywood," said Cinepolis India Managing Director Devang Sampat, adding sharp marketing with malls and production houses could lift admissions, which are still 20% below pre-COVID levels. Theater chains face increasing competition from streaming apps, concerts and live sports. Still, Cinepolis, which operates 485 screen in India out of 6,800 globally, is looking to open 20-25 screens this year to drive revenue growth, Sampat said. As for longer-term expansion, the company is taking it "one year at a time," he added. Sampat did not disclose 2024 revenue or profit but said Cinepolis' annual revenue over the years, excluding the impact of the pandemic, had grown in the high single-digit to early-double-digit percentage range. According to industry data, Cinepolis reported a revenue of 13.46 billion rupees ($156.58 million) in the 2024 financial year, up 31% year-on-year, with net profit at 321 million rupees - its first annual profit in at least half a decade. Meanwhile, analysts expect revenue at PVR Inox, India's largest multiplex chain , to grow roughly 18% in the fiscal year that started on April 1, led by a strong movie lineup and plans to add 100-110 screens to its network of over 1,700. Indian multiplex revenues are expected to jump 20%-25%, fueled by big-budget movies such as "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning", Rajinikanth's "Coolie", and Rishab Shetty's "Kantara: Chapter 1," said Shobit Singhal, research analyst at Anand Rathi.

Saiyaara OTT release: Saiyaara, directed by Mohit Suri, is set to hit the screens on July 18. It has become the talk of the town because of its catchy songs and stylish trailer. The film also features fresh faces in the lead, which has helped it create a buzz among the younger audience. According to Rohit Jaiswal, a trade analyst, the film may premiere on Netflix after its run in theatres. 'Mohit Suri has a strong rapport with Netflix. So I feel that that will be the OTT platform of choice for Saiyaara. However, the final call will be made based on the prices quoted,' he told Indiatimes. Ek Villain Returns and Malang, Suri's previous two releases, premiered on Netflix after their run in theatres. Interestingly, Yash Raj Films is associated with Saiyaara. The banner's films premiere on Prime Video after their premiere in theatres. This, however, is unlikely to be the case here as YRF is only a distributor and not the production banner. Saiyaara cast and plot Saiyaara features Ahaan Panday in the lead. He is Chunky Panday's nephew and this marks his big screen debut. Panday is paired opposite Aneet Padda in the romantic drama. She rose to fame with the Prime Video original Big Girls Don't Cry. Saiyaara centres on Krish Kapoor, a fast-rising musician who struggles to come to terms with the harsh realities of the industry. His world is turned upside down when he meets Vaani, a talented songwriter and sparks fly instantly They soon fall in love and start a turbulent yet beautiful relationship. Saiyaara box office prediction day 1 Saiyaara is set to open to a strong response at the Indian box office. According to Rohit Jaiswal, it is likely to earn around Rs 24 crore at the box office on the first day. 'Saiyaara has created a buzz. Given the Rs 36 crore budget, it is a blockbuster in the making. The day 1 collection will be around Rs 24 crore,' he told Indiatimes. Going by this estimate, it will beat Dhadak (~8 crore) to record the highest opening for a debut hero. It will also outperform the likes of Metro In Dino (Rs 4 crore) and Maa (~ Rs 5 crore) with ease. Saiyaara, meanwhile, has worked its magic in pre-sales. According to Variety, it sold over 45,000 tickets across major theater chains in its first 24 hours of pre-sales. Saiyaara is set to hit the screens on July 18.
